Buttner has moved for an initial 5.5 million euros -- a fee that could rise by 1.5 million euros -- after becoming surplus to requirements following the arrival of Luke Shaw from Southampton for 27 million pounds on Friday.

A statement on United's official website read: "Everybody at Old Trafford would like to thank Alex for his service and wish him well for his new career in Russia."

The Dutchman had been Patrice Evra's deputy for the last two seasons. He started nine league games and made a total of 28 appearances after arriving from Vitesse Arnhem.

Buttner said on Wednesday that he had agreed to join Dinamo, adding that a desire to play Champions League football and win trophies were the motivations for the move.

The 25-year-old becomes the first player United have sold in Louis Van Gaal's reign and paved the way for his departure by criticising the 62-year-old for not selecting him for Netherlands.

United have had a busy week in the transfer market, having also signed midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao for 28.8 million pounds.
