Marco Reus has been ruled out for three months after injuring his ankle during Germany's final World Cup warmup game against Armenia on Friday, Borussia Dortmund have confirmed.

- Dortmund: No Barcelona deal for Reus

Reus, 25, was tipped to be one of the stars of the tournament in Brazil, but his hopes were dashed when he twisted his ankle only seconds from the half-time whistle in Die Nationalmannschaft's 6-1 victory.

It had initially been expected that the Dortmund midfielder would return to action in six weeks, allowing him to be back on the pitch in time for the new Bundesliga season, which gets underway in late August.

However, further tests on his injured ankle on Tuesday revealed the extent of the injury -- Reus not only suffered a partial ligament tear, but also damaged his heel bone.

According to Dortmund's club doctor Markus Braun, the expected recovery time is three months. This means that the Germany international will not only miss preseason, but also the first few Bundesliga games.

Reus should, though, be fit to return to action by the time the first Champions League group games get underway in mid-September.
