Fred strikes for Brazil, Germany cruise

Striker Fred scored early in the second half to help Brazil defeat Serbia 1-0 in their final warm-up before the World Cup on Friday.

Brazil were struggling and fans were jeering the squad when Fred found the net from inside the area in the 58th minute at a nearly packed Morumbi Stadium. He chested down a cross by Thiago Silva and hit a right footed shot as he fell in between two Serbian defenders.

Bruno Alves headed a classy late winner as Portugal beat Mexico 1-0.

In the third minute of second-half stoppage time, the defender darted into space to meet a free-kick delivered from a deep position on the right by Joao Moutinho and directed the ball inches inside the right post.

It was Mexico's second straight 1-0 defeat to World Cup competition, after falling to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday.

Germany cruised to a 6-1 win over Armenia in their final World Cup warm-up, although the game was overshadowed by an injury to Marco Reus which looks likely to prevent the Borussia Dortmund midfielder from boarding a plane to Brazil on Saturday.

The 25-year-old was carried off the field with tears in his eyes just before half-time and he was immediately taken to hospital for a scan on what appeared to be a serious ankle injury.

That set a sombre mood for the second half, although Andre Schurrle put Germany in front early on with further goals from Lukas Podolski, Benedikt Howedes and a record-breaking Miroslav Klose effort cancelling out Henrikh Mkhitaryan's equaliser from the penalty spot.

Mario Gotze added two more for Joachim Loew's men, although Reus' injury rendered the result secondary with Germany set to lose a key player 10 days prior to their opening group fixture against Portugal.

Costa Rica's Giancarlo Gonzalez could face discipline after he was sent off after an ugly altercation with Ireland striker Kevin Doyle in a 1-1 draw.

Doyle, who was left with blood pouring down his face, four minutes before the break, handed Ireland an early lead with his 13th international goal before Gonzalez lost his head, only for Celso Borges to level from the penalty spot after the break.

Ireland captain Robbie Keane could have restored his side's lead almost immediately, but saw his spot-kick saved by substitute goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton.

Yuri Zhirkov scored a spectacular volley as Russia finished their pre-World Cup friendlies with a 2-0 win over Morocco on Friday.

Zhirkov made sure of the win with his first international goal in the 58th minute after center back Vasily Berezutsky put Russia in front in the 29th from a corner.

Zambia gave Japan a fright in Tampa before sliding to a 4-3 defeat.

Japan fell 2-0 behind during the first half, conceding a close-range header from Christopher Katongo and a sweetly-struck 20-yard strike from Nathan Sinkala.

Keisuke Honda's penalty cut the deficit and Shinji Kagawa had a stroke of luck for an equaliser when his apparent cross bypassed everyone on its way into the net.

Honda prodded Japan in front, only for Zambia's Lubambo Musanda to strike a 25-yard effort that deflected over Shusaku Nishikawa to haul Zambia back to 3-3. Yoshito Okubo pinched a last-gasp winner, showing sharp control to bring down a long pass and composing himself before producing a powerful left-footed finish.

Croatia and Australia are both heading to the finals, and it took a Nikica Jelavic strike to separate them in Salvador. Croatia's 1-0 victory came courtesy of Jelavic's strike off the underside of the crossbar in the 58th minute.

Greece beat non-qualifiers Bolivia 2-1 in New Jersey with goals from Panagiotis Kone and Kostas Katsouranis. Rudy Cardozo replied from long range for Bolivia.

Fredy Guarin's late 30-yard strike capped a 3-0 win for Colombia over Jordan in Buenos Aires.

Colombia had led through a pair of penalties, converted by James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado.
