After Extra Time
So, the Ukraine have their first ever UEFA Cup winners, while Werder must now concentrate on their domestic cup final against Bayer Leverkusen. Don't forget to join us for the big one next week; Manchester United v Barcelona in the Champions League final. Bye for now.
On the balance of play you have to say Shakhtar deserve it. They created more than their opponents and took their chances when it mattered. Werder gave it plenty of effort, but just lacked the cutting edge up front.
Its all over and Shakhtar Donetsk are the UEFA Cup winners 2009!
Boenisch gets booked for a spot of dissent and that should be that from this goal kick.
Werder's manager is on the pitch to retrieve the ball for his side but it looks like they're destined to be runners up.
Two minutes added...
Pizarro has the ball in the net again but the ref blows for a spot of pushing, quite rightly. Prodl won the header and Pizarro wrestled Chigrinsky out the way before the ball trickled in.
No way through for Werder as Prodl wins a header and Pyatov claims under no pressure at all.
Last chance saloon for Werder now. Expect the kitchen sink to be ordered up front imminently.
Tziolis is booked for nasty tackle on the rat.
Pizarro's neat control allows Tziolis a chance to find Hutn but Chigrinsky is there.
Naldo has another crack from distance and lucky for him it gets a nick and goes behind for a corner.
Luis Medina Cantalejo is having none of it when Prodl throws himself to the deck under the challenge of Srna.
Tziolis comes close with a rasping drive. It flashed a yard wide of the post with Pyatov beaten. Jadson is now off and Duljaj is on.
The pattern is set; deep lying Shakhtar defenders and plenty of white shirts pouring forward.
Now Jadson lies down for a rest. He pleads cramp but there's no sign of it and there was no-one within ten yards of him when he sank to the deck. Cheeky cheeky.
Boenisch makes a great run down the left but spoils it by shooting from a difficult angle.
We begin the last fifteen minutes of the UEFA Cup.
Willian has missed a chance to seal it! Lewandowski's ball wasn't meant for him but it found him onside behind the back four but his ship over Wiese is a fraction too high. HT in ET.
What a rubbish cross from Fernandinho.
Niemeyer is off and Tziolis comes on.
Decent move from Shakhtar, who have a bit more space to operate in now, but Gladkyy chooses the wrong option in backheeling when a shot or cross was required.
That's harsh on Wiese. He's had a good game but will feel he could have done much better with Jadson's strike.
Ilsinho is coming off and Olexiy Gai is on.
Werder were nearly level within a minute! Pyatov came out and punched a cross onto Naldo's head and as the ball looped up Pizarro's volley was saved well by the 'keeper. A bit of life in the game all of a sudden...
Fernandinho swings a ball out to the right, Srna slides in a cross and Jadson connects well but the 'keeper should have kept it out really. The ball limps over the line.
Fritz is off and Pasanen comes on.
The ball is floated over the top for Ozil but he can't bring it down properly in time to get a shot off and the ball hits Srna's midriff and trickles back to the keeper.
Srna has a pop and Wiese makes another good save, managing to parry away from the onrushing Gladkyy too.
The ref gets us back underway...
That's that and we have 30 extra minutes to come.
One minute left...
Fritz concedes a needless corner but Shakhtar can't profit from it. Gladkyy gets a whack on the head for his troubles too.
The ball is in the net but the flag is up. Niemeyer found Baumann but he was offside, rendering Pizarro's finish meaningless.
Adriano is off and Gladkyy is on.
Extra time looms unless.....
Naldo shoots from 50 yards, summing up the game's current malaise.
Ilsinho is booked now for pulling the shirt Boenisch.
Nice move from Shakhtar as Jadson and Adriano combine before Ilsinho is found inside the area but he can't eek a way past Prodl.
It's all gone a bit fouly now as Adriano wins a free kick from Fritz.
Luis Medina Cantalejo gets his book out again to card Fritz who left a leg in the air as Fernandinho looked to break.
Srna goes down after minimal contact in the box. He's stayed down for some reason too.
Pyatov redeems himself! Pizarro flicks on and the 'keeper saves low down before Kucher denies Hunt from the follow up.
Lewandowski is booked after hauling back Fritz.
Srna's corner goes all the way over the top and Jadson hits one right at Wiese.
Rat wins a corner.
A measure of how dull the game has become is clear by the excitement that greets a close-up of a meandering cat on the perimeter of the pitch. Snoooooze.
Boenisch gets away with a shove on Ilsinho. Clear foul that.
Fear seems to have taken over a little here with neither side prepared to chance their arm in search of goals.
Fernandinho risks a booking by giving Luis Medina Cantalejo an earful after Pizarro win a free kick.
After two superb crossfield balls in the last five minutes Srna disappoints with a rubbish free kick delivery.
Rat tries one from 30 yards but drags it wide, then Willian runs at Fritz again and gets a weak cross in. Shakhtar back on top now.
Now Fritz makes a decent challenge as Willian looks to go round him in the area.
Luiz Adriano nearly makes something out of nothing by nipping past Prodl but Naldo was across to block his shot.
Naldo brings down Frings' corner and lay it off to Ozil but he drags his left foot shot wide of the post.
Ilsinho brings down Frings with a stray leg.
A strange period of play where four fouls could have been given but aren't, much to the surprise of the players involved.
Luiz Adriano tries to track down a ball from Jadson but Wiese is out to claim.
Rosenberg has a pop on the turn when the better option was to lay off to Pizarro.
Srna gets booked for more histrionics after a little bump with Prodl. He argues about not getting a free kick, then gives Prodl a shove and is rightly carded. Drama queen.
Excellent low cross in from Srna after neat work from Ilsinho. None of his attacking brethren had taken a gamble on it though.
An awful strike from Frings; he hammers his effort into the ground and it rolls harmlessly wide.
Fernandinho bashes into Frings and Werder now have a free kick within range.
Rosenberg is penalised for taking a little climb on Rat when the misdemeanour was probably the other way round. Then Jadson hits a daisy cutter five yards wide of goal.
Decent save from Wiese as Jadson's effort curled towards the near post. A bit more pace on it and the 'keeper was beaten.
Free kick for Shakhtar after Luiz Adriano is fouled. Jadson is eyeing it up.
Srna whips in a free kick from the right but Wiese punches clear, then Willian hammers one across goal.
My colleague JC has just found a priceless picture of Pyatov seconds after he'd fumbled Naldo's free kick into his own net. Check it out on the home page soon...
An ice-hockey style bodycheck from Rat makes sure Willian has a free run down the left but a foul is rightly given. Our tele commentator beasts me to the line, "You dirty rat."
Let's hope the second half matches the first...
We begin again..
Great chance for Shakhtar! Willian chests down in the box and fires a shot across goal but Baumann does well to clear before Luiz Adriano can pot his second of the game. And that is half time!
Frings can only get better for the ex-German international (thank you) as he gets the games first booking for sliding into Lewandowski. No contact there though.
Niemeyer screams like a girl as Ilsinho clatters into him from behind, winning the ball in the process.
Pyatov is out to clear as Rosenberg marched onto a Frings through ball.
Cracking move from Shakhtar as Ilsinho and Jadson combine but Prodl hammers clear from the edge of his six yard box.
Brilliant save from Wiese! That's how you do it Pyatov! Lewandowski whacks in a howitzer but the keeper is equal to it, saving low down to his right.
Pyatov is having a right wobbly here! He comes for a cross and misses it, but fortunately for him Pizarro nods wide!
Fritz didn't and Srna clears.
Fritz now wins a corner for Werder and I suggest they stick one right under the bar and see what Pyatov is made of.
Well, he may be Ukraine's number one but that's not saying much. Pyatov will be kicking himself for that blunder. Possibly for ever if Werder go on to win.
Naldo has absolutely cracked that goalwards and Pyativ has tried to catch it for some unknown reason. The ball spills from his grasp and sails into the net. A terrible error. Game on!
Well, Adriano's up and back on and now Fernandinho clatters into Rosenberg and Werder have a free kick within range.
Luiz Adriano goes down awkwardly after challenging for a header. That looks nasty. Dislocated shoulder-tastic.
Now Niemeyer fires an aimless ball into the area looking for Rosenberg after Pizarro had worked hard down the right to keep the move alive.
Niemeyer has a pop from range but it was going well wide before Chigrinsky makes the block.
Willian looks a decent player. He was found down the left by Jadson, cut in on his weaker right foot and fired a shot at goal but it was straight at Wiese.
Luis Medina Cantalejo wanders over to have a word with Werder's coach Thomas Schaaf.
Luiz Adriano blazes one over the bar! Willian skips clear and the break is on, he gives it left to L.A. but he shuns a return ball in favour of an ambitious curler and the ball flies over.
Shakhtar just about deserve that on the balance of play but the goal came just as Werder had begun to assert themselves.
What a cute finish from Luiz Adriano after a long ball found its way to him. He was quickly onto it and flicked it over Wiese with the outside of his right boot. Great goal.
GOAL! Luiz Adriano!
Very poor ball from Niemeyer as Pizarro got half a yard on Lewandowski.
There may only be 12,000 fans of these teams in the staidum but they are making a right old racket. Maybe the Turkish fans are getting involved too.
The whistle goes for a push after Fritz's cross had reached Pizarro. The striker gave Srna a little nudge before the ball reached him though.
Srna is down after running into Niemeyer. He rather looked for that though.
Ilsinho makes a complete hash of his cross after Jadson released him down the right. Luiz Adriano was free in the middle if he'd nailed it.
Great tackle from Kucher as Ozil charged into the penalty area. The winger had cut in and latched onto a ball from Rosenberg but the right back recovered.
It's all gone a little bitty now, as Werder try to get a foothold in the game. Ozil swings in a cross but that man Rat is there. Then an off balance Fritz smacks one over the bar.
A decent spell for Werder now, who have probably realised that attack is the best form of defence against this fleet-footed Shakhtar side.
The wonderfully named Razvan Dinca Rat gives away a free kick now. Kucher went down under his tackle, so to speak.
Pizarro now gives away a free kick as Werder looked to relieve the pressure a little.
Willian now puts in a rather tasty challenge on Fritz and gets a stern warning from referee Luis Medina Cantalejo.
Ilsinho looks busy down this right hand side, with Srna giving good support. Willian is blocked off by Prodl and Shakhtar have a corner.
Pizarro wins a header from Frings' cross but Rosenberg can't get there ahead of Lewandowski.
This is shaping up very nicely indeed thank you as Shakhtar burst forward, Ilsinho releases Srna and his cross is intercepted at the vital moment by Ozil as Luiz Adriano's eyes lit up.
Chance for Werder now as Baumann volleys wide after Boenisch's throw in broke loose. Decent opening that...
Shakhtar's Brazilian axis showing what they can do early on...
What a chance! Luiz Adriano was found beautifully by Jadson who turned away from Baumann and he has blazed wide from just inside the area.
Naldo tidies up Prodl's mistake as Ilsinho attempted a slice of trickery down the right flank for Shakhtar.
Baumann charges down the right but just takes the ball out of play. Cagey opening so far...
Frings brings down Willian and Shakhtar have a free kick.
This is Shakhtar's first ever European final, Werder's last appearance was 17 years ago when they won the old Cup Winners Cup. The teams are in the tunnel. Thankfully, the stadium looks relatively full...
As for Werder, it'll be interesting to see if Claudio Pizarro is any good anymore (he's on loan from Chelsea) while Torsten Frings provides the steel. Werder's star player Diego is suspended tonight. Shame, for us and them.
So, players to keep an eye on; tricky Croatian wing-back Dario Srna and Jadson, who scored four goals and provided two assists in the group stages for the Champions League. Don't forget they beat Barcelona 3-2 at the Camp Nou two, though both clubs fate had been decided by that point.
Shakhtar Donetsk: Pyatov, Srna, Kucher, Chigrinsky, Rat, Lewandowski, Fernandinho, Ilsinho, Jadson, Willian and Luiz Adriano. Subs from: Khudzamov, Duljaj, Gai, Gladkyy, Ischenko,
Chyzhov and Moreno.
Werder Bremen: Wiese, Fritz, Prodl, Naldo, Boenisch, Niemeyer, Frings, Baumann, Ozil, Pizarro and Rosenberg. Subs from: Vander, Pasanen, Tosic, Vranjes, Hunt, Tziolis and Harnik.
How many fans actually turn up in Istanbul for the final is something of a worry. A total of only 12,000 fans from both clubs are said to have made the journey, due to money worries and the distance involved. A pretty poor show I say, credit crunch or not.
Good evening one and all and welcome to the glittering climax of Europe's footballing season as two giants of the game go head-to-head in Ro ... oh hang on, that's next week isn't it? Tonight is the last ever UEFA Cup final between Shakhtar Donetsk and Werder Bremen. That's right.
