Leonardo Bonucci back in Italy training following debilitating virus - report

Leonardo Bonucci has returned to training for Italy after losing almost two kilogrammes due to a bout of gastric flu, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Bonucci, 29, was absent from training earlier this week due to a virus which reportedly saw him lose a significant amount of weight and led him to be placed in quarantine to prevent it from spreading.

However, the Juventus defender was back on the training field on Wednesday and is expected to board the flight with the rest of the Italy squad destined for Palermo on Thursday.

Italy face Albania in Sicily in their next World Cup qualifying fixture on Friday before hosting Liechtenstein in June. They then travel to Spain in September for what could be a decisive fixture in Group G, with both sides currently level on points at the top of the standings after a 1-1 draw in Turin in October.

Should Bonucci not be deemed fit enough to face Albania, AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli is the first alternative to partner Andrea Barzagli in the centre of a four-man defence, with Davide Zappacosta and Mattia De Sciglio as full-backs.

Up front, Ciro Immobile and Andrea Belotti are due to lead the line with the Lazio forward believing that he and his Torino counterpart can fire the nation to a place in the World Cup in Russia next year.

"I and the 'Gallo' [Belotti] are doing well and the numbers are on our side and show that a partnership like ours can aim for a place at the World Cup," Immobile told a news conference. "We've scored a lot of goals, but without the help of our teammates, we would be doing much less."
