Belgium played their part and had the majority of the ball, showing their obvious talents. Little major threat in attack though

Belgium almost create a golden chance, but with Dembele and Lukaku 2-on-1 with Lescott. Lukaku flagged offside.
A better save from Hart moments later as Fellaini fires left-footed from 20 yards after good hold-up play by Lukaku.
Nacer Chadli does well again on the left. Shapes to cross the ball and fires a shot at goal. Comfortable for Hart.

SIDE-NETTING Walcott picks up a loose ball in midfield and slips Defoe in down the right-channel. Defoe's shot is smashed into the side-netting though.
England whip a free-kick in from the right and Mignolet gets nowhere near Rooney's cross. The ball flies loose, but Belgium scramble it clear.

Hazard crosses from the left for Belgium, finding Vertonghen at the back-post who heads well over. Must do better there.

POST AGAIN Walcott drives forward and lays the ball off to Jermain Defoe, who fires low and hard onto the far-post.
Ashley Cole once more in the right place for England, blocking a powerful drive from Fellaini. Witsel then blazes over.
Lescott has come back on, freeing Rooney of his duties as stand-in right-back. Still covers back to clear up in defence with a header back to Joe Hart.
Joe Hart gets away with dwelling on the ball, as a foul is given against Lukaku. He's lucky there, almost handed Belgium a goal.
OFF THE POST Beautiful strike from Guillhaume Gillet with his first-touch rattles the outside of the post from 25 yards.
Lescott is off the pitch to receive treatment on a blood injury.
At the other end, Lukaku manufactures a shooting chance and fires powerfully at goal. Blocked by Ashley Cole.
Milner caught offside on the left now for England and Hazard immediately looks to spring a counter from inside his own half.
Bright moments for England in attack. First, Gerrard's crossed free-kick is headed clear with Johnson lurking at the back-post. Then, moments later, Rooney slips in Defoe down the left, but the Spurs forwards shot is blocked.

Vermaelen now joins the Belgian attack and it is he who finds some space on the right flank. His cross is poor, though, and Lescott clears.

Once more the left-flank is a profitable area for Belgium, but Chadli delays his pass to Vertonghen. Offside.
Belgium continue their passing play and Chadli gets behind Glen Johnson to cross from the left. Overhit and out for a throw.
A bit of a hold-up in proceedings for the substitutions, but here we go again.

England come forward and space starts to open up ahead of Oxlade-Chamberlain, but he takes his time and the ball is pinched away by Dembele.
Belgium passing the ball well around the box. The move comes to an end with a poor cross from Mertens on the right.
England break-up the next Belgium attack, with Gerrard stepping in. Hart's poor long-pass gives the ball straight back to Fellaini.
Straight away, another chance for Belgium. Hazard slips a through ball into Fellaini, whose left-foot shot is tame and straight at Hart.
Hazard does better with this effort. Curling a shot towards the far corner from 20 yards, saved comfortably by Hart.
Ball given away to Mertens by Rooney. The PSV wide-man looks to have the defence in trouble, but Lescott defends well.
Strong spell for Belgium once again with Dembele central. The Fulham man gets a shot away, blocked by Milner.

Back underway and England look to pick out Oxlade-Chamberlain. Offside.
Thomas Vermaelen down injured after a fine piece of defending. Raced across to beat Milner to the ball, but took a blow in the ribs for his efforts.
More Belgium passing comes to an end with a mishit shot from range. No incisiveness so far.
Milner crosses from the right and headed back across goal by Oxlade-Chamberlain. Rooney can't get himself onto the knock-down.
Rooney replaces Welbeck
Belgium spraying the ball around well once more. Parker and Milner both making a nuisance of themselves in midfield though.
Vertonghen looks to pull Belgium level with an ambitious right-foot strike from 30 yards. Very high and very wide.
Hazard finds himself isolated on the right, but runs at Ashley Cole. Lescott sweeps behind to cover.
Corner swung in by Young and Terry wins the header, but well over. The England captain was being fouled by Fellaini there.
Oxlade-Chamberlain bursts in behind Gillet in the Belgian right-back position. His left-foot cross is not good, but Vertonghen concedes a corner.

SECOND HALF underway
UEFA are presenting awards to England's 100-cap players at the break. David Beckham, Peter Shilton and Sir Bobby Charlton on the pitch. The late Bobby Moore and Billy Wright also honoured.
Hasn't been the best of games though. Lets hope for an improved second half. The intensity has been there, but quality lacking.
The major disappointment, as ever - Ball retention. Belgium have been very good at keeping the ball so far.
As well as defending well, England have pressed well higher up the pitch. The goal and the later chance both came from pinching the ball off Belgian opponents.
Welbeck took his goal with aplomb to give England the lead. Positive signs for the management. Brief glimpses of Oxlade-Chamberlain's talent also
No goals conceded yet under Roy Hodgson. So, full marks to the defence. More work needed on the composure in midfield, with the ball given away too cheaply.
England are ahead and could have grabbed a second, but the better football has been played by the visitors. However, England have been very untroubled at the back so far.

Scramble in the penalty area. Welbeck, Gerrard twice and Oxlade-Chamberlain all fire away shots at goal. Belgium blocking bravely, but all last-gasp stuff. England close to doubling their lead.
Play is held up as Marouane Fellaini receives treatment. Clashed with Ashley Cole in midfield. Little wrongdoing on either man's part.
All Belgium once again. As with Norway, they are very accomplished on the ball. Lovely passing interchanges amongst the attacking unit.

The new Chelsea signing almost make amends. Twenty-five yards out and Hazard takes a shot at goal. Low and hard, but straight at Hart.
Fellaini gets forward down the right and wins a corner. Crossed in by Hazard, but too high for his targets.
England brimming with confidence. Belgium, though, have the ball once more. Keeping it well in midfield.
A dilemma then for Hodgson. Carroll was set to be the centre-forward for the Euros, but Welbeck is staking a claim.
GOAL England 1-0 Belgium Welbeck with a classy finish!!! Gerrard steals the ball back for England in midfield, Ashley Young slips in Welbeck down the left and the Man Utd striker lofts the ball delightfully over the advancing Mignolet.
Gerrard once more looks to produce a raking pass towards Ashley Young. Easily cut-out.
England look to attack with Oxlade-Chamberlain. Gerrard runs powerfully in behind the defence, but caught offside.
England give the ball away cheaply down the right, again. Belgium counter and overlap on the left. Vertonghen crosses, but too high for Fellaini.

Belgium go long looking for Fellaini, flicked on towards Mirallas, but Lescott sweeps behind.
