So it's Atletico Madrid v Fulham in the first ever Europa League final in Hamburg on May 12. Who'd have thought it.
Liverpool are left to face Chelsea on Sunday looking for the win which will keep them in the hunt for the Champions League, but it looks most likely they will be back in this competition next season. And remember the team which finishes seventh starts in July.
Liverpool were in the box seat and looked good for the victory, but Forlan's goal sapped them of all their energy.
That's it! It's all over!
Just 30 seconds to go.
Atletico eat up the seconds with their final change as Aguero is replaced by Salvio
Atletico had a break, three on one, but Reyes' pass to Aguero was woeful and it breaks down.
Two minutes to be added on.
Into the last minute, Liverpool still cannot get sight of goal.
Kuyt almost gets in on goal, but loses his footing at the vital moment.
Babel is robbed as he fails to find a pass. The story of the game.
It comes to nothing. Two minutes left.
Liverpool pushing now, a long throw.
A change for Atletico as Forlan is replaced by Camacho
A tired Gerrard tries to cross but it is blocked.
Liverpool are just hitting long, hopeless balls. It's hard to see them getting that crucial third goal.
Will Liverpool be able to muster one chance? Just the one may be all they need.
Gerrard almost forces the ball through for Kuyt - Atletico are out quickly and the Dutchman is offside.
Liverpool make their final change and now it will be Pacheco who comes on for Benayoun.
Kuyt goes down in the box looking for a penalty for a tug by Dominguez. Never in a million years.
Ohhh! A break by Atletico, Forlan feeds in Simao and he lifts it over Reina - but over the bar too. That should have been game, set, match
Liverpool look so tired, deflated by that Forlan goal
Forlan has been the scourge of Liverpool so many times, and it looks like it has happened yet again
A cross from El Zhar .... it's abysmal and put over the goal and out of play.
It is Degen who comes on, for Mascherano.
Well, Degen looks to be coming on. A defender.
It's all so tense, the seconds tick away.
No sign of another change from Rafa, but there's not much on the bench.
Madrid kick-off again. Don't expect them to be doing anything in a hurry.
Half-time in extra-time.
Reyes almost gets in on goal and this time Johnson does his job.
Just to remind you, as it stands Atletico Madrid will go through on the away goals rules as it stands. Liverpool MUST score again.
Two minutes to be added to this half.
Actually, we're now told it was Dominguez who was booked. De Gea is up and ready to continue. Surprise that. "Cheat" sing the home fans.
Lopez is booked. Any more?
De Gea and Kuyt go for the ball at the same time and the goalkeeper gets there first. There's plenty of handbags flying around with three Atletico players converging on the Liverpool forward.
That was worful, woeful defending all round from Liverpool. Johnson caught out and then Forlan with the freedom of Anfield.
Johnson is outjumped by Reyes, it's woeful defending, and he picks out a totally unmarked Forlan at the back post and he finds the roof of the net
GOAL! Diego Forlan!
Liverpool starting to sit deep.
Jurado fires inches wide of Reina's left post. So, so close. Squeaky bum time.
Reina spills a shot from Reyes and for a moment there's mayhem in the Liverpool box. Is this the way it's going to be now?
A change for Atletico now, Silva Paulo Assuncao is replaced by Jose Manuel Jurado in an attacking change
Gerrard takes the corner, it's headed away easily.
Great run by Benayoun and he earns a corner kick off Perea
Atletico have been so poor up top, you struggle to see them scoring.
So, Liiverpool lead but remember that if Atletico can muster a goal, Rafa's men will have to score another or lose on away goals.
Gerrard couldn't force a way through, it came to Lucas who delivered a delightful chip over the top for the onrushing Benayoun. The keeper should have kept it out as the shot lacked power, but Liverpool are in front.
Babel is tripped, and Gerrard will get the chance to put one in the box. It's headed away but ...
Babel turns in the box but his cross hits the back of a defender. He is so often so poor.
I've just spotted those bizarre extra officials, they must have been doing a superb job.
The fear here is that we'll play out time to penalties, both sides too worried about letting in a goal to go on the attack.
Liverpool kick-off extra time.
Only one change in this game so far.
Fulham have done it! A comeback 2-1 victory sends them into the first Europa League final in Hamburg's very own season.
We're sure that all of you sat watching the game on your comfy sofas, complete with a cool, refreshing crate of beer feel for us greatly. Hopefully this next period will be more exciting.
And there goes the final whistle. We're here to stay, folks.
We've seen 15 shots in the whole 90 minutes, with eight on target. And neither keeper has had to pull off a worldy.
Just two minutes to be added on. We're going to be here for another 30 ...
El Zhar has played 39 minutes of football for Liverpool this season ... hardly a matchwinner
Alberto Aqilani again fails to play 90 minutes as El Zahr comes on for him.
Kuyt is tripped and Liverpool get the chance to waste some seconds.
Forlan tries to get past Lucas but the Brazilian does well.
A sublime over the top finds Forlan in the clear, and the man who has been anonymous in this game fails to control. That should have been a chance to put this match to bed ... and us too.
Liverpool have offered little in the last 10 minutes, they look the more nervous now. The concerns of the crowd seeping into the players' minds.
Now Aquilani is held back by Assuncao inside the Atletico half.
Mascherano trips Simao, that looked a complete dive. Free-kick given but somehow Mascherano escapes the booking. It was a dive, mind.
Lopez strikes from 25 yards, Benayoun blocks. Late pressure from the La Liga outfit.
Liverpool fans can't look as Simao lofts a ball to the back stick, it's headed back across the face of goal and Gerrard manages to hook clear.
Carragher is booked for holding back Aguero.
Gerrard takes the corner, and finds De Gea's gloves.
Brilliant run from Johnson, cutting onto his right foot from the left flank. Space opened up and the shot was straight at De Gea, who fists over the bar.
Gerrard just runs out of space on the egde of the box, closed down by Atletico defenders. The chance is gone.
Liverpool fans everywhere will be on the edge of their seats, from Brussels to Bridlington. Closer and closer to an extra 30 minutes.
It's comes in from the right, again Lucas fails to do anything with a ball that flew at his head.
Dominguez gives away a corner, now a chance for Liverpool.
GOAL! Fulham 2-1 Hamburg! Zoltan Gera the European hero! Now they just need to hold on.
Garcia shoots from 35 yards and puts it well over the bar.
Garcia shoots from 35 yards and it's cleared before it reaches the penalty area.
Corner to Atletico again, this time on the right. Reyes jogs over to take, and Carragher clears at the near post.
It's been no European classic, which is why an extra 30 minutes will feel that little bit more painful
Valera is down after Babel managed to head him in the skull. He'll be fine though...
Corner to Atletico now. It's flung in from the left by Simao and Agger heads away. A shot is smashed straight back in by Reyes and Gerrard gets the block.
GOAL! Fulham 1-1 Hamburg. Simon Davies in the 70th minute. But they need another.
Extra-time and penalties looking increasingly likely, a tale of woe for those of us stuck in an office.
Lucas wins the header, and manages to direct it away from goal rather than towards De Gea's net.
Gerrard delivers the free-kick from the left, there's lots of tussling going on.
A woeful pass from Babel out wide to Kuyt. And as Valera thinks he can win the ball he catched Kuyt. A free-kick and a booking.
If Liverpool want to push for a second goal they have the option of Spanish Under-21 international Dani Pacheco on the bench, could he be the key to unlock the door?
Kuyt shoots straight at De Gea, maybe the game is starting to get stretched.
Agger blocks a snap shot from Reyes.
Aquilani tries a quick first time ball to Kuyt blind, and gets it all wrong.
The free-kick is on the right, Atletico opt for a square pass to Garcia who shoots way, way, way wide. Woeful.
Now Lucas is penalised for a foul on Reyes. The ref looked to play the advantage but there was none.
Another foul by Assuncao, this time as Atletico were pressing.
Benayoun almost has sight of goal from just a few yards out, Lopez does superbly to hook it away from in front of the Israeli's chest.
Hamburg still lead at Fulham, who need two goes to turn it around.
It's a midfield battle right now. Not much to write home about.
Assuncao has a shot, it's from 25 yards once again but always arrowing over the bar. Atletico can get no closer to the goal at the moment.
Mascherano really does rival the likes of Craig Bellamy for yapping away at officials. He will never learn.
Now Gerrard goes down, Assuncao the guilty party and again the card is out.
Aquilani has gone into the book for a shirt pull on Garcia earlier in the play.
Brilliant chasing from Babel to catch what seemed to be a hopeless cause. But as is the way with the Dutch forward, he doesn't really know what to do with the ball.
Chelsea fans will be praying for extra-time to tire those limbs ahead of Sunday's Premier League showdown. We, however, will not.
Aquilani is tripped by Assuncao, free-kick.
Mascherano's pass down the line is too much for Gerrard.
Simao fires miles over from 25 yards. Promising start from the La Liga side.
Liverpool may now be firm favourites to reach the final, but a goal for Atletico will need the home side needing two.
The players are back, and Atletico kick off.
We'll be back in 15 minutes for the second half.
A perfect boost for Liverpool going into the interval. This game really is in the balance now. Atletico have offered little and you feel that if Liverpool can get a second they may get a third too.
And the half-time whistle goes.
One minute to be added on.
This has to change Atletico's gameplan now. Surely they will have to come out in the second half with more adventure.
Benayoun turns superbly down the right, fooling his man, and while Kuyt can't connect with the cross Aquliani does - finding the bottom corner and giving De Gea no chance. It's all level on aggregate!
It comes in from the right and Reina gloves it with ease.
Gerrard is boooked after catching Arguero late. It had to be a card, the skipper was late there. And a chance to put it into the box.
De Gea takes all the time in the world to take the free-kick. That's going to happen more and more.
Kuyt is fuming after being flagged offside. Maybe frustration is creeping in.
Once more it's Gerrard, it's headed away by Assuncao but only back to Gerrard. This time he puts too much on the cross.
Corner to Liverpool. Gerrard rakes from the the right, Lucas wins the header it flicks off a defender and goes behind for another corner.
Kuyt is running from one side of the pitch to the other chasing the ball as usual.
Liverpool will need to change things, but Rafa oftens leaves things too late. Will he do so again here?
Gerrard shoots, it looks on target but clips the foot of Benayoun and goes behind for a goal-kick
Suddenly the Kop comes to life again, hope has returned.
Gerrard goes for goal and De Gea punches clear. It had to be special to score from there
Perea loses the ball and deliberately brings down Babel afterwards. Free-kick to Liverpool just outside the box on the left.
No! Disallowed! A superb header from Agger, which was guided beyond De Gea, but he had checked back from a offside position. Correct call.
De Gea has had very little to do so far. That must change if Liverpool are to reach Hamburg.
Aquilani almost reads Benayoun's first time flick, but Atletico mop up.
Reyes is felled by Babel, that seemed a soft one.
Aguero almost gets in, gets past Reina chasing the long ball. He opts to chip to the far post when at a tight angle, but there was no-one at the far post.
There's a Magpie on the pitch ... there'll be 11 next season ... sorry ...
Oooh! Great move from Liverpool and somehow Kuyt fires over from inside the six-yard box. Mascherano was the provider at the end of a flowing move.
Hamburg have scored at Craven Cottage through Mladen Petric (22). Fulham now need two goals.
Aguero catches Carragher after the ball had gone. Carragher's not happy with that, there's a bit of handbags but we play on after a few words from the ref.
Gerrard shoots from inside the D, and Aguero makes a great block to protect De Gea
Perea's first time cross is over-hit and easy for Reina
Another foul by Mascherano. The tightrope is being walked.
Johnson is caught all over the shop there. He could be the weak link at left-back.
There's a rumour that Torres could play in the final if Liverpool make it. But surely that will be way too soon after his knee op.
The corner comes in from the left, Reina gets a good fist to it and Liverpool come away.
Garcia unleashes a snap shot from just short of 30 yards, Reina has to get down and turn the ball round the post on the bounce.
Atletico growing in confidence now, looking to put pressure on the home defence.
Aguero caught late by Mascherano, that's a free-kick which comes to nothing. Mascherano would miss a possible final if booked in this game.
Aguero almost manages to flick Forlan through on goal, great defensive work from Mascherano to shield him from the ball.
It's gone a bit dull. De Gea's goal kick goes right through to Reina.
Fernando Torres is in the side to support his team-mates against his former side.
Liverpool's version of the Skol song is being sung. It took hours to write the lyrics.
And Atletico break. This is the danger. Reyes sprints down the right and crosses low, it runs through to Simao who inexplicably takes a touch rather than shooting from inside the D and he's closed down by three men. Chance gone.
Kuyt almost wins control in the box, but Atletico can clear.
Aquilani shoots from 20 yards, it's low and straight at De Egea.
Liverpool passing it around the back four. How they must long for the day when they could pass it back to the keeper. They used to win titles then.
The game has definitely calmed down again now, and it could be a patient night for Liverpool in search of a goal.
Great chance for Babel to cross, and is often the case with him he wastefully hits it over everyone.
Free-kick to Liverpool. It was a chance to pump into the box but it's played short to Carragher and the chance is gone.
Liverpool don't have much on the bench tonight, which could be a concern if they need reinforcements in search of the tie-levelling goal.
It's still all Liverpool, Atletico happy to soak up the early pressure
The whole of the Kop is on its feet, brought to life by this early flow of pressure.
Gerrard completely overhits the corner but Johnson battles for it and there's a third corner to the home side. Again De Egea has to punch to safety.
Corner to Liverpool, De Egea fists away without confidence and it eventually results in another corner. And we're still in the first minute.
Ohhh! Nine seconds gone and De Egea blocks Benayoun's shot from a tight angle. Fine start
Liverpool will kick-off this Europa League semi-final second leg. It's 0-1 to Atletico. Gerrard to Aquilani...
Atletico, led up front by Liverpool's bogey man Diego Forlan, will be dangerous on the break.
It's crucial that Liverpool keep a clean sheet tonight. If they fail to do that they must score three times.
"You'll Never Walk Alone" rings around Anfield. We've got the usual fans with their scarves upside down ... every time ...
We're now hearing that - wait for this - Glen Johnson is actually playing left back and Mascherano right-back in a 4-1-3-2. Hmm.
Atletico make three changes from the side which started in the Vicente Calderon a week ago, the most significant being the return of striker Sergio Aguero after suspension.
Kuyt starts up front with Babel, while Steven Gerrard, Alberto Aquilani, Yossi Benayoun, Javier Mascherano and Lucas all start.
Liverpool go with three at the back - Jamie Carragher, Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger - and flood the midfield in an attempt to block Atletico's breaks.
Dirk Kuyt has passed a fitness test on a calf injury to take his place up front, while David Ngog has recovered from a back complaint to sit on the bench.
Join us at 20.05 BST to see if Liverpool can overcome a 1-0 deficit to reach the Europa League final.
