'Colombian football owes Pekerman'

Colombian football has regained its identity thanks to national team coach Jose Pekerman, according to former captain Carlos Valderrama.

Los Cafeteros have only previously ever made it past the group stage at a World Cup once in 1990, when Valderrama helped the side to the round of 16 in Italy.

However, they have repeated that feat this year with Pekerman's men having secured a place in the knockout stages of the competition after just two games.

Colombia have been praised for their attractive football in the wins against Greece and Ivory Coast, and Valderrama believes Pekerman deserves the credit for the side's resurgence.

"We're happy because we had never won two straight games in the World Cup, and we've got these guys and they are making history," Valderrama said.

"I feel admiration for the teacher [Pekerman], with everything he's done.

"He has regained the identity of Colombian football."

Colombia can guarantee top spot in Group C by claiming a point against Japan on Tuesday.
