Granada to terminate Jose Angulo contract due to failed drugs test

Granada are in the process of terminating the contract of summer signing Jose Angulo because of a failed drugs test.

The player had been suspended since Aug. 25, when Granada learned from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) that the Ecuador international striker had tested positive for a banned substance during the Copa Libertadores.

The Spanish club have announced that the player's B sample was also positive.

A statement read: "The CONMEBOL notified to Granada CF that the result of Jose 'Tin' Angulo's counter analysis in the tests done on July 20, 2016 during the Copa Libertadores has come back positive for a banned substance."

Angulo scored six goals for Independiente as they finished runners-up to Atletico Nacional in the tournament.

Hours before the B test was revealed to be positive, Granada sporting director Javier Torralbo told Cadena Ser he had been informed by Independiente del Valle that the 21-year-old had tested positive for cocaine.

"I got a call from the Independiente del Valle president [Franklin Alberto Tello] and he told us that the player had tested positive for cocaine," Torralbo said.

Angulo signed a five-year contract with the Spanish club after joining from Independiente del Valle last month.

He was one of 18 signings made by Granada this summer, and Torralbo said news of the failed drugs test was "a hard blow."

"My world collapsed because, after completing such a difficult signing, he was going to be a very important player for Granada and for that to happen was very tough," he added.

"We are not responsible for acts committed by third parties and the issue is now with our legal team.

"But you learn from this and we have worked towards resolving the issue."

Angulo did not feature in Granada's Liga opener at home to Villarreal and had yet to make his debut.

Granada moved to sign Ukrainian striker Artem Kravets on a season-long loan from Dinamo Kiev two days before the end of the transfer window.
