Timo Horn: Germany targeting Olympic Games medal in Rio de Janeiro

Germany have set their sights on winning a medal at the Olympic Games next month, according to goalkeeper Timo Horn.

Horn, 23, was included in a strong Olympic squad that includes Sven and Lars Bender and Matthias Ginter, and the Cologne keeper says coach Horst Hrubesch is determined to enjoy a successful tournament.

"Anybody who knows Horst Hrubesch knows that he is only happy with the best," Horn told reporters in Cologne ahead of the national team's departure for Brazil.

"Of course our aim is to win a medal. I'm really looking forward to the Olympics. A lot has been said about the importance of the tournament, but I think it's a unique experience for a footballer to be able to be involved.

"If you asked me as a kid then I would have said winning the Champions League or winning the World Cup is what I would like the most, but to be able to experience the Olympics and have an Olympic medal in the cabinet is unique, no matter what sport you play.

"We've got a really good team with exclusively Bundesliga players involved. I think we've got a very good chance of at least reaching the semifinals."

That would allow Horn and his teammates the opportunity to truly taste the Olympic atmosphere since it would be only at that stage that they would take up residence in the Olympic village in Rio de Janeiro.

"We're a bit outside of everything with our first game in San Salvador and then we go to Belo Horizonte," he said. "That's why we're not really in touch with things to start with. Our aim is to move into the Olympic village and then play in the Maracana. We want to experience this flair of the Olympic village."

Germany face Mexico in their opening Group C fixture on Aug. 4 before facing South Korea three days later. They wrap up the group stage against Fiji on Aug. 10.
