Newcastle battled hard and were unlucky not to get an equaliser through Cisse, but ultimately Sunderland worked hard at the back and hit their opponents on the counter-attack to kill the game off.
And there goes the full-time whistle. A huge three points for Sunderland that could go a long way in securing their safety.
O'Shea concedes a corner. Marveaux picks out Yanga-Mbiwa with the set-piece but the defender heads it high and wide.
Sunderland win a free-kick just outside the area. They decide on taking it to the corner flag though, rather than looking for a fourth.

Sunderland come forward through Sessegnon who plays in N'Diaye. The midfielder shoots from a tight angle and brings out a clever save from Elliot.
Gutierrez decides to shoot from well outside the area but his effort takes a big deflection off Cisse and goes well wide of the target.
The answer is no, but they win another corner. That is even worse and Sunderland clear the danger.

Cisse picks up possession on the edge of the area and takes aim at goal. His shot takes a deflection and Ameobi tries to get on the end of it but Mignolet does well to get to the ball first.
A real penalty shout for Sunderland as Graham gets on the end of a corner and heads the ball against Yanga-Mbiwa's arm. Nothing given.

Newcastle really piling on the pressure and making Sunderland work hard at the back. The Black Cats are coping well though at the moment.

Ben Arfa makes an instant impact as he darts down the left before picking out Cisse in the box. The striker lays it off to Tiote but he scuffs his shot completely.

Sunderland break down the other end of the pitch through Sessegnon. He bursts into the box and takes a tumble as Gutierrez goes in for the challenge. Nothing given. The Sunderland man should really have taken the shot on there. A waste.
Replays show Cisse to be in an onside position. Harsh for Newcastle.

Newcastle have been getting plenty of crosses into the Sunderland box but they just need to be a little more accurate and start to make some of them count.
Marveaux sends it in but again Sunderland are able to clear. They counter up the other end and Debuchy makes a hash of his clearance, allowing Johnson in. The winger tries to chip Krul but he gets it wrong and the keeper is able to deal with it.

Bardsley is down injured and receiving treatment. Newcastle fans not too pleased with what they perceive as time wasting from the Sunderland player.

There goes the half-time whistle and what a first half it has been. Sunderland lead but Newcastle have had the chances to draw level. The game has been played at a manic pace and is everything you would expect from a derby. Let's hope for more of the same over the next 45 minutes.

Taylor gets booked for the foul on Mignolet.
Krul sends a long ball forward. Gutierrez wins the flick-on and Taylor tries to get on the end of it but Mignolet rushes off his line and the defender ends up catching the keeper.
The corner lands at the feet of Cisse but the striker can only hit it into a sea of bodies on the line and somehow Sunderland scramble it away.
Gutierrez cuts in from the left and curls a cross-cum-shot towards goal but Mignolet does well to tip it away for a corner.
Marveaux picks out Cisse with a fine ball in from the right but the striker somehow manages to miss the header.
Sessegnon has looked very dangerous out there today. Every time he has picked up the ball you feel as though something might happen.
Cisse goes into the book for a very late challenge on Bardsley. There have been a few of those today, and I am sure there will be a few more.

A superb response from Newcastle after conceding that goal. They are hungry for an equaliser and are continuing to pile on the pressure.
Sissoko picks out Cisse with great first-time ball from the right. The striker shoots on the turn but Mignolet is there once again to deny him with another top save as he gets down low to claim it.
This derby is really coming alive now. That goal has set things up nicely.

McClean does brilliantly to reclaim possession for Sunderland before finding Sessegnon. The forward turns Gutierrez before rifling a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Krul no chance. Great goal.

Johnson's free-kick is poor and he fails to even beat the first man. Newcastle get the ball clear and Marveaux looks to be in on goal but for the recovery of Rose who soon averts the dsnger. Great defending.

Taylor does appear to pull the shirt of Graham. The Sunderland man makes a meal of it but I have seen those given before. Taylor lucky again.
Sessegnon picks out the feet of Graham in the box. He tries to turn and shoot but goes to ground as he loses his balance. The striker claims he was clipped, but the referee says play on.
No real clear chances as of yet, but the opening 14 minutes have been anything but boring.
