Freddy Adu fails to secure AZ contract

AZ Alkmaar have announced that Freddy Adu will not be offered a contract following a trial at the club.

Adu, 25, has been searching for a new club since being released by Brazilian club Bahia in November 2013.

He had a trial at English Championship side Blackpool earlier this year and former U.S. boss Bob Bradley invited him to spend two weeks with Norwegian club Stabaek, but neither offered him a contract.

He then began a spell with AZ last week, but the Eredivisie club announced on their official website that Adu had failed to secure a contract.

The statement added: "We wish Freddy success in his quest for a new employer."

Adu, who has appeared 17 times for United States, has played for clubs including Benfica and Monaco but has struggled to live up to expectations after being tipped to become a major star during his early years.

Adu had told Dutch broadcaster NOS during the trial: "I still believe I can make it as a footballer. I'm only 25 years old. If this adventure doesn't work out, well, there's always something else."
