Honved offer Puskas' shirt to Del Piero

Juventus and Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero has been offered the No. 10 of Hungarian club Honved worn by Ferenc Puskas.

Del Piero, 39, is a free agent after his contract Australian A-League side Sydney FC expired and could be interested moving to the Hungarians, who are currently coached by Italian Pietro Vierchowod and signed ex-Lazio and Inter striker Tommaso Rocchi this week.

"It's true, for the last 15-20 days we have been talking to Stefano, who is Alessandro's brother and agent," Honved director of sport Fabio Cordella told GianlucaDiMarzio.com. "Our club is not economically up to the standard of these names, but the technical sponsor immediately accepted our idea and is ready to give us a big hand.

"We'll see what happens. It would be wonderful to bring him to Budapest. Until an hour ago everyone thought it was a made-up story. Instead we really are trying for Del Piero.

"The Hungarian population deserves him, because real football has been missing here for a few years.

"The State is helping, as there are at least seven or eight new stadiums and soon we'll start building our own too."

If the deal goes ahead then Honved would give Del Piero the No. 10 jersey worn by the legendary Puskas.

"That shirt was retired many years ago, but President [George] Hemingway would gladly bring it back for Del Piero and the Puskas family would also be honoured," he added. "We are trying for more Italians too. There is an interest for [Parma defender] Fabiano Santacroce and I am on my way to Italy for other situations."
