Referee: Koman Coulibaly
Later, England take on Algeria, and to whet your appetite, here's our preview.
Michael Bradley celebrates his equalising goal
Here's our match report, hot off the press.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: The game is over but the remonstrations begin from the Americans. They believe they have been robbed. Who could argue? Will FIFA ask the ref to explain? Likely not, and so, the future of both teams hangs in the balance.
Slovenia go top of the pile with four points from two games. The USA are second on two points from two games. England are third, with one point from one game, and Algeria are bottom with no points after one game.
FULL TIME A cracking game and probably a deserved result given the balance of play, but the US will feel hard done by after Edu's goal was disallowed.
Once we resume there should be about 20 seconds left to play. Pecnik leaves on a stretcher. He's in real trouble. Komac comes on for him.
Dempsey and Pecnik are down after a coming together. That looked like a knee twist for the Slovenian. He's in pain and a stretcher is on.
A vital intervention from Bocanegra as Dedic looked to steal in.
I've seen about ten replays of the disallowed goal now and I still can't pinpoint the foul the referee saw. If anything, threee Slovenians were holding onto three US players.
Koren is penalised for handball as DeMerit whacked the ball at him. Three minutes added...
Radosavljevic has a pop at goal and Howard fists away. A late rally from Slovenia. They win a corner.
A rare spell of possession for Slovenia ends with a header on goal but a regulation save from Tim Howard.
A USA fan shows his delight
That decision must have been for a foul, looking at the replay. But how he decided to penallise the US rather than Slovenia I'll never know.
Disallowed! Maurice Edu's goal from the cross has been flagged offside but he is about four yards ON. Unbelievable decision.
Now Altidore buys a free-kick off Cesar and the US can load the box.
Jubilant celebrations followed, and Bradley snr immediately changes his back three to a back four. I think he should have charged on to try and win it.
I can't stress how good a finish that is. Altidore's flick was bouncing high and Bradley has poked it into the roof of the net with his studs. Top quality.
GOAL! The US are level! It's the boss's son too! Bradley prods home after Altidore's knock down and we have eight minutes to find a winner.
Bradley collects a neat ball from Feilhaber and looks for the far corner but his shot lacks pace and Handanovic saves no bother.
Onyewu comes off and Gomez is on. A defender for a striker.
That's no good for the US as Onyewu lumps a ball past Altidore. The big man needs it to feet.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: This referee is card happy to say the least and it's the Americans who are staging the play-acting to win his favour. Nervy times in the Alpine state of Slovenia.
A stupid cameo from Novakovic, who gives away possession then dives ridiculously in a bid to win a foul. Clown.
Slovenia playing purely on the break now and sitting deeper and deeper.
Jokic is the latest to go in the book for a barge on Donovan.
The ref doesn't like any crowd scenes in the area. That long throw fell to ground, bodies went everywhere and then Dempsey poked it wide. The whistle had gone though.
Slovenia make a change. Pecnik is on for Ljubijankic, who has had a good game.
Altidore is throwing his weight around now and is causing problems for Slovenia's back line.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: The Americans claim that should have been a red card for Suler. Not so sure. Did he really deny a goalscoring opportunity?
Kirm gets a card for a nasty challenge on Cherundolo.
Straight down the other end and Ljubijankic swings in a neat ball but it is just over the head of Novakovic.
Donovan blasted it, the ball fell to Altidore but his snapshot is right at Handanovic. A yard either side and it was in.
The free-kick is right on the edge of the box, out to the right corner of the area.
A yellow for Suler as he and Altidore ran for a ball down the line. He was the last man but they were heading away from goal so that is the right call.
Great teamwork from Slovenia there, harrying the man in possession and forcing a mistake from Onyewu. They hunt in packs and have boundless energy. For now.
Novakovic puts in a decent ball but Ljubijankic was the only one in the box and he got nowhere near it.
Feilhaber tries a weak shot with his left foot that dribbles apologetically past the post. You could see the dollar signs light up in his eyes.
Jokic turns in a ball for Ljubijankic but Howard is out to cliam comfortably. Then Koren misplaces a pass and Edu can bring the ball forward.
Slovenia are taking their time over everything now and the USA are stating to get a bit agitated by it.
Howard punches as Birsa hammers it in.
Slovenia free-kick now on the left.
Landon Donovan pulls a goal back for USA.
Kirm took a knock from Altidore but he's up and about and we are underway again.
A free-kick for the US, wide on the right. Donovan over it but the flag is up for a foul by Altidore.
Altidore looks for a second as if he is in but a superb saving tackle from Suler stops him in his tracks. Yelps from the US contingent in Soccernet towers.
Dempsey, Altidore and Donovan are the front three now and they are worrying Slovenia.
The break looks to be on for the US before Brecker intervenes and then Slovenia charge away on the counter. Ljubijankic is crowded out by DeMerit and Onyewu.
Great tackle from DeMerit as Ljubijankic marauds down the left.
Radosavljevic rathers slows a decent looking Slovenian break by knocking a simple ball too far wide for Novakovic.
Jokic turns a free-kick into the US area now and Howard parries behind for a corner.
Now Dempsey's ball is very nearly turned home at the far post by Onyewu. The flag was up in any case.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: Wonderful finish from Landon Donovan but you have to say the Slovene keeper looked to duck out of it. Perhaps he's worried about his looks. Perhaps he should be now.
A perfect start for the US and smart play from Donovan. As he took the ball in towards goal he was at an angle, but due to lack of support in the middle he turned his sights on goal and wellied it in.
GOAL! Donovan strikes! Cesar tried to nick the ball from him and as Donovan neared the byline he thought he may as well crack it and he did, right into the roof of the net. Superb hit.
A good run from Donovan who pulls a back back into the area and Cesar hacks clear. A bright start from the US.
Maurice Edu and Benny Feilhaber are on for the US. Torres and Findley go off. We begin again.
Slovenia's Zlatan Ljubijankic slots their second goal.
Slovenia's Zlatan Ljubijankic celebrates scoring his side's second goal.
Later, England take on Algeria, attempting to keep pace with (current) runaway leaders Slovenia. Here's our preview.
Today's early kick-off saw Serbia edge past Germany. There was controversy though. Have a read of the match report here.
To clear that one up, Ljubijankic was level for the second goal. Onyewu was two yards behind his defensive colleagues and has to take the blame.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: The Slovenia manager is not satisfied with that even. He went to have a real go at the Malian referee about some perceived injustice. Some talk of the second being offside but it was marginal at worst. "Move On Up" pumps out the PA. That could the Slovenian theme tune.
Slovenia have scored two superb goals, Birsa's rocket into the top corner and then a lovely passing move ending with a cool slot from Ljubijankic. Good on them.
Half-time. The US have a mountain to climb. Bob Bradley has some big decisions to make at the break. Slovenia have been excellent, and but for a five-minute spell, they dominated that half.
Slovenia will just play this cute now and allow the US to come onto them. Remember, if they win, they are through. Two minutes added at the end of this opening half...
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: That was a very close call and came against the run of play but you have to commend the cool finish from Ljubijankic. Wonderful celebration too.
Ellis Park, choc full of US fans, has fallen silent. A killer blow. Onyewu displaying the sort of defending we saw in patches when he was on loan at Newcastle a few years back.
GOAL! A superb move ends with Novakovic finding Ljubijankic and he slips it under Tim Howard. A disaster for the US.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: USA on a real surge now but you have to say Slovenia's last-ditch defending has been excellent.
What a clearance! Findley feeds Dempsey and his cross is right on the goalline before Brecko clears off the toes of Donovan. Superb defending.
A melee ensues from the corner and the referee gives a free-kick to Slovenia. He's also booked Findley. Not sure why. The ball hit him in the face.
A poor choice from Findley when the US had a great opening. He was looking for Altidore but the ball was behind him and suler clears for a corner.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: Great goalkeeping from Handanovic, he must have realised where that was going very late.
The corner was cleared to the edge of the box and Jay DeMerit meets it with a firm header on the edge of the box and it very nearly creeps over the 'keeper.
Cracking effort from Torres, who hits one towards the near post, forcing Handanovic into a good save. Corner.
Free-kick for the US on the right flank. Donovan over it.
Altidore does well to sneak past Cesar and we have the game's first yellow card.
Findley can't reach a poor ball towards him from Torres. The US look a bit rattled here.
If the commentator is already speculating on lookalikes within half an hour you can be sure the game isn't up to all that much. I could do with a nice Chianti actually.
Our commentator has just said: "Bob Bradley has always reminded me of Hannibal Lector." Not sure Bob will be too chuffed.
Onyewu and Ljubijankic take a tubmle chasing a long ball. Got away with that one did the defender. Clumsy.
Stat attack: ''10 of the last 12 goals USA have conceded at the World Cup have been netted in the first half.''
Birsa's delilvery is good again as the ball ricochets loose. Howard rushes out and boots clear.
A good ball in from Donovan is met by Dempsey but there was a push in there. The US's two best players combine.
Now Novakovic shouts at Kirm for delaying a pass into the area. The offside flag went up sharpish.
Koren dribbles down the left and attempts a cross but it sails behind. Had a good year with West Brom but has been released this summer.
Slovenia win a fortunate corner but Cherundolo nods clear.
A great tackle from Bradley sets the US away but Torres' block tackle hands possession back to SLovenia.
Slovenia celebrate Valter Birsa's opening goal.
Birsa has another pop from the free-kick and Howard catches at the back stick. Down the other end a clearing header from Jokic prevents danger.
Brisa does well to draw a foul from Bocanegra. If he hadn't the USA were away on the break.
Altidore having to drop very deep to get the ball. He links with Donovan who dribbles to the edge of the area beforte Brecker tidies up.
Torres is clipped by Koren and the US have a free-kick in the centre circle.
Slovenia look tidy in possession here. Nice and compact too.
Bradley lets fly from distance but that ended up more like a field goal.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: US fans desolate after what was a carve-up of their de-fense and it's the Slovenian horns that are sounding.
Brecko gets into the area and Onyewu has to be quick to cut out his pass to Koren. Good game now.
A flying punch from Handanovic clears the danger from Slovenia's area after Donovan's free-kick.
That brilliant goal sparked pandemonium on the Slovenia bench. What a hit. That lad has got a cultured left foot, and for the second time at this World Cup, the USA find themselves behind early on.
GOAL! Birsa picks the ball up and from 25 yards curls it into the top corner past a static Tim Howard.
Altidore bursts into life and tries to feed Dempsey but the Fulham man can't grab hold of the ball.
For those of you interested in the weather, it is currently 12 degrees and sunny, with a light westerly breeze. It'll hit -1 overnight apparently.
A faint shout for handball against Onyewu as Novakovic flicked the ball into the area. Would have been extremely harsh.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: Slovenia are clearly not here to be rolled over by Uncle Sam. And Team USA have to chase a win. I predict gaps at the back.
Great early ball into the box from Birsa and Novakovic is there in front of his man but fails to make contact.
I think we are looking a war of attrition here, people. Brace yourself.
A free-kick is whipped in from the left and though Ljubijankic climbs to meet it his header flies over the bar.
A cracking ball from Bradley releases Findley but he is tackled by Suler. USA corner.
A paper aeroplane lands on the pitch. Shame it wasn't a vuvuzela, then FIFA would have a reason to ban them. I joke of course. Love them.
A scrappy start to the game, and a niggly tone set by that opening minute free for all.
Comment from John Brewin at Ellis Park: The American fans have gone a bundle on the vuvuzuelas and were whooping it up pre-match. Again, plenty of empty seats. Particularly in the exec area.
Dempsey's eyes were on the ball but he did smash a forearm in the striker's face. No cards from the referee.
Straight away we have a rumble as Dempsey connected with an elbow on Ljubijankic. Slovenia's players went nuts and shoving ensued.
The anthems are belted out with predictable gusto and we are all set.
Those population stats are replicated in the stands. There are far more US fans in the ground than Slovenians. As you'd expect probably. I wonder how many Americans choose Slovenia as a holiday destination?
Slovenia's population of two million, is less than a third of Johannesburg's would you believe. The US? 307 million.
"We're in a very good place right now and confident that Slovenia are a team we can beat," says Landon Donovan. I wonder how the US will cope being favourites for this game, as opposed to the underdogs against England. Can they force the pace?
Slovenia can go through with a win today, but this will be a decidedly trickier encounter than their last with Algeria. That game must rank as one of the tournament's worst so far. Maybe even in its entire history. This will be better though, I have no hesitation in predicting.
As for Slovenia, they make one change to the side that beat Algeria as Zlatko Dedic is replaced up front by Zlatan Ljubijankic.
One change from the USA team that drew with England. Jose Torres comes into the left of midfield at the expense of Ricardo Clark.
Welcome along to live coverage of Slovenia's clash with the USA from Ellis Park in Johannesburg. Slovenia won their opening game against Algeria while the USA took a creditable point against England. We're all set for a cracker.
