Gerrard produced a captain's performance to fire his club to a fine derby victory and silence the critics of recent weeks.
Everton played well in parts but Liverpool were devastating in spells and deserved the victory.
And that's full-time.
Drenthe slipped just in the Liverpool half and the break is on. Gerrard brusts forward and feeds in Suarez, but rather than shoot he cuts back and squares for his skipper to sidefoot into the roof of the net. That's the second hat-trick of his career.
GOAL STEVEN GERRARD HAT-TRICK
Osman gets the ball stuck under his feet and can't get a shot off, it runs to Rodwell in the D again but he fires harmlessly wide.
Jose Enrique was also booked for that incident when kicking the ball into Hibbert.
Tony Hibbert goes into the book for stupidly kicking the ball away.
Four minutes added time.
Handball against Felliani. He looks frustrated.
Rodwell sees a shot from inside the D blocked.
Drenthe is in danger of losing his cool and gets some words of advice from referee Phil Dowd.
Liverpool are set to move within two points of sixth-placed Newcastle and five points clear of Sunderland and Everton.
Baines tries to play a 1-2 with Distin, the centre-back's ball back to him is woeful.
Drenthe for a clumsy tackle on Downing.
If you were wondering, Marseille and Bayern Munich are through in the Champions League.
Liverpool unhappy as Baines boots the ball into touch to give the ball back after the treatment.
So we have a stoppage while Pienaar gets some treatment.
Pienaar is down with a head injury claiming an elbow by Gerrard, it was nothing other than an arm being used for leverage.
Madness! Football's greatest crime! Liverpool shift the free-kick TWICE and by the time the shot has been hit a defender is a yard away and makes the block.
Baines is booked for a tug back on Suarez on the edge of the box. Looked soft.
David Moyes' treble change has failed to pay dividends here.
Opta stat: Liverpool v Everton has seen more red cards (20) than any other fixture in Premier League history, 11 of those in the last 14 meetings. It's not been that kind of game tonight.
Liverpool fans think they've got a penalty for a push on Carroll by Hibbert. The ref gives it the other way.
It's gone a bit scrappy.
Jordan Henderson, the man with the 1930s hairstyle, is replaced by Dirk Kuyt, the man with the spaghetti hairstyle.
Pienaar's corner only finds Reina. Pienaar has been poor.
Corner to Everton.
Gerrard finds Suarez who has the chance to shoot, he goes with the outside of his left which was always a big ask and it goes well wide.
Gerrard almost gets in on goal, Distin with the last-ditch header to deny him.
Opta stat<.i>: Leon Osman has made more Premier League appearances (239) than any other Everton player in the David Moyes era.
Everton have played well, they've just had nothing in the final third.
Here's one for Liverpool fans. Philipp Degen has just come on for Basel - and they've just gone 7-0 down at Bayern.
Felliani the provider this time, playing it in to Jelavic at the near post but he can only guide it into the sidenetting. Ah, and the flag was up for offside too.
Oooooooh! So close Jelavic!
Everton need these subs to change their fortunes fast.
Leon Osman, Nikica Jelavic and Royston Drenthe on for Seamus Coleman, Victor Anichebe and Denis Stracqualursi.
Treble change coming up for Everton.
Baines does well and cuts a pass back for Rodwell, his shot is poor and would have been going wide before a defender got a block in. He had to hit the target there.
Spearing tries a volley from 29 yards out. It's still rising.
Poor play from Distin up against Kelly and he gives away a corner.
Enrique's deflected shot runs for Suarez but he cannot make proper connection with the shot.
Opta stat: Before tonight Stewart Downing had created more chances (44) than any other player who hasn't made an assist in the Premier League this season.
Pienaar with a foul on Henderson.
Downing's ball flashed across the six-yard and Carroll was within a whisker of turning it home.
Oooooooo! Carroll almost scores again!
Liverpool dominating now and win a corner, which is worked short and worked back to Downing on the left...
Terrible defending again as Suarez is allowed to turn on the byline and work into the area again, he cuts it back for Carroll who drags an effort wide on the angle.
Oooooooooh. So close Carroll.
Yet again against the run of play. Henderson superbly picks out the run of Suarez who cuts into the box. The defence is too scared to put a challenge in and when Suarez over-ran his touch it was perfect for the onrushing Gerrard who lashed a shot into the roof of the net.
GOAL STEVEN GERRARD
Steven Gerrard puts Liverpool in front.
Liverpool really struggle to keep the ball when they get it, Everton unable to make it count.
Everton enjoying all the possession early in the second period.
Baines delivers but it only finds Gerrard who heads clear.
Everton get a free-kick for a trip by Henderson on Baines on the left. Great chance to deliver.
Everton kick off in the second half.
Opta stat: Everton have only ever won one Merseyside derby in the Premier League having conceded first, and that was the first ever Premier League meeting (Dec 92).
Join me for the second half. In the meantime you can follow me on Twitter @dalejohnsonESPN
Everton have a strong bench and have played promisingly, so David Moyes has plenty of cards to play.
Liverpool started well and should have been in front in the first ten minutes, but Everton grew into the game and went behind against the run of play.
And there goes the half-time whistle.
One minute to be added on.
And then Gerrard trips Pienaar.
It's been a good, free-flowing game. No bad challenges and the referee has had nothing of note to do.
Corner to Liverpool. Gerrard takes but Carroll cannot win the header.
Fine defending from Distin, winning the ball when Suarez looked to be in on goal.
Baines delivered from the left and found Stracqualursi at the near post whose header found Reina - either side and the keeper may have been struggling.
Oooooooooooooh! Everton chance!
Oooooooooh! Brilliant run down the right by Kelly, latching on to the reverse pass from Gerrard. He breaks into the box but drags his shot wide of the far post from the angle.
Kellly crosses from the right, Carroll tries the near post flick but fails to connect properly.
Well that came against the run of play.
Liverpool get a break as a deflection runs for Kelly, his shot is saved well by Howard but the loose ball runs to Gerrard on the edge of the box who floated a placed shot over the defenders and into the back of the net.
Anichebe turns in the box after receiving a cross from Pienarr and tries to get a shot off but Gerrard is there to block.
Opta stat: 23 - Most wins in the 90th minute or later in Premier League history: Liverpool 23, Arsenal 19. Man Utd are 5th with 12.
Another decent cross from Baines, cleared at the near post.
Suarez thinks he's through on goal but the flag goes up as he was running back from an offside position.
Another corner to Everton, Distin almost wins the header and there's a bit of a scramble but Liverpool clear.
Baines plays the corner to Anichebe at the near post but rather than flick it on into the box he manages to head away and out of the area.
Brilliant play from Hibbert as he leaves Enrique on the deck with a fine turn, he tries to cross into the box and it's deflected behind for another corner.
Rodwell tries to burst down the right, Enrique uses his body strength brilliantly to muscle him off and clear down the pitch.
Podcast host Dan Mason On Twitter: "Fellaini should have worn a big fake Scouser moustache for this game."
Now Everton put the pressure on.
Pienaar delivers from the left, it found Felliani at the near post who only seemed to need to nod it home but he failed to connect.
Baines wins a corner. Chance for Everton to put it in the mixer.
Great ball into the area by Hibbert, it was a dangerous one but Skrtel made sure he was there first to flick it away with his head.
There was some wrestling off the ball between Baines and Carroll with the Liverpool man seeming to have thrown an arm. Not seen by the officials.
Gerrard takes from the left, Rodwell heads to safety unchallenged.
Enrique finds a good run from Suarez who tries to play it across the area and wins a corner off Felliani.
It's an entertaining game, both sides going for it.
Opat stat: The only time Liverpool collected fewer points at home after 13 games was back in 1951/52.
Everton break and have four on three with Pienaar, he must pick out a team-mate with Anichebe free on the left. He tries to find Stracqualurasi in the centre - and passes straight to Skrtel.
Downing tries to outpace Hibbert down the left, the Everton defender gets a good tackle in.
Carroll and Suarez linked up very well there, the big man flicking on for Suarez for the shot.
Now Suarez gets through in the box but his shot isn't great and gives Howard a comfortable save with his right hand and Everton clear.
Anichebe and Carragher go chasing after a ball off the pitch ... Anichebe can't stop himself flying over the advertising board and disappearing from view. He's fine.
Cross from Downing finds Carroll eight yards out, but there's no power on the header and Howard claims.
Baines goes on a superb run, nutmegs a defending in the box and lays it off for Pienaar - who fires miles over. That was a chance.
Ooooooh! Everton wasteful!
That has woken Liverpool up. Downing almost finds a team-mate in the box, good defending though.
The loose ball then runs to Henderson who seems certain to score - this time it's Rodwell with an immense block to snuff out the danger.
Enrique played a ball into Suarez on the edge of the box, he fed in Gerrard on a great run and he seemed certain to score but Howard makes a great save down low to his left.
Ooooooooooooooo! Great play by Liverpool!
Liverpool poor with the ball in the Everton half.
It's gone very quiet - on the pitch - in the last couple of minutes.
Opta Stat: If the season had started on January 1, Liverpool would be in the relegation zone (W1 D2 L5).
Carroll is almost fed through the centre by Suarez, Jagielka nips in to take the ball before Carroll can pull the trigger.
Liverpool start well. A cross from Henderson on the right is cleared.
It's Liverpool to kick off!
The players are out on the pitch at Anfield, it's an electric atmosphere.
The record for Liverpool v Everton at Anfield in David Moyes' ten years in the Premier League: Liverpool: 4 Draws: 5 Everton: 0. Everton have scored 5 goals in 9 games.

So Everton leave a lot of their big names on the bench. And Tim Cahill does not feature in the 16.
Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Baines, Fellaini, Rodwell, Pienaar, Coleman, Stracqualursi, Anichebe. Subs: Mucha, Heitinga, Jelavic, Drenthe, Cahill, Neville, Osman
So Gerrard is back in the starting line-up while Henderson, Downing, Suarez AND Carroll all start. However there is no Craig Bellamy in squad. Carragher is back in the starting line-up, replacing Coates.
Liverpool: Reina, Kelly, Enrique, Skrtel, Carragher, Spearing, Gerrard, Henderson, Downing, Suarez, Carroll. Subs: Doni, Shelvey, Maxi, Flanagan, Kuyt, Adam, Coates.
Gus Poyet, having been beaten by Liverpool in the FA Cup, now thinks that the Reds could lose Luis Suarez
Kenny Dalglish is under pressure, despite the Carling Cup win.
