Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos can win the 2014 Ballon d'Or if he and Spain do well at the World Cup, according to Fabio Cannavaro -- a man who has won both trophies.

In 2006, former Italy captain Cannavaro was the last defender to win the Ballon after producing a string of superb performances as the Azzurri won that year's World Cup in Germany.

Ramos is seen by many as an early front-runner for the 2014 prize after his goals in the Champions League semifinals and final were key to Real winning their 10th European Cup.

And Cannavro, an ex-Madrid teammate, told Marca: "Of course [Ramos] will have a chance to win the Ballon d'Or if he has a good World Cup.

"I believe what happens in Brazil will be important, even with the great end of the season Sergio had. If Spain has a good competition, I am convinced he will be among the candidates to win the prize."

He said Ramos would always be remembered for his contribution to Real's Decima Champions League triumph.

"Sergio changed the final for Real Madrid," he explained. "His is the face of la Decima. His 'golazo' was worth a final. It is the Champions League of Sergio Ramos."
