Adebayor, 30, reported feeling unwell to Tottenham medical staff but is now recovering in hospital and responding to treatment following a swift diagnosis.

The Togo international is expected to be released from hospital on Tuesday but will require seven days' rest before returning to training.

Tottenham begin a preseason tour of North America with a match against Seattle Sounders on July 19, but Adebayor has been advised not to travel on medical grounds.

Liverpool defender Kolo Toure fell ill with the disease in 2008 and again in 2014 prior to the World Cup, while Didier Drogba suffered with malaria as a Chelsea player in 2010.
