Referee, 17, attacked in Italian amateur league game

An amateur match in Italy between Atletico Cavallino and Cutrofiano had to be abandoned after a 17-year-old referee was assaulted by staff and supporters from one club.

Atletico Cavallino -- a club from the Apulian city of Lecce -- were leading 2-1 before a penalty was awarded to the opposition by official Luigi Rosato. Fans and club staff invaded the field and attacked the referee, continuing their assault even when the official managed to reach the dressing rooms.

He was taken to Lecce hospital where he was treated for numerous cuts and bruises, but, incredibly, Atletico Cavallino president Rosario Fina said he was lucky to escape with only a few bumps and bruises.

"He got one or two little slaps, that's not much," Fina said to sololecce.it. "It could have been worse. If I'd got my hands on him, I would have killed him. The referee made a mistake and he deserved to be punished."
