United waiting on Chris Smalling injury

Chris Smalling has become the eighth man on Manchester United's lengthy injury list after he limped off in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Sunderland.

United are currently waiting to see how long Smalling, 24, will spend on the sidelines after sustaining the groin problem.

New signings Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera are also injured, along with Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Jonny Evans, Jesse Lingard and Anderson.

"Of course, we have a lot of injuries right now," United manager Louis van Gaal told a news conference. "We had seven and now Smalling is already injured again so it is eight.

"You need all of your players. It is a groin injury, but we will have to wait and see how long. It is too early at the moment."

Smalling's departure meant United's three centre-backs for the second half included substitute Michael Keane, who was making his Premier League debut, and Tyler Blackett, who was playing in the English top flight for only the second time.

However, new signing Marcos Rojo -- who completed his 16 million-pound move from Sporting Lisbon last week -- should soon receive his work permit, either in time to face MK Dons in Tuesday's Capital One Cup second-round tie or before they take on Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.
