Wolfsburg join race for Romelu Lukaku

Wolfsburg are keen to sign Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, with Everton and Monaco also pursuing the Belgium striker.

Lukaku, 21, is expected to join compatriots Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard at the Blues' preseason training camp on Wednesday; the trio were given extra time off after Belgium reached the World Cup quarterfinals in Brazil.

Chelsea face Vitesse Arnhem in a friendly in the Netherlands this week and while Lukaku could play a role in that game, his long-term future at Stamford Bridge appears far from certain.

Having impressed on loan at Everton last season, the young striker is wanted by the Toffees again for the coming campaign, though Wolfsburg's sporting director Klaus Allofs hinted the Bundesliga outfit are also interested.

Bild have reported that Wolfsburg bid 28 million euros for the player, a sum that Allofs suggested was too large. He was, however, quoted in the Suddeutsche Zeitung as saying: "We all know he's a good player."

In France, meanwhile, football365.fr claimed Monaco have held talks regarding Lukaku, whom they could pair with Radamel Falcao up front after allowing Emmanuel Riviere to join Newcastle.

Lukaku, whose contract at Chelsea expires in 2016, has previously claimed he would favour a return to Everton, though the lure of Champions League football with Monaco could appeal.
