Old Trafford, England
And that was that. A fitting end to the greatest managerial career ever.
Sir Alex already looking to the future and telling everybody to stand by their new manager. Also, pays tribute to Paul Scholes who retires today. Then talks about wishing Darren Fletcher a speedy recovery.
Sir Alex finally looking emotional as his achievements are announced. A wry smile as he picks up the mic. Congratulates the fans, the players and the club for being superb to him.
Lots of claps and hugs and embraces on the Old Traffford pitch. Scholes as always, understated. Ferguson is about to address the stadium.
Swansea had secured European football and Premier League status a long time ago. Man Utd were crowned champions weeks ago but this game was all about Sir Alex's last game and his team duly delivered the win his career deserved to end on.
There we have it. Manchester United delver late to secure a 2-1 win in Sir Alex Ferguson's last game at Old Trafford. The whistle has gone and that party we've been talking about will officially start.
Miscontrol by Britton gifts the ball to Kagawa who plays it to Anderson who rolls it in to Van PErsie. The striker tried to shoot first time on the half turn but didn't catch it right and Tremmel saved with ease.
Three minutes of added time and Swansea are deep in their own half.
Anderson and Van Persie move the ball up the pitch but Anderson then decides to bring the ball backwards and United keep possession. Evra now with it on the left.
Valencia slips by Davies and then drives his cross against him. Swansea win the throw though. Anderson then finds himself with space on the edge of the area but he scoops his drive over the bar.
United looking to kill this game now. The party is on with that late goal.
GOAL Rio Ferdinand scores his first Old Trafford goal in five years. The corner comes across and Vidic misses the first header but the ball bounces kindly to Rio who finishes like a striker and lashes the ball home.
Kemy Agustien is coming on for Pablo Hernandez as United prepare to take a corner won by Van Persie.
You wouldn't know that Swansea were the away team. Hernandez walks through the defence but a last ditch tackle from Valencia thwarts the attack.
Carrick tries to be clever on the edge of the area but loses the ball to Dyer. HE keeps Swansea's attack going but Valencia manages to clear.
Evra doesn't do enough to stop Routledge. They run it down the line but Vidic gets across to clear.
Poor free kick from Giggs but the Ferdinand cross that followed the clearance perhaps was worse. Swansea avert that danger.
Giggs loses the ball but Swansea's resulting cross is straight to De Gea. Van PErsie collects a huge switch but Chico brings the Dutchman down.
Anderson dribbles through the middle of the pitch but his pass to Giggs is sloppy and intercepted by Rangel. Britton now breaking with Ben Davies on the left.
United are dominating the ball again but are struggling in the final third.
Giggs handballs to get the ball back from De Guzman. Free kick to Swansea in the Utd half.
Free kick cleared for a corner. Van Persie swings it in and Vidic attacks it but his contact was poor and it goes wide.
Evra does really well to stay on his feet as he glides by De Guzman. Van Persie takes over but is tripped by Chico. Giggs stands over the free kick wide left.
Swansea keeping the ball away from Utd well here.
And here comes another legend. Ryann Giggs is coming on for Utd's goalscorer Chicharito.
Angel Rangel comes on for Michu. The 18-goal striker makes way for his compatriot.
Swansea outnumber Chicharito as he tries to keep the ball in play. Britton emerges with the ball and sets up another Swansea attack.
Jones with a brilliant last ditch challenge as Dyer's eyes lit up. The ball ran to him one-on-one with De Gea but Jones slid in to clear.
Valencia outbattles Davies and emerges powerfully with the ball down the right. Swansea now with the ball though.
Anderson with a magnificent switch but he just overhits it as Evra sprints to retrieve. He can't quite get his toe on it though and it goes for a goal kick.
Anderson is buzzing around well. Puts some good pressure on De Guzman in midfield but just can't rescue the ball. Evra makes inroads down the left but his cross is punched by Tremmel. Anderson volleys it just wide.
Danny Welbeck also off for Anderson as Swansea continue to pass the ball around at the back.
The substitutions still coming. Scholes receives the second biggest cheer of the day as he makes his Old Trafford bow. Valencia comes on for the midfield legend.
A raft of changes. Ben Davies is coming on for Neil Taylor at left back.
Chance United. Van Persie slips Welbeck in on the left but his low cross is just out of the reach of Chicharito in the middle.
Chico found in acres of space in the penalty area. He thumps it against Jones but the block is with his chest not his arm. THe ball drops again to Chico but the shot is again blocked. Excellent defending.
Brilliant break from Swansea. Michu beat the offside trap down the right before laying the ball into Dyer in the penalty area. He played it to Hernandez who turned Ferdinand inside out before forcing a smart save at the near post by De Gea.
Scholes now passing with his chest. Lovely ball to Welbeck as he turns Tiendalli and wins the free kick.
Van Persie takes the corner after a delay. Chicharito not happy with some man-handling in the box. Tremmel collects with ease though.
Scholes again forcing people into mistakes. His pass made Taylor nod the ball out for a corner.
Penalty shout waved away. Evra does well to get some space on the left and get his cross away. Van PErsie goes tumbling in the box but there was just a coming together. Clever defending rather than a foul.
Britton tries to switch to Dyer but gets it all wrong and it goes out for a throw in.
Utd are forced to go long but Van PErsie is flagged offside.
Dyer finally trots off and the ball is given back to Swansea.
Dyer is taking his time getting up and I don't blame him after that. The big Serb was pretty heavy-handed in that challenge.
Swansea look a different team. There's some urgency in their play and their passing. Vidic goes into the back of Dyer who it appears is now winded.
Making no ground with their possession at the moment. Routledge breaks and plays a one-two with Michu. He outdoes Ferdinand for pace and pokes his shot just wide of the post.
United are trying to get a foothold again after that fove-minute-frenzy from Swansea.
Well the party is not quite over but Swansea have gone some way to dampening spirits inside Old Trafford.
GOAL Michu with the goal. United fail to clear a couple of corners. Jones flicks the ball away but Dyer swings another cross and Michu flicks a boot out and makes a strong contact to send the ball past De Gea.
Pablo digs out a very good cross from the right wing but it floats over Michu and Jones can only chest out for a corner.
Dyer steams down the line and plays it to Routledge in the middle. He passes to Pablo who plays a one-two but can't get past Jones to get a cross away.
United starting the second half as they played the first. In control again.
The players are back out and United are going to kick us off.
Scholes has been sublime in the first half. His passing has been superb and pin-point as always. No mistimed tackles yet either.
Swansea look like they're on the beach already. It's been said before but it is so true. They're comfortable in possession and they do their jobs defensively but there's no major desire in their play.
So Fergie's final game at Old Trafford is going to plan. Manchester United have been playing some exhibition stuff which will definitely have pleased the gaffer.
United are playing out the half with ease. Tremmel collects a loose ball and Swansea move the ball out of defence but the referee blows for half time.
Swansea enjoying the ball in non-dangerous areas. As soon as they get close to that final third, Utd seem to have magnets on their boots as they retrieve the ball with such ease.
Tiendalli breaks on the right and leaves a huge gap as Swansea lose possession. Kagawa breaks into it and gives it to Van PErsie down the line. He cuts in on his right foot but his shot is wild and goes wide.
Van PErsie thumps it from the left edge of the penalty area. He gets plenty of venom in the shot but Tremmel gets himself behind it and saves for a corner.
Swansea using the ball well here. They've worked it to Taylor on the left who gives it to Britton. He tries a slightly ambitious pass and it is cut out by Scholes.
Scholes and Vidic almost in trouble there as Michu and Dyer put on the squeeze but two strong tackles and Utd are back with the ball.
It's a cliche but Swansea look like their season is over already. Utd have played at walking pace so far.
GOAL There it is. Chicharito with the goal. A pretty poor cross from Van Persie is messed up by Williams as it comes off his shin and there was the little Mexican to tuck it into the bottom corner. The party starts.
The players are still receiving treatment but the good news is, Welbeck is standing.
Strong tackle between Welbeck and Taylor sees them both writhe in pain. Good 50-50 but their knees seem to have clashed. Welbeck looks worse off but it was never a foul.
Scholes with a slip in midfield and it puts Evra in trouble. He is forced to bring Dyer down but Swansea concede possession.
United pull Swansea apart with that move. Scholes again starts it off as he lays the ball to Van Persie on the half-turn. HE flicks a pass to Chicharito who volleys first time but he perhaps catches it too well and it flies over.
Van Persie cuts in from the right and tries to play in Chicharito but the cross is cut out by Chico.
Kagawa dribbles in from the right and has a dig with his left foot but it flys wide.
No penalty for Utd there. Evra crosses deep to Kagawa who plays a neat one-two with Van Persie but the Japanese was on the floor and the ball went out for a goal kick.
Play finally resumes as Williams regains his senses.
Williams is down injured after being headed by Vidic. Accidental of course.
Dyer plays it in to Michu who lays it off to Routledge. The winger runs half the pitch and crosses but can only find Ferdinand's boot. Routledge tries again and this time wins a corner.
Ferdinand now perhaps a bit too over-eager. He strides forward and tries to play it in to Van PErsie but it goes out for a goal-kick.
Van Persie offside as Utd try and force the issue a bit. Swansea go long but concede possession easily.
Pretty slow possession in Utd's favour.
Scholes is seriously enjoying himself now. He plays a delightful one-two with Chicharito but the return pass is slightly behind him and as he digs out a shot, can't muster enough power to trouble Tremmel.
Swansea had the ball for a passes there but again, they got to the final third and couldn't find a way through.
Van Persie overhits a pass to Kagawa as he ran through into a huge gap in the Swansea defence. Swansea now with the ball.
Evra with a good chance. Van Persie switched but Tiendalli, despite looking in the right position, got in a mess and allowed Evra a shot on goal which Tremmel saved with ease.
Scholes again involved as he pings one out to Chicharito. He brings down expertly and lays it off to Kagawa. Utd with the ball again.
The retiree, Scholes, is starting to pull some strings as Utd take charge of the game. Swansea finding it hard to get it off Carrick, Scholes and Kagawa.
That's two tackles Scholes has made without a foul. His good work sets up Utd with the ball in the Swansea half.
Van PErsie with a superb slide-rule pass down the line for CHicharito but he couldn't return the favour to Welbeck. Scholes gets involved and makes a late run into the box but the return pass to him isn't accurate and it is cleared.
Hernandez intercepts and gets Swansea back on the ball. Switch to Tiendalli sees Swansea make up some ground.
Van Persie crosses deep from a corner but it is cleared by Williams. United again with the ball building from the back.
Just as I say that, United work a good position for KAgawa to cross from the inside right position. He finds Chicharito who heads onto the defender and out for a corner.
United are stroking the ball about with relative ease here. Swansea happy in their shape.
Scholes with a trademark ping across the field. This one though is unfortunately slightly overhit and Jones doesn't manage to bring it down.
Misplaced pass is read by WIlliams who sets Swansea on the front foot. Another misplaced pass though and Jones manages to head back ti De Gea.
Neil Taylor, returning from a leg break, goes on a foray through the middle of the pitch but Jones and Vidic team up to dispossess the full-back.
Swansea again playing it around nicely but as they try and find their frontmen, the ball is cut out. Kagawa breaks.
Swansea are trying to play their football but a misplaced pass from Williams gifts the ball to Scholes who sets Welbeck on his way.
Great pass from Ferdinand finds Kagawa who plays it in to Van PErsie. The Dutchman tries to lay it back to Kagawa but the lay-off is behind the Japanese.
Slow start this. Except for that Hernandez shot and the move that followed, this has all been midfield.
Utd control possession but go nowhere with it.
Hernandez hits the bar! Excellent football as Van Persie drives past Britton and then lays the ball to the MExican. He finishes high past Tremmel but onto the underside of the crossbar and out.
Scholes with a very uncharacteristic good tackle. He nips in to Britton to get the ball back for his team.
Scholes gets involved right away with a clever pass into Evra who made a late burst into the box. The full back gets his head to it but can't direct it to a teammate.
Kagawa sets Utd off. He dribbles in his own half and gives it to Vidic who starts spreading the ball to the full backs.
Fast start from Swansea who've had the ball the entire first minute.
And finally, here we go. Swansea get us underway.
HE's been signing things for so long he's almost forgotten there is a game. He turns his head a few times to make sure the game hasn't kicked off yet.
Guard of honour. What a wall of noise. He claps his hands and bows his head as he emerges. Amazing atmosphere. He turns and applauds every stand and then makes his way to the dugout, greeted by hundreds of people looking for autographs.
The players are emerging from the tunnel to a wall of noise. Sir Alex is at the back, chewing his gum and trying not to be centre of attention. No chance.
Regardless of how good or bad this game may be, it promises to be a hell of an occasion. There isn't a United legend not in the ground today. What an atmosphere these players will be walking out to.
And now Swansea who unfortunately have had to take a bit of a background role in the lead up to this game. They do welcome back 17-goal Michu to their attack following a hamstring injury. Dyer, Chico, Taylor, Tremmel and Pablo Hernandez also all start in six changes from the team that beat Wigan in midweek.
And now Fergie. His 723rd game at Old Trafford. He's won more domestic and European trophies than can be counted on two hands and two feet. It is his 1499th game in charge of Man Utd stretching back 26 years. There are a thousand more stats we could roll out but we'd never get to do the commentary for the match.
The other side of Fergie, is his sentimentality towards that mid-90's crop of players including Paul Scholes. The midfielder who has won countless verbal accolades from all over the world will start in his final game at Old Trafford before announcing his permanent retirement from the game. A sad day indeed.
The Rooney omission is probably a tactic from Fergie to get the spotlight off him on his big day. Either that or the speculation around his moving clubs is true and in classic Fergie fashion, there is no room for sentiment.
Well, where do we start with the big news? In a nutshell, Wayne Rooney is not even in the matchday squad, Paul Scholes is starting in his last ever Old Trafford appearance before retiring and this is Sir Alex's 723rd and last game at this famous old ground.
