Rooney baffled by Scholes criticism

Wayne Rooney has responded once again in his ongoing feud with former Manchester United teammate Paul Scholes, in comments that suggest the pair were never close friends during their time together at Old Trafford.

Scholes suggested in a recent interview that Rooney's better days may not be ahead of him, yet the Manchester United striker suggested the Old Trafford club's decision to hand him a new five-year contract in February confirmed he had the full backing of his employers to succeed well beyond his 30th birthday.

"I'm sure he's upset a lot of people at Man United because they see me as worthy of signing a new deal at the club, so they obviously have got a different opinion to what Paul has," Rooney said.

"It was a big strange, I'll be honest, but he has his opinions and he's entitled to them," Rooney added. "I don't agree with it, but he's probably the best player I've ever played with, so I'm not going to knock him as a player, but I don't agree with his point. I'm sure he has his reasons for it."

Rooney then offered an insight into the kind of working relationship he enjoyed with Scholes during their nine years together as United teammates.

"He's been a great player at Man United, but I've never had his phone number and he's never had mine," Rooney said.
