Hertha Berlin have signed defender John Heitinga on a two-year contract.

The Bundesliga club announced on Monday that they had secured the 30-year-old, who played for Fulham last season, on a free transfer.

Heitinga, who has also previously played for Ajax, Atletico Madrid and Everton, told Hertha's official website that he is thrilled to have made the move.

"I really wanted to play in the Bundesliga, so I'm looking forward to being at Hertha BSC," Heitinga said.

"I am very excited about the team and their great fans. After Amsterdam, Madrid and London, Berlin will now be the next world city in which I continue my career."

Hertha general manager Michael Preetz added: "John Heitinga is an internationally experienced defender from whom our young players in particular will benefit greatly."

Heitinga has played 87 times for Netherlands but was left out of Louis van Gaal's World Cup squad.
