DFB Pokal follows FA Cup in trialling fourth substitute in extra-time

Clubs in Germany's DFB Pokal will be able to make a fourth substitution in extra-time as part of an ongoing pilot of a proposed change to the laws of the game.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) in March approved an additional sub in matches played at last summer's Rio Olympics and at the Club World Cup and it has welcomed trials across several competitions.

The FA Cup in England will allow a fourth change during extra time from the quarterfinals onwards, and now the German FA have followed suit with immediate effect -- beginning with the round of 16 in the women's competition this weekend.

All clubs still involved in the men's and women's competition previously agreed to support the project.

"We are delighted that all clubs see the sporting use of this rule and have agreed to this change during the running competition," DFB vice president Peter Frymuth said. "We have the players' workload in mind, and the coaches now have one more option to control it.

"Taking part in the pilot project enables us to have a practical assessment of a fourth substitution in extra-time with regards to its advantages. We can also spot possible negative effects on the competition."

The pilot project will end after next season, the DFB added.
