Shakhtar stadium hit by explosions

The stadium of Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, the Donbass Arena, has been hit by two explosions, although no casualties have been reported.

The stadium, a venue for the Euro 2012 championships, came close to being shelled two days ago when one man was slightly injured by mortar blasts that landed just 500 metres away and caused heavy damage to the surrounding area.

Early on Saturday morning, however, the Donbass Arena was hit as fighting continues in Ukraine between troops and Russian separatists.

A statement on the Shakhtar website read: On 23 August, at 6:00, two powerful explosions occurred at Donbass Arena. As a result of shelling, there are numerous damages of the northwestern facade of the stadium, communications, equipment and detached building of the energy centre, which is located in the northern part of the Donbass Arena park.

"There are no casualties among the stadium staff."
