Athletic were not themselves, but now they take a two-goal lead and four away goals back to their San Mames home. Schalke have to score three goals without reply to go through - otherwise they will have to net at least four themselves.
What an amazing last 20 minutes from Athletic, they were completely outplayed by Schalke and hit back with three goals in a scintillating reversal of fortunes for the hosts.
And that's the final whistle!
Brilliant run through on the right by Perez, Schalke were ripped open once more - it was cut back perfectly for the completely unmarked Muniain who popped the first time shot into the top corner.
GOAL IKER MUNIAIN!
This has been a superb game.
Fuchs goes for the shot, it has Iraizoz scrambling across his goal but it's always going wide of the post.
Three minutes to be added.
Holtby tripped. Chance for Schalke to put it into the box 30 yards out.
He pulls away from the defender, controls on the angle but just cannot force it past Iraizoz for the equaliser and the hat-trick.
So close Raul!
A speculative effort from Schalke's in-form striker, hit from outside the area and coming back off the woodwork on the bounce - so, so close to a leveller.
Huntelaar hits the post!
Great run from Gomez! He kept on going, went past two players and was able to see the whites of Schober's eyes - then scuffed a left-footed shot to the keeper.
Perez smashes one from 25 yards and it's well, well wide.
Athletic almost potted another there - Papadopoulos had to get back expertly to thwart the move. Papadopoulos is now Schalke's hero and not Raul.
Borja Ezika comes on for Oscar De Marcos. Deepest apologies!
De Marcos is caught by Papadopoulos and needs treatment (bet he's just fine)
Ten minutes ago if you'd have said this would be the score now, everyone would have laughed in your face.
What a turnaround, Susaeta with a hopeful shot on the angle - Schober could only palm it into the path of De Marcos who made no mistake when pouncing on the error.
GOAL OSCAR DE MARCOS!
And Perez gets the yellow for a late foul.
Perez takes it, and seems to go for the shot and lands it on the roof of the net.
Jurado fouls Susaeta - very dangerous on the right on the angle of the box
Athletic have come back really strongly now - they are in command and looking for a third.
Huntelaar enters the book for a late tackle on Muniain.
Almost a goal for Athletic - great last-ditch tackle by Papadopoulos
Gomez takes right footed, there's a little bit of a scrambe before Schobe claims.
Free-kick to Athletic in a dangerous area, Jones apparently fouled Llorente. Harsh.
Athletic do not deserve to be level. But this game is about goals, and they have two crucial ones away from home in Germany.
We've seen so many corners fed to the near post, this was one too and Llorente met it with the flick to beat Schobe.
GOAL FERNANDO LLORENTE!
Corner to Athetlic. Gomez takes from the left.
Jon Aurtenetxe is replaced by Inigo Perez.
It is being reported that Hildebrand was injured when Llorente scored.
Jurado fires onto the moon from 25 yards out.
Athletic get the chance of a break, Llorente tries to play in Gomez in the box - the pass is completely overhit and the move is dead.
Wonderful stuff now from Schalke, brilliant football.
Opta stat: Since last season, German sides have won more games (six) against Spanish teams than any other nation in Europe.
Raul gets it in the area on the left, spots Iraizoz just out of position and goes for the chip to the far post - it drops agonisingly wide.
Almost a Raul hat-trick!
Fuchs takes the free-kick from the right, easily cleared. It comes back to him and his effort is saved very well by Iraizoz.
Farfan is stopped from breaking down the line by Amorebieta.
Schober does brillaintly to stop the deflected free-kick going behind for a corner.
Foul by Jones on Martinez mid-way inside the Schalke half.
Stunning strike from Raul from the edge of the D - smashes an angled volley past a helpless Iraizoz. And people said Raul was washed up when he left Real.
Schalke work it back in again, it comes to Farfan who smashes one at goal - Iraizoz throws his palms in front of his face to beat it away.
Free-kick goes diagonally to Papadopoulos whose header goes a foot wide of the post.
So close Papadopoulos!
Double change for Schalke and they've now used all their subs Jose Jurado and Lewis Holtby are on for Julian Draxler and Marco Hoger
It's a high one floated in by Iraolo but Schober shows his confidence to jump and hold.
Muniain goes to the deck and it's a yellow card for the tug back by Hoger.
Huntelaar puts the ball in the back of the net ... but was clearly three yards offside.
Great run by Muniain into the box from the right, but Schober's first act is to keep out the stabbed effort.
It comes back to De Marcos on the left with Uchida caught out of position. De Marcos whips it across the box but nowhere near a team-mate.
The corner comes in from the left, it's a decent one just Huntelaar is there in the six yard box to head away.
Llorente tries to power through the centre but Papadopoulos makes a fine challenge to give away the corner.
Foul as Iturraspe is tripped by Raul.
Hildebrand surely must be injured.
Schober is a 35-year-old goalkeeper who has played five games in five years and is usually fourth choice.
The second-half begins.
Ibai Gomez is on for Ander Herrera.
Goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand, who made that error, is replaced by Mathias Schober.
The players are back out.

Schalke have been by far the better side, but Athletic caught them cold. Schalke should press on again after the break.
Back to the dive, Raul turned his man on the byline and ran into the box. As soon as he crossed the line he collapsed like a sniper had picked him out from the stand. No penalty, but no yellow card, and Athletic were furious at the dive.
And that's half-time!
Awful dive from Raul - disgraceful!
Muniain whips one across the face for Llorente, it's too far in front of him.
Cross from Uchida, cleared at the near post.
Just one shot on target so far for Athletic, that of course being the goal.
Farfan the architect once more, this time it's a great ball and Papadopoulos' header from eight yards out drops just over.
Another free-kick to Schalke, over on the right once more after Raul was felled. Dangerous. But will we get a good delivery?
You have to fancy Schalke to win this, if they do not an massive opportunity will have been missed.
Cross from Uchida, easily plucked by Iraizoz.
Fuchs win the corner, it wasn't a great one but both Farfan and Huntelaar still gets shots off - both are blocked well by defenders.
Fuchs wins a corner.
Free-kick to Schalke on the left. Fuchs takes, Iraizoz makes a hash of the clawed clearance and one of his defenders gets him out of jail.
Great play from Draxler on the left to pick out Raul at the near post, who tries to spin and fire home but fails to get proper contact on the ball.
Miss from Raul!
Corner goes to Athletic, wasted once more.
Llorente shows great strength to hold off his man, but Joel Matip does well to block it.
Opta Stat: Athletic have won three consecutive matches in Europe (exc. Qualifiers) for the first time since 1985.
Schalke just seem that little quicker on the ball, and are pressing quicker.
You can read my article on Spain becoming the number one league in Europe and the demise of Italy.
The lofted ball is again headed away with ease. Set-pieces have been disappointing.
Farfan fouled on the right. Chance to put it in the mixer.
Of course, Athletic now have an away goal which is always crucial.
Well, what a couple of minutes that was! Athletic had offered nothing but Schalke showed their mettle to hit straight back.
Farfan shoots from the edge of the box and Iraizoz shovels it behind for a corner. Far from convincing. Corner wasted.
Farfan fed in Uchida breaking into the box on the right, who rolled the ball into the near post for Raul who poked it past Iraizoz. Back level!
Schalke caught wide open, De Marcos' shot wasn't held by Hildebrand and, at the second attempt, Llorente stabbed it home.
GOAL FERNANDO LLORENTE!
Farfan once again finds the defender at the near post. So frustrating when players do that.
Uchida wins another corner straight away.
Farfan takes from the right but it fails to beat the defender at the near post. Poor.
Corner to Schalke now.
Schalke very much on top now.
Athletic have not won a La Liga game since their trip to Old Trafford on March 8. Since then they've lost three and drawn one - ruining their bid for Champions League football.
Farfan's shot from distance is deflected, it almost falls for Huntelaar but Iraizoz is out to smother.
Draxler plays a neat ball to put Huntelaar in on the angle, but his attempt at going across goal to find the opposite corner just rolls the wrong side of the post.
Oooooooooh! So close Huntelaar!
Llorente meets the ball on the half-volley 15 yards out but shins it well wide. Should have done better.
Now Herrera brings down Jones in a dangerous area close to the box, but the ref waves him to get up this time.
Farfan plays a good free-kick into the box and it leads to a scramble but Athletic finally clear. Schalke starting to impose themselves on the game?
Iturraspe is now suspended for the second leg.
Ander Iturraspe leans into Jones who is on a run. This is around 32 yards out.
Susaeta wins a corner, Athletic play it short and lose possession. Wasteful.
Now Hunterlaar is penalised for putting an arm in the face of Iturraspe.
A slow start in Gelsenkirchen.
The flat delivery from the right wing is headed away unchallenged.
Farfan is nudged over by Amorebieta. Chance to deliver into the box from the right.
The Schalke pitch has clearly been patched up throughout this season, many areas showing evidence of having been relaid.
Muniain is felled Uchida, an early foul.
It's Athletic to kick-off in Germany.
The teams are out at the Veltins Arena, Schalke unbeaten in five months on home turf.
Lewis Holtby misses out for Schalke, and is replaced in midfield by Marco Hoger. That is their only change from the team which advanced past FC Twente.
Athletic Bilbao winger Markel Susaeta knows his side cannot afford to waste any chances.
Athletic name the same team which beat Manchester United two weeks ago, with Fernando Llorente proving his fitness at the weekend against Sporting Gijon.
The winner of this tie with play either Sporting Lisbon or Metalist in the semi-finals.
Oscar de Marcos was impressive as Athletic ousted Man United in the last round.
