Porto midfielder Fernando hopes to complete his transfer to Manchester City this week, according to his agent.

The 26-year-old is waiting to get Porto's agreement to travel to Manchester and undergo a medical.

He is expected to cost City around 16 million pounds and will become their first summer signing.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini initially tried to sign the central midfielder in January.

"Fernando is in Porto and he's waiting for FC Porto to give him a decision on the documents they have received for him to be able to travel immediately," Fernando's agent Antonio Araujo told Maisfutebol, adding that everything was in the hands of the Portuguese club and he hoped to finalise a transfer by the weekend.

Fernando will not require a work permit as he has Portuguese citizenship and his arrival could lead to Jack Rodwell moving on.

City are also trying to finalise a move for Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna, who is available on a free transfer.
