Mathieu Valbuena's number retired

Marseille have confirmed that they will retire the No. 28 jersey in honour of departing France international Mathieu Valbuena.

Valbuena is joining Dynamo Moscow after eight seasons with Marseille, and bade farewell at a tearful news conference on Tuesday.

President Vincent Labrune told the club's official website that the 29-year-old's number would not be worn at the club again as he paid tribute to an "emblematic" player who had "marked the history of the club."

Valbuena said Dynamo Moscow boss Stanislav Cherchesov had first shown an interest in him when in charge of Spartak Moscow.

Having tracked his progress since Spartak and Marseille met in the 2008 UEFA Cup, Cherchesov got his man this summer for 10 million euros this summer.

"It was time to move on to something else," L'Equipe reported Valbuena as saying. "It was a carefully thought out decision."

He added that he hoped he would be allowed to say goodbye to the Marseille supporters before his old club take on Montpellier on Aug. 17.
