Riccardo Montolivo, Thiago Motta not risked for Italy friendly

Riccardo Montolivo and Thiago Motta will miss Italy's friendly against Scotland through injury but head coach Antonio Conte is confident about their prospects of being fit for Euro 2016.

Milan captain Montolivo and Paris St Germain midfielder Motta both sustained calf injuries and will sit out Sunday night's challenge match in Malta.

Daniele De Rossi will face the Scots but his Achilles injury is still causing some concern.

"Montolivo and Motta are okay, they are back training with us, but they won't play. We won't risk them," Conte said. "De Rossi still has a problem with his Achilles tendon but he will play and we will see how it goes.''

Conte still has 30 players in his squad and will have to shed seven of them next week.

And the future Chelsea manager vowed to make clinical decisions.

"I am very satisfied with the players in training,'' he said. "All are showing me that they want to go to the Euros. I have had time to train with the players, I can transmit my ideas and I feel it's going well.

"Some players are coming back from injuries, even if they are important players, they have to show they are fit.

"I have to make a selection. That is the worst thing for a coach, even if they are friends you have to leave some out. I will talk with the doctors and they will help me decide.''

Italy face Belgium, Republic of Ireland and Sweden in the European Championship and are not even favourites in the group stage given the Belgians' current ranking as world No. 2 behind Argentina.

But World Cup winner Gianluigi Buffon believes they will click in France, as they have done in many previous tournaments.

"This time Italy are not favourites but we will find the trigger to do something that will surprise everyone,'' he said.
