Jovetic pleased to make an impact

Man of the match Stevan Jovetic was delighted to score a brace as Manchester City claimed a 3-1 victory over Liverpool.

The 24-year-old striker netted in each half as City moved up to third in the Premier League table with maximum points from their opening two matches.

Jovetic handed the home side the lead five minutes before the break when he collected the ball from an under-pressure David Silva in the goalmouth and made no mistake, firing the ball into the back of the net from close range.

The Montenegro striker struck his and City's second 10 minutes after the break as he powered home from just outside the six-yard box after collecting Samir Nasri's cross to make it 2-0.

Martin Skrtel collided with Edin Dzeko with just over 20 minutes left. The Bosnia international replaced by Sergio Aguero, who scored his team's third goal after just 23 seconds on the pitch.

Liverpool pulled one back in the final 10 minutes as Pablo Zabaleta got the last touch on the ball following a Rickie Lambert header, denying the former Southampton striker his first goal for last season's runners-up.

After the Reds pushed champions City to the end in last season's title race, the win was especially sweet for Jovetic.

He told told Sky Sports 1: "Liverpool is one of the teams (aiming to) win the Premier League and we knew that and I think today we played very well and at the end we won and it was an important victory for us."

Teammate Nasri reiterated the importance of the three points against one of the Premier League big guns.

He said: "I think every game that we play at home against a team from the big four is (worth) six points and you have to make a statement in those kind of games and this is only going to have three other big games like that at home and away at Arsenal."

Jovetic admitted he was pleased to put last season's troubles behind him and is only looking forward at the Etihad Stadium.

He added: "There are so many beautiful moments now -- after so many problems last year -- but I don't want to think about that as it's the past, but I just want to enjoy with this team with these players and to win as many titles as we can.

"It's difficult (to remain in the starting XI) I know that, but my job is just to go out onto the pitch and do my best. And then he (manager Manuel Pellegrini) decides."
