Paul Ince post game: "I thought Inter played as a team."
Opinions also being expressed that Alberto Aquilani was missed for Milan, tonight. It's a bad result for them, and Inter are now just five points behind second-placed AC Milan in fifth place. Juventus still top the table with a one point advantage over Milan.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed to impress in another big game...
Milan showed that, despite having the vast majority of possession, they lacked the initiative to break Inter down and, for all of their talent, lacked a coherent style of play tonight.
Inter can now truly consider themselves to be back in the Serie A title race. That's a superb result for them and what a clinical, efficient performance it was from them.
Full-time! Milan 0-1 Inter
A great chance for Inter to waste time...
El Shaaraway booked a high challenge on Lucio
Three minutes of extra-time to be played...
Pazzini off, Forlan on.
Milan now committing men forward but Inter are still getting their tactics right (how often do you get to say that about one of Ranieri's sides?) and remain disciplined, keeping their shape.
Motta booked for the foul. Milan's free-kick.
Inter win possession on the edge of the box and look to break but Milan instantly recover possession...
Maicon clears yet another deep Milan cross. No real threat being posed but, to their credit, Milan aren't rushing and are still trying to create a reasonable opening.
...Milito opens the scoring for Inter...
And the substitute almost makes an instant impact, producing two good saves from Caeser with his first touches!
Pato off, El Shaaraway on
Good saave from Caeser! Seedorf's shot from distance stinging the 'keeper's gloves
The lack of invention and movement from Ibrahimovic up front has been pretty damning for someone thought by many to be one of the world's best.
Milan again spreading possession but Inter are holding their shape well and not leaving any openings.
Nocerino off, Seedorf on.
Good tackle from Emmanuelson at left-back. Inter now enjoying possession in Milan's half - it's not unthinkable that they'll score another.
Inter win the corner. Maicon to take as Seedorf looks to be ready to come on.
Pato can't connect with the ball properly and a great chance was wasted! That should have been a simple tap in for the Brazilian.
Inter are now likely to play a 4-4-1-1 in a bid to close out the victory, with Pazzini the lone striker.
Milito off, Sneijder on
The outstanding Dutchman is usually thought of as an offensive player but it'd be a surprise of Ranieri's attentions weren't for him to help Inter to retain possession...
Wesley Sneijder's warming up to come on for Inter...
Their performance has declined in this half and they're actually looking rather sluggish now.
Milan again with the ball in defence...
Nagatomo, playing in midfield since Chivu's introduction, shoots straight at Abbiati. Not a great effort but he's been impressive tonight.
Milan still failing to seriously threaten.
Next corner is also wasted as Ibrahimovic scuffs a shot wide. Not what a team expects from its 'star' player.
Robinho crosses to Boateng at the near post but the shot's deflected out for another corner...
Ibrahimovic, ever the mercurial talent, gives the ball away with an aimless shank forwards. No-one neat it, and Inter gratefully accept possession.
Nesta booked for a foul. Free-kick to Inter.
Inter bring another defender on as Claudio Ranieri looks to tighten his side up further and defend the lead they have.
Alvarez off, Chivu on
It's surprising to see a player of Robinho's talent only on the bench. He could make a real difference for MIlan now.
Zambrotta off, Robinho on.
How much longer will it be before the temptation to use both Robinho and Clarence Seedorf proves too strong for Allegri...
Boateng booked for the foul on Nagatomo
Still difficult to see where any Milan equaliser will come from...
Julio Caeser saves well from Ibrahimovic! The striker seemed to have run out of space and ideas in the penalty box so chipped a cross across the face of goal, but the Brazilian punched clear.
Ibrahimovic and Pato both now look increasingly frustrated up front. Milan have to try and make more use of them both.
Milan again wasteful in possession. An aimless long ball towards Ibrahimovic and Pato is collected with ease by Lucio...
Nagatomo cuts in on the left, shooting with the right and wins the corner for Inter following a deflection...
Abate gives the ball away again! Poor from the right-back and the mistake leads to a shooting opportunity for Alvarez, but Abbiati saves well.
Nagatomo intercepts Milan's cross and clears for a throw-in...
Pato and Zanetti battle for the ball near the left-hand Inter corner spot and, despite the Brazilian's appeals, the decision goes Inter's way...
Milan's naivety in possession has been exposed, and the pressure's now on to produce something to avoid what would be considered an embarrassing defeat.
Out of nowhere, a rather unthreatening Inter cross came to Milito after Abate's error gifts the Argentinian enough time and space to produce a trademark clinical finish into the bottom right corner past Abbiati.
GOAL Inter score! 1-0!
Inter's subsequent break is headed clear by Nesta, the veteran Italian clearly not prepared to take any risks.
Danger there for Inter as Milan threaten: a low pass across the penalty area following a delightful turn from Pato just needed someone to convert but Inter survive. Better from Milan.
Milan with the throw-in near the corner spot, but Abate proves ponderous in possession and wastes the move...
As in the first-half, Milan are currently dominating possession but are failing to do anything of note with the ball.
Emmanuelson, who, it must be said, has an impressive engine, breaks through the middle but the chance is wasted with the lazy Ibrahimovic offside and barely strolling to get back into position...
Inter kick-off for the second half...
Paul Ince, ex-Inter Milan, at half-time: "Zlatan's playing too deep..."
Milan are certainly going to have to be more clinical in possession, because despite the fact they've seen far more of the ball, it's Inter that look more dangerous when they're going forward. Milan currently pose very little threat.
Half-time: AC Milan 0-0 Internazionale
2 minutes of added time to be played...
Until Van Bommel hitting the bar just then, that is! A great effort from the experienced Dutchman out of the blue!
For all of Milan's superior possession, they're failing to do anything of note with the ball.
Milan waste the chance to break with a shocking ball from Zambrotta! Cambiasso's optimistic backheel in the Milan area meant the home side recovered the ball but it was wasted.
Boateng fires wide from distance. Milan again showing their frustration when they would have been better served creating a better opportunity. Disappoiting from the trequartista.
...who fails to control quite as he'd please and fires straight at the alert Abbiati. A reminder to Milan of Inter's threat - the 'away' side have certainly been more dangerous in front of goal, even if they haven't had as much of the ball as they'd like.
Inter progressing further forward, with Nagatomo breaking down the left and crossing for Alvarez...
But his play is ponderous and predictable. Milan now have the ball back in defence.
Milan now breaking through Abate down the right...
Milito, in particular, is a clinical finisher so it'd be no surprise to see Inter play counter-attacking football and look to use his qualities.
Possession-wise, Milan are by far the more superior team but it's difficult to argue they've had any real chances and deserve the lead.
Milan pressing higher up the pitch and currently making it difficult for Inter to escape their own half...
Ibrahimovic volleys over with his heel! Nice technique but it was always going to be difficult.
Before Milan's own counter is ended by a foul on Ibrahimovic. It was a foul, but the Swede's dive in ensuring the foul was given was rather comical.
Boateng defends well with Pazzini looking to volley an effort goalwards...
Little has changed. Inter aren't putting on any pressure to win the ball back unless they consider the situation to be dangerous, while Milan are currently patiently waiting for an opening. The occasional long(er) ball is forced but it comes to little because, simply, there's nothing to aim for.
Milan break again. Ibrahimovic, casual as ever, is tackled by Lucio for a throw-in when on the edge of Inter's penalty box.
Maicon heads the corner clear. Zambrotta's attempts to reignite their attack with a deep cross but Julio Caeser eventually collects.
Emmanuelson to take...
Milan now threatening again, with Pato's low ball across the penalty box, after getting in behind Maicon, deflected out for a corner by Samuel.
Milito and Maicon exchange possession delightfully, playing a swift 'one-two' in the penalty box before the Brazilian fires at Abbiati. Best move of the game so far.
Milan again looking to build from the back with, in truth, little pressure from Inter to win back possession until the final third.
Boateng fires over! Emmanuelson's low corner - a typical training ground move - gives the Ghanain a shooting opportunity but he fails to keep it down.
Cambiasso challenges Pato for a Milan corner. Well defended by the Argentinian.
Before Samuel - unsurprisingly - fouls. Milan free-kick.
Milan win possession and begin countering through Emmanuelson
Maicon crosses deep into Milan's box and though it's cleared, the danger remains and Inter still look to attack...
Van Bommel plays a lovely bass over the top of INter's defence towards Pato but both he and Ibrahimovic are ruled offside. Free-kick to Inter.
Milan certainly the lively and more confident of the two sides, so far...
But it comes to little as the ball eventually rolls out for an Inter goal kick. Julio Caeser to take.
Milan win the corner...
Julio Caeser gives the ball away to Milan following a poor clearance. In his defence he was put under pressure by the passback it should have been dealt with better.
Motta's now back on his feet, so play will resume imminently.
Milan kick the ball out with Thiago Motta down injured.
Now it's Pato's turn to shoot, but he fires wide!
Ibrahimovic takes his first shooting opportunity to test Julio Caeser but the Brazilian 'keeper is alert to the danger and saves well.
Poor use of the free-kick. Inter nullify any threat and now look to break, with the evergreen Zanetti leading a counter attack.
Inter concede another free-kick, this time for the foul on Boateng, or 'Prince'. Probably not shooting distance but the danger remains present.
Milan now patiently building from the back...
Well defended from Milan who held a high defensive line from Maicon's free-kick, catching Thiago Motta offside. For his part, Motta's header past Abbiati deserved a goal.
Inter have a goal disallowed!
Regardless, here he is.
And Milan now win their own in a similar position following a foul by Samuel on Pato, who some expected to be playing for Paris St-Germain in France by now.
Milan concede an early free-kick to Inter on the edge of the half-way line...
As has come to be commonplace in fixtures for both Milan sides, there are some ageing talents on display, Alessandro Nesta and Walter Samuel amongst them...
AC Milan kick-off...
Both teams are out on the pitch after completing a minute's silence and kick-off is now imminent...
Inter know that the teams at the top of Serie A have dropped points regularly so a win here can inspire a potential, unlikely title challenge. Doing so is easier said than done, however, with the dangerous Zlatan Ibrahimovic-Alexandro Pato frontline to contend with.
AC Milan have been guilty of enjoying Internazionale's decline more than any other, but Inter's form has improved more recently.
Evening all. Serie A's premier derby is now just moments away from kick-off and, as usual, we'll be bringing you coverage of events at the San Siro...
