ALGIERS, Algeria -- An Algerian football club has been banned from using its stadium pending investigations after one of its players was hit on the head and killed by an object thrown by fans.
- Call for sanctions after Ebosse death
On Tuesday, the Confederation of African Football backed measures taken by Algerian authorities to stop JS Kabylie from playing at November 1 Stadium in the city of Tizi Ouzou, where Cameroonian striker Albert Ebosse was fatally hit at a game on Saturday. CAF said it was only the first sanction and Kabylie faces more punishment.
CAF said the 24-year-old Ebosse suffered a head trauma and internal bleeding after being hit by a "sharp object." It appeared to be hurled by his team's supporters after a 2-1 loss.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter said it was "intolerable that a spectator caused the death of a player."
The federation said in an online statement: "The Algerian Ligue Professionnelle [LFP] and the disciplinary committee of the Algerian Football Federation [FAF] convened a meeting on Monday [Aug. 25, 2014] attended by officials of JS Kabylie, USM Alger and match officials who handled the league clash that led to the death of Cameroonian striker, Albert Ebosse.
"After deliberations, the disciplinary committee ruled on the first of a series of measures against JS Kabylie, in its capacity as hosts of the match held on Saturday [Aug. 23, 2014) at the 1 November 1954 Stadium in Tizi Ouzou.
"The committee decided that the club will play their championship games outside the Tizi Ouzou province whilst the 1 November 1954 Stadium remains closed until the outcome of investigations."
