Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Referee: Wolfgang Stark (GER)
Right, I'm off for a lie down. See you back here later on for the evening games.
Serbia and Australia can still go through, though the Aussies need a Germany defeat, or to win by about seven goals if they win. Here is our preview of that one.
Tonight's game will decide who England and the USA will face in the next round. If Germany beat Ghana they will finish top and book a last 16 clash with England. Here's our preview of the match.
Comment from Jayaditya Gupta at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium: There's an air of relief more than exultation but England had a much improved game. Things will get tougher from here on and they will have to raise their game even more to progress beyond the next round, whoever their opponents.
Well, now the dust has settled a little, let's reflect on a much improved England performance. They should have won by three or four, and if they had, they would be topping the group and facing a much easier route to the final. Once the euphoria of getting through has died off, that will stay with them.
"The mind of the players now is free and clear of doubt," says Capello. Full time in the USA game and they win the group. Joy unconfined for them. Takes the edge off for England.
England are celebrating like they've just slain Brazil, not Slovenia, with a population of two million. All eyes will switch to Group D tonight now to see who England will face on Sunday afternoon.
Wow. That makes things totally different. England will face the winners of Group D if the USA hold on. One minute left.
Unbelievable! England hang on and celebrate but they will finish second in the group because Donovan has scored an injury time winner! Incredible!
Slovenia win a free-kick and this will be their last chance.
Cole wins a corner. Four extra minutes in the USA game. They can still win the group if they score!
One minute to hold on...
To say the USA Algeria game is stretched is an understatement. Milner wins another foul. England are camped in the corner.
Lampard wins a free-kick and England are in no hurry at all.
Three minutes added...
Joe Cole boots the ball out of play and this really is too much to bear now. Matthew Upson has saved us! The ball fell to Dedic who was about to shoot and Upson made a VITAL intervention.
There's a piece of pinball in the box before Gerrard hacks clear. Then as Slovenia pump it forward James comes out to claim. This group is on a knife edge. Horrible stuff to watch as an England fan.
Johnson gives away a free-kick and Slovenia can lump it in the box from the right touchline.
Gerrard's low cross forces Jovic to concede a corner.
Gerrard turns the ball on for Joe Cole and he has a blast but the angle was against him and he should have held onto it. USA pouring forward in the other game.
Birsa's corner is awful but Brecko's shot from distance was even worse. England will take that all day long.
Heskey is coming on for Defoe. Good shift from the Spurs striker.
Birsa's delivery is again terrible but Slovenia regroup. Corner. Help.
Joe Cole gives away a free-kick. Slovenia load the box.
Suler comes through the back of Defoe and England have a free-kick. A bit fortunate. My the tension is palpable, and that's just in the office.
Joe Cole's long ball for Defoe is poor. Slovenia regain possession.
There are gaps for England to exploit if they can play this right. Slovenia are still going through as it stands but they are edging forward more and more.
. Lampard redeems himself after a loose ball forward by winning a free-kick off Dedic. Tiredness is kicking in. Dedic is carded
James comes out as Koren's ball for Dedic trundles on.
Birsa gets carded for kicking the ball away after England were awarded a free-kick.
Kirm comes off and Matavz is on, another striker.
Joe Cole tries to slide a cute ball into Ashley Cole but the left-back can't reach it.
Good football from England to get out of trouble in their own half.
England have lost momentum since Joe Cole has come on. He and Defoe haven't linked up yet. Get Lennon on for his pace I say.
Milner looks tired as he spins in a lacklustre cross. We are officially into squeaky bum time.
Cole and Milner interchange.
Lampard wins the ball fairly but is penalised. Wolfgang Stark is having a shocker.
No tantrum from Rooney though and he was limping earlier. Cole will play off Defoe.
Joe Cole gets a roar as he comes on but it is Rooney who is making way. He doesn't look chuffed.
John Terry defends stoutly.
Joe Cole is stripped and ready to come on. Interesting.
Birsa's delivery has been poor. He goes for goal again from distance and James can watch it wide.
ESPN Stats & Info: Wayne Rooney has been denied by the woodwork eight times in his England career.
Milner twists Jokic twice but his cross is too close to Handanovic.
That was all Barry's fault for trying a needless flick in possession. Still 0-0 in the other game but a USA goal will put them top of the group.
Astonishing! Slovenia break and then have three chances to score but first Terry, then Johnson make vital blocks before Birsa smashes wide. England on the ropes there.
Barry gives it away needlessly and Slovenia break again. He's had a poor two minutes the City man.
Rooney is limping.
Barry is a lucky boy as he hands the ball on a plate to Birsa. His effort is poor by his standards.
England have been so dominant in this half they need a second. The longer the half goes on, the more they will sit back and the more likely it is Slovenia will pinch one.
Stat Attack: It is almost three years since England led at half-time and failed to win the game (v Russia Sep 2007). Destiny.
Gerrard's free-kick is met by Rooney but it hits Suler and goes behind for a corner.
Milner is clipped by Jokic and he then gives the ref an earful. He's been booked remember. He's on a knife edge here.
Ljubijankic is coming off and Zltako Dedic is on.
Dempsey has hit the post now for the USA. They are peppering Algeria now.
Wayne Rooney sticks out a leg.
The replay of that Rooney chance shows that Handanovic got a sliver of a finger on that and has made an absolutely top class save. Brilliant from the 'keeper.
England have to score in this spell; they are absolutely on top. Rooney hangs his head after that chance.
Now Handanovic comes too far for the corner but Terry can't finish it, then Rooney is clean through from Lamaprd's ball but hits the post!
Terry meets Barry's deep corner and only a fine reaction save from Handanovic prevents number two.
Super ball from Gerrard - he's up for this, but possession is wasted by Johnson. Then Milner wins a corner. It's a seesaw game at the minute.
Samir Handanovic makes a save for Slovenia.
Gerrard's wayward pass forces Barry to bring down big Ljubijankic. Another Slovenia free-kick.
Gerrard nicks the ball away from Brecko and plays a one-two with Rooney but he can't get the shot off. Should have made more of that England.
Danger here. Birsa over it. Thankfully he goes for glory and James catches it.
England give away two nothing free-kicks in 30 seconds and Slovenia can get the ball into the box from the right.
Johnson crosses with his left foot and though Rooney was up early he couldn't quite grow enough to meet it. Ooh this is tense.
A superb ball in from Birsa is claimed well by James. Novakovic was a whisker away from connecting with that.
Defoe has the ball in the net again but Rooney, who crossed it for him, has been flagged offisde. The right decision. Just.
Now Johnson is carded for diving when he has been elbowed in the face. A truly awful decision from the German referee.
Oh my that should have been the match. Defoe was clearly onside and it was a far easier chance than the one he snaffled.
An early corner for England after a shanked pass from Slovenia and as Rooney takes it quickly and the ball falls to Defoe, he has flicked it wide from seven yards. That could have been the perfect start.
We begin again. Strap yourself in....
ESPN Stats & Info: England have 15 wins, 1 loss, and four draws when leading at half-time. Their only loss came in 1970 against West Germany (3-2 ET).
Frank Lampard battles for the ball.
Comment from Jayaditya Gupta at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium: England have bossed the half and are good value for their lead but it should have been more. Their bright passing before the goal has been replaced by a series of long balls, which Heskey or Crouch is better equipped to deal with.
It is half-time in the USA game and they are still goalless with Algeria. As it stands both England and Slovenia are going through but a goal in either game could change that.
Comment from John Brewin: Better, much better but there are still skeletons in England's cupboard. Whither, Wayne Rooney? Something still not quite right there.
So, England have improved beyond measure here. Defoe and Milner hardly contributed anything before the goal, but after they were heavily involved. Milner's delivery has been excellent and Defoe looks very sharp.
HALF-TIME Much better from England and they should really lead by more than one goal. There is still a long way to go though, fear not.
Defoe is cleaned up totally by Cesar but the ref doesn't give a free-kick. That was a foul all day long. Very poor officiating.
Jermain Defoe celebrates his goal
Slovenia's free-kick from the centre-circle takes a deflection meaning James has to punch clear. The flag was up anyway. The 'keeper did well.
ESPN Stats & Info: England have had twice as many touches in the box (eight) as Slovenia (four).
Jermain Defoe scores England's goal
Jokic sends Johnson flying and gets the first card of the afternoon.
Lampard's poor ball nearly lets Novakovic in but Terry tidies up. Still the odd shaky touch or pass flying about.
Upson's touch is heavy and he has to bust a lung to get there and clear.
Jozy Altidore has just missed an absolute sitter for the US. He's blazed over from five yards with only one defender to beat.
Another fabulous Milner ball drops to the back stick where Brecko chests behind very, very well. Corner.
The free-kick was poor and Cole clears. Rooney narrowly misses out on claiming it ahead of Jokic.
Cole barges into Brecko and Slovenia win a soft free-kick on the right flank.
Gerrard is penalised for handball on the left. Slovenia the ones trying to press forward and open things up now.
You get the feeling England need to make this advantage count. Slovenia won't be this bad after the break.
ESPN Stats & Info: Jermaine Defoe's last goal for England was also against Slovenia on September 5, 2009.
Unbelievable! Defoe whacks one on goal and the 'keeper parries, then Rooney feeds Gerrard who tries for the far corner but Handanovic saves again. Then just when it looks like the ball may squirm over the line he is up to punce.
That has calmed the fans too, who are in fine voice. England can do them even more good with a second before half time.
ESPN Stats & Info: James Milner has 25 touches so far, including the cross on Defoe's goal. In his opening match against the United States, he registered two touches in total.
Comment from John Brewin: At Soccer City, there is a difference of emotion. The Americans are furious they have had a goal chalked off. Relief among the British contingent - proud Scot Derek Rae is supporting England. We can hear singing too. The horns are silenced.
Another brilliant ball in from Milner forces Handanovic to parry and as it breaks to Lampard he blazes over. Poor effort.
Kirm's cross from the left is too long for Novakovic. England need a calm ten minutes here.
Terry nips in well and the referee gives him a foul, but England wanted to play on because Milner was away on the break.
That was Milner's first real ball of quality and Defoe's first sniff of the match but he has tucked it away beautifully. Slovenia have to press now.
GOAL Defoe! Milner's brilliant cross is met by Defoe on the volley and the 'keeper can't keep it out. Superb.
Now David James is called into action as Kirm fires in a powerful shot. Good stop.
John Terry makes a vital block as Koren got into the area. First real chance for Slovenia.
Johnson has a pop with his left foot and the 'keeper holds well because the ball bounced up in front of him.
Jermain Defoe battles away.
Terry meets Barry's corner at the near post but his flick is past the post. Bizarrley, the ref says corner.
Upson finds himself on the box edge and the ball falls to Rooney. His shot is deflected behind for a corner.
Gerrard's cross field pass is wasted by Milner and Slovenia try to counter. But for a sloppy pass they would have been away.
Super play from England as Cole cuts inside and feeds Rooney whose ball into the area for Lampard is a tad too strong. Much, much better.
Lampard's effort is on target and swerving but Handanovic catches it well on the dive.
Rooney wins a free-kick off Radosavlijevic and Lampard is over it. 40 yards out.
Stat Attack: Slovenia have the best shooting accuracy and the best chance conversion rates at the 2010 World Cup.
Slovenia knock the ball out as Radosavlijevic went down but he was up by the time the ball crossed the line. England give it back.
Barry rushses a pass and knocks it out of play. England lacking patience in possession.
The corner is cleared then Slovenia break. Johnson tackles. That pass of his was quality and Rooney looked bright when cutting inside to cross.
A superb ball from Johnson releases Rooney and his cross is nodded behind for a corner.
Barry thumps into the back of Radosavlijevic and is lucky not to get a card. Poor challenge.
Brecko charges down the right but Cole makes an important challenge. Slovenia starting to bare their teeth.
A decent break from Slovenia as Birsa cuts in and shoots but James takes the ball well on the bounce.
A terrible ball from Terry nearly lets Slovenia in. England look nervy again. Algeria have just hit the bar.
Still a lack of options for England as they try to break down Slovenia. They get stuck in possession. Algeria all over again.
Johnson chops down Kirm and the ref tells him one more and he'll go in the book.
Brighter from England as Defoe battles for the ball and Milner's early cross is cleared.
Indecision at the back as Johnson miscontrols a looping ball, then Gerrard and Terry get in each other's way as they try to clear a throw-in.
Gerrard has started on the left and Milner on the right. It's as you were for England, which is a worry.
90 minutes to save your World Cup dream England. Off you go....
God Save the Queen is belted out lustily, especially by the players...
Weather watch in Port Elizabeth: 19 degrees and sunny with a light south-westerly wind. Just perfect for football. There have been worries about the pitch, and it looks a bit patchy.
ESPN Stats & Info: England haven't failed to score in back-to-back games since spring 2007.
Here come the teams. Hold onto your hats....
The USA fans get into the mood
Comment from Jayaditya Gupta at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium: I think the real losers tonight will be the vuvuzelas. They don't stand a chance against good old vocal chords.
A draw is enough for Slovenia to go through, and if Algeria win and Slovenia lose then the African side can go through.
Comment from Jayaditya Gupta at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium: A relatively warm afternoon here in PE. England have gone with two up front but where's the gamechanger? They need Joe Cole to offer them a Route B.
My colleague Tom Adams is covering the USA v Algeria game and you can follow that one here, should you wish.
The situation in the group is thus: If England win, they are through. If the USA beat Algeria, they are also through. Where it gets messy is if both teams draw. Basically, to qualify with a draw England must score three goals more than the US. If they draw by scoring two goals more we draw lots.
As for Slovenia, their captain Robert Koren is sure they deliver a knockout blow to England.
To whet your appetite, why not have a read of Fabio Capello's insistence that John Terry is still a big part of the England team.
According to the tele, Gerrard is going to play just behind the front two, with Lampard on the left side of a midfield diamond. Not entirely sure about that, and I must say I'm worried that the removal of Lennon has stripped the pace out of our team.
As for Slovenia, they name the same line-up that started against the USA. Novakovic and Ljubijankic begin up front, and Valter Birsa will provide the bullets. England beware.
England make three changes to their team that faced Algeria. Out go Jamie Carragher (suspended) Emile Heskey (about time) and Aaron Lennon (big error) and in come Matthew Upson (shaky) Jermain Defoe (not convinced) and James Milner (solid). Fabio sticks with 4-4-2 and ignores JT's plea to play Joe Cole.
Right, here we go. Welcome to 90 minutes of stomach-churning, pant-wetting, nail-biting drama. If you're an England fan like me that is. The rest of the footy-loving world are probably salivating at the prospect of our demise.
Join us at 1400 GMT to see if England can qualify from the group by beating the surprise package of Slovenia.
