Serie A reserve team proposal backed by Juventus' Beppe Marotta

Juventus' general manager Beppe Marotta has hailed a decision which could pave the way to Serie A clubs entering their reserve teams into the Italian league system.

A Lega Serie A meeting on Thursday discussed proposals to adopt a similar system to the ones in force both in Spain and Germany where clubs' reserve teams compete in the lower leagues, rather than in a specific reserve division.

"If it happens, it will be in everybody's best interests," Marotta said after the consultation in Milan to Sportitalia.

"It's emerged that the [Lega's] technical committee have highlighted and indicated how eventually inserting reserve teams into lower leagues would be an important instrument for the growth and formation of young players who belong to an individual club.

"What has come out of this meeting is important and it should be received well by the clubs, their presidents and football's governing body."

Currently, it is common for Italy's top-flight clubs to have numerous young players on their books who are sent out to lower-league teams on loan to allow them to gain experience and develop, rather than remaining in their own club's youth system.

Under the new proposals, clubs would be more likely to keep these players within their own club, still offering them the opportunity to play regularly at a lower level, but also leaving the door open for them also to make first-team appearances.

It could also enable players recovering from injuries the opportunity to regain fitness in competitive matches at a lower level before making their first-team returns, as is often the case both in Spain and Germany.
