San Siro, Italy
And that's the final whistle - a brilliant performance from Milan, particularly after the break, has stifled Barcelona and earned the Italians a potentially pivotal 2-0 first-leg lead.
Pique finds Alves, who crosses. Abbiati takes the ball comfortably, and that is almost that.
Boateng gets it to Niang on the right. He takes on Alba, who almost casually gets the better of him.
Again, though, they're forced back. Messi loses possession and Traore picks up possession. He can't make the most of the space, but Milan - crucially - do manage to keep the ball.
Mexes produces a splendid defensive header as Barcelona swing a hopeful ball into the box. But Barcelona come forward once more...
And a booking for the Milan substitute.
Traore brings down Busquets as he tries to get the ball inside the Barcelona half. Free-kick...
In comes a Barcelona cross, and another header away follows.
Five minutes of stoppage time - perhaps not surprising after that collision of heads involving Puyol earlier in the half.
Barca have a throw deep inside their own half, and we are inside the final minute of normal time. Just waiting to see what the fourth official says will be added.
Muntari does well, cutting off Barcelona at source as they try to make room down the left in their own half. The hosts are back on the ball with the seconds ticking away.
Puyol comes off and Mascherano is on as Barcelona make a late change.
Two minutes, plus stoppages, stand between Miolan and a two-goal cushion to take to the San Siro.
El Shaarawy, who has had an excellent night, comes off, and Bakaye Traore comes on.
Xavi will whip this in. He finds Puyol, who gets a powerful header - and can only steer it wide of the target.
Pedro scampers down the left for Barcelona. They have a corner...
And the response from the stands is superb - huge cheers, huge noise. These Milan fans have a great deal to be proud of tonight.
Another great challenge from Milan in midfield. There must have been millions of those by now.
Xavi goes into the area and falls under a challenge. Nothing doing, says referee Thomson.
And for the umpteenth time, Milan get a challenge in. They have provided a lesson in how to defend against Barcelona.
The visitors come forward, looking for an away goal that is now much more needed than it was a couple of minutes ago.
Who would have thought it? Milan have doubled their money and, if they can take a 2-0 lead to the Camp Nou, who knows?
GOAL: The ball is played into the area, and El Shaarawy flicks it beautifully into the path of the lurking Muntari, who is all on his own and finishes superbly from about ten yards out.
More good pressing by Boateng as Barcelona look to play it forward. He gets a touch on the ball, and Milan can come forward...
He bends it over the wall and over the bar, and it just brushes the top of the net as it goes.
Actually, it's a bit more left than central. Xavi is having a long look...
Pique and Puyol inside their own half, going sideways. Forward it goes to Sanchez, who is brought down about 30 yards out and central. Can Barcelona make anything of this?
...the ball is cleared, and then an offside flag is up as soon as it is played back in.
Muntari finds El Shaarawy down the left for Milan. He does well and wins his side a corner...
Inietsa now - a little one-two on the edge of the area. He smacks a shot - it's hit well, but it's hit wide.
Fifteen minutes remaining in Milan, and still the hosts have their narrow advantage.
Pazzini is coming off and M'Baye Niang is on in hi place. His first action is to cross, and Pique clears.
Sanchez wins an attacking throw for Barcelona. Again, Milan stand firm. They have defended absolutely superbly tonight - a brilliant effort so far.
Messi plays in Xabi on the edge of the area. He has the space to shoot, but declines to do so and his attempted pass goes awry.
But here come Barcelona again: the bandaged Puyol plays the ball square on halfway.
Another fine midfield challenge stops Barcelona from getting going. When they win it back, Sanchez - anonymous since coming on - concedes that possession with a sloppy pass.
The patched-up Puyol is now back into the action as well. Barcelona have 20 minutes in which to find a goal and avoid going into the second leg with a deficit.
...from it, they get a shot in, but it's comfortable for Valdes.
In the meantime, it's a corner for Milan...
Play restarts, and Barcelona have the ball. They lose it, and Abate comes down the right...
And there's warm applause from the stands as he does just that.
The Milan man looks a little on the dazed side, but he is groggily getting back to his feet now.
Substitute Sanchez gives the ball away, and Puyol clashes with Pazzini, who is down after that mid-air collision.
Milan win the ball in midfield, but the pass forward is rather aimless and Messi has possession.
More Barcelona possession. More Milan stubbornness. It's working for them so far.
Meanwhile, Messi takes the free-kick and sends it sailing high into the stands.
Change for Barcelona - Fabregas off, Alexis Sanchez on.
Messi is dispossessed as he tries to weave a way through midfield. Barca keep it, and win a free-kick. They haven't really tested Abbiati properly so far.
Boateng crosses and Barcelona scramble it away. The visitors may be readying themselves for a substitution soon.
Another good clearance by Milan - Abate this time - and they, and their fans, have been energised.
Pique was booked for his protests in the aftermath of the Milan goal.
The visitors are stung, and Xabi plays it forward. Milan race into the challenge.
Barcelona aren't happy - they think there may have been a handball that led to the ball falling to Boateng.
GOAL: And Milan score from it - there's a scramble, the ball falls to Boateng on the edge of the area, and he steers it low past Valdes and into the corner. Milan have the breakthrough!
El Shaarawy gets the ball, and gets fouled. Free-kick to Milan, on the left, and they can cross this one in...
Abate makes a good run down the right, but his cross is a disappointing one.
And a yellow card for Busquets, too.
They have to defend here, though, as Iniesta is felled. But then Busquets and Pazzini clash. Free-kick Milan.
You feel a Milan goal may be the thing that's needed to get this game going.
Boateng tries to get a foot in in midfield, but he can't. When Milan eventually do break the rhythm of Barca's play, they do so illegally and give away a free-kick.
The possession pattern is already much the same as the first half - all Barcelona, but they're not really going anywhere in the face of Milan's durable, breakaway tactics.
Alves races onto a backheel just inside the area, and Milan shut the door again.
Barcelona work it to the edge of the box, then back into midfield. Busquets and Iniesta combine, but the visitors are having to go backwards in an attempt to come forwards.
Boateng harries Iniesta - illegally, says the referee. Free-kick to Barcelona, halfway inside the Milan half.
Now it's the hosts' turn to indulge in a little Barca-esque keep-ball. Busquets puts a stop to that, though, with a good challenge.
Here's Fabregas in midfield as Barcelona try to get something going. But the Milan pressing is superb again and Boateng picks up possession.
Here comes Puyol - but Milan step in and Boateng is away down the right. He crosses, but that also comes to nought.
Milan will get proceedings restarted. They play it long, but to no avail - that's straight through to Valdes.
The second half is coming our way very shortly - the players are back out.
And that's half-time - not a classic half. Milan have contained Barcelona superbly, but they will be desperate to score a goal of their own to take into the second leg at the Camp Nou.
Downfield from Valdes, and thumped straight back upfield by Mexes. Abate comes forward and crosses - straight to the Barca 'keeper.
Last couple of minutes of the half, and Barcelona are on the ball again. Alves crosses, and yet again Milan stand firm.
Fabregas tumbles on the edge of the Milan box after an Iniesta pass. No free-kick, says referee Thomson.
Xavi on the ball now: again, Milan are back in numbers, denying Barcelona space. Alba tries to get in on the left of the area, and Milan hammer that one away.
Then Messi fouls Mexes. He doesn't like that decision. Meanwhile, Montolivo is down after a collision with Alba, but not for long.
El Shaarawy runs at the Barca defence in an effort to change all that, but doesn't have enough support and is eventually crowded out.
Heading towards the final five minutes of the first half, and no breakthrough in Milan so far.
Muntari makes an overhead clearance, and is a bit winded by the fall from that one. He's back on his feet quickly, though.
As it comes in, there is penalty area jostling and Puyol is penalised for a foul.
Pedro saunters infield for Barcelona and links with Xavi. As Barca pass in midfield, Milan funnel back and have a wall of players between the visitors and the goal. That defence does its job again - but this time at the expense of a corner...
Muntari, though, wins it back and when Boateng fizzes a ball into the area, El Shaarawy can't quite get a touch on it. A dangerous moment from Milan.
Montolivo presides, and Barcelona clear.
Milan can't get the ball off them - but now they do an El Shaarawy breaks. Busquets is then adjudged to have fouled Muntari - free-kick to Milan inside Barcelona's half.
Intricacy from Barcelona down the left, and again obstinacy from Milan in response. But it's back with the visitors. Pass, pass, pass.
Busquets starts a move that looks dangerous when the ball reaches Alves. But the flag is up, and that's that.
Messi is wandering out to the right more and more. He plays it infield again, and this time Montolivo is the Milan man who has anticipated what's going on and clears.
Alves reads Milan's plan well, cutting out a ball to the left and El Shaarawy.
Lovely footwork by Messi on the right. He plays the ball in midfield, but the hosts slam the door shut again.
There's no doubt that - as you would expect - the majority of the possession is with Barcelona. But there haven't been many chances so far, and the best of those has fallen to Milan's El Shaarawy.
Messi embarks on one of his twinkle-toed runs, but Constant deals with it really well, standing his ground and then getting a good challenge in.

He is dispossessed and forward comes Messi. He's tripped inside the Milan half by Mexes.
Milan will be pretty pleased with the way they have played so far, and they find El Shaarawy on the left...

Puyol produces some cool defending under pressure after a good ball down the left, and the visitors will bring it away.
El Shaarawy scurries after another ball forward, but his scurrying is cut short by a linesman's flag.
Then Fabregas gives it away, a wayward attempt to head it on in midfield easily intercepted.
Zapata gives the ball away to Xavi... who then gives it away himself.
He rolls the ball to Xavi, who belts one from long range - but Abbiati is right behind it.
In comes a cross - Valdes catches and away comes Messi.
Again, great purpose from Milan. They win it back, and are not giving Barca any time to settle into a midfield rhythm.
But they're back again. Iniesta wins them a throw just inside Milan territory and down the left.
The best opening of the game so far, then, has fallen to the hosts. Barcelona are back on the ball after that scare, moving through midfield until an attempted pass is cut out.
...Boateng flicks the ball on, and it's only narrowly past the far post. But El Shaarawy had a wonderful chance there - will Milan get too many better ones?
El Shaarawy races through into the Barcelona area on the left, but his touch is heavy and the ball is ushered behind by Barcelona. Corner...
Muntari produces an extraordinary slice in midfield, sending the ball sailing high towards his own goal. Abbiati is there to catch and then Milan come forward...
El Shaarawy hassles well in midfield, and now it's Barcelona's turn to be forced back.
From it, good Barcelona pressing forces the hosts to go all the way back to goalkeeper Abbiati.
Montolivo is brought down in midfield. It seems Milan have an advantage, but it's not played and they have to settle for a free-kick instead.
Plenty of action already. Alves crosses from the right, but the flag is up as a defensive header drifts narrowly wide of the Milan goal.
Pique gets there, but the ball is blocked again and then scrambled away - anywhere will do. Milan try to break, but it comes to nothing.
Corner to Barcelona, which is cleared for another one.
Lovely movement, but the cross is blocked. Messi than has a shot from the edge of the area, but it's blocked.
Space for Alba on the left again, and he works it back to midfield before it goes back to him...
Moments later, Fabregas is felled in midfield and Barca embark on another spell of keep-ball.
Jordi Alba plays the ball forward down the left for Barcelona, and again Milan snap into the challenges and get it away.
They lose the ball, however, and Zapata passes it back to Abbiati, who clears downfield.
Boateng clips Messi inside the Milan half - free-kick to Barcelona.
A decent effort, that one, and it was well-received by the Milan fans.
The ball drops to Muntari just outside the area, and he belts a half-volley over the top.
Back come Milan again, though, with Mexes playing the ball forward.
Lovely interchanges on the edge of the area by Barca - Iniesta attempts to cross, but that threat is snuffed out.
Already, there are signs that Milan will hassle and harry their opponents as much as possible, and they're getting plenty of encouragement from their fans.
But the hosts win it back, and full-back Abate gallops down the right. He and the hosts would like a corner. Goal-kick, says Mr Thomson.
Whistles from the home crowd as Barcelona keep possession, inside their own half.
The visitors get the game under way - here we go ...
A sea of flags in the stands. Pendants being exchanged in the centre circle. Barcelona are in their yellow and orange change kit.
And here they come - to a huge reception. Tonight's referee, incidentally, is Scotland's Craig Thomson.
Five minutes remaining until kick-off - there's noise, there's high expectation, and the players are in the tunnel ready to emerge onto the pitch.
There's almost exactly half an hour until kick-off: stay with ESPN FC for all the drama from the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
And now the visitors' XI: Valdes, Alves, Pique, Puyol, Alba, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Pedro, Messi.
Milan first: Abbiati, Abate, Mexes, Zapata, Constant, Ambrosini, Montolivo, Muntari, El Shaarawy, Pazzini, Boateng.
Here are the line-ups: one or two brilliant attackers on show...
Well, I think we can safely say this should be a good one. Two great teams, a great stadium, and a great occasion. If that doesn't bring on a 0-0 draw, who knows what will?
