Referee: Luis Medina Cantalejo
Not a bad game but surely United will be kicking themselves for not capitlising on an excellent first 45 minutes. Inter will be thankful not to have conceded, but disappointed they couldn't create more. See you next time.
Ronaldo whacks it goalwards and the ball smashes into Cesar's chest - the 'keeper knew very little about it in truth but he's had an excellent game. As soon as the ball hit him the whistle went and the game stays goalless.
Ronaldo wins a last ditch free-kick well within his range after a Cordoba tackle. The defender gets carded and Ronaldo will take his time to line this one up. Its 25 yards out, to the left of the D....
Rooney goes down under a Chivu challenge and Ronaldo takes the free-kick quick as a flash but Berbatov couldn't pounce on it.
Stankovic cuts in and has a punt as United squeezed into down the middle but his effort was always rising.
Chivu marches forward and hits one but the ball is deflected into Van der Sar's arms.
Now Rooney tries to scamper onto a Carrick ball but Cesar makes a crucial intervention with his leg.
Rooney's first involvement is to overrun the ball and pile in with a strong but ball winning challenge on Zanetti and get a completely undeserved yellow card. A truly awful decision from the ref that.
More sterling work from Stankovic who delivers an excellent cross from the right. Evans meets it with a superb clearing header.
Ibrahimovic hammers it goalwards and a deflection off Evans takes it wide. Goal kick given though.
The earlier corner was met by Ibrahimovic and Cambiasso at the far post didn't have enough time to get his head to the ball and score a certain goal. Free kick for Inter now, in a dangerous position.
Wayne Rooney comes on for Park Ji-Sung.
The corner bobbled around the goalmouth before Van der Sar claimed. Hard to see exactly what happened actually. Another let off for United though.
Great play from Inter down the right, Maicon works hard but Evra blocks his cross then Stankovic picks up the pieces with a wonderful volleyed cross and Ibrahimovic rises to head off target but out for a corner.
Wayne Rooney is getting ready for ten minutes of action. He could be the difference here you know.
Santon gets himself in trouble with Ronaldo hovering and Carrick wins a corner off Cordoba.
Inter have gone three up top now with Cruz, Ibrahimovic and Belatolli. Jose wants a goal in the last 13 or so minutes.
Right from the restart Berbatov has a chance but after he got round the outside of Cordoba he couldn't pull the ball back across goal with his left foot and hit the side netting instead.
Changes for Inter; Blotelli replaces Adriano and Muntari makes way for Julio Cruz.
Scrap that - great work from Giggs who found space and cut inside Cordoba, but the defender got a great block in to prevent Giggs' shot troubling Cesar.
Ronaldo finds Gigga but his right footed cross is behind Park and miles away from Berbatov. Time for Rooney methinks.
Barcelona are level with Lyon thanks to Henry and Lisandro Lopez has just made it Atletico 2-2 Porto.
Muntari spreads play for Cambiasso and somehow his low cross gets to Adriano's feet but he can't turn to be able to get a shot off and Evans hacks away.
Fletcher mistimes a challenge on Muntari and gets a yellow for his trouble.
Fletcher finds Giggs early but his ball for Berbatov was hit far too hard. The striker was in if Giggs got that right.
Maicon's delivery is very poor - his cross troubles no-one but the ball boy behind the goal.
Ibrahimovic wins a free kick after getting a hug from O'Shea. It's left of centre and about 30 yards out.
A poor corner from Giggs and Inter clear, but before that a sign that United are starting to find their feet again as Ronaldo slid in a brilliant and inviting cross.
Great one two between O'Shea and Ronaldo - the latter charges into the box and clips a delicious ball across the face of goal but Park can't reach it. Corner.
Decent work from Inter again as Muntari, Adriano and Adriano combine to allow Santon to cross for Ibrahimovic, but he got his header all wrong.
Adriano finds a yard on Ferdinand on the wing but Ibrahimovic is nowhere to be seen from the cross. Then Stankovic clips Evra and United have a free kick.
Ronaldo runs at Muntari and goes down theatrically but the ref waves him up. Quite rightly too. No need for him to fling himself to the floor there at all.
Fletcher looks for Berbatov over the top but the Bulgarian is flagged offside.
It's testament to Inter's revitalisation that Ronaldo's touch just then must rank as practically his first this half.
Maicon is booked for a late challenge on Carrick now. It looked a little innocuous, but was completely unnecessary.
Stankovic is having an excellent second half, displaying the urgency and willing his team mates were lacking in the first half. He bursts down the right again but can't find a team mate with his cross.
Now Chivu becomes the first player who is actually playing to get carded after piling in from behind on Berbatov.
Now Ibrahimovic is flagged offside after a superb crossfield ball from Stankovic. Oooh, he was level as well. Shame for Inter.
Van der Sar got a nudge as he fumbled the corner. A little fortunate perhaps.
Ibrahimovic diddles O'Shea but his attempted cross is poor. He still wins a corner though.
Park is on the ball again but his cross is too strong for any red shirt to reach.
United force their first attacking move of the second period as Evra drives in a low cross but Chivu is there ahead of Park.
Stankovic is the latest to have a pop after Fletcher intercepted Adriano's pass. The crowd are up for this now. Jose has earned his corn during the break.
Adriano had just edged in front of Ferdinand but although there was a hand on his shoulder, there wasn't enough force with it to warrant a penalty. A wicked cross from Maicon though, and Inter are transformed.
What a start from Inter! Already they've had more threat about them in three second half minutes than in the entire 45 of the first. Maicon crosses this time and Adriano claims a foul from Ferdinand. Nothing given and rightly so.
Cambiasso and Stankovic combine down the left and as the former swings a cross in Adriano miskicks from 12 yards out when afforded space for a shot. Their best chance by a mile.
We begin again, no doubt with a few fleas in the ears of Inter's players. Rivas is off and Cordoba is on. Rightfully so, Rivas had a mare in the opening 45.
Cambiasso swings it in and Carrick heads clear. Then Zanetti breaks up a Manchester United counter and the ref blows for half time. Inter will be much the happier for the break. They should be plenty ahead. See you in 15 minutes.
Santon charges down the left after a nice ball from Muntari and tries to unload a shot as he cuts in - Evans blocks well. Now Maicon wins a free kick on the right.
Now Muntari is down. It's all happening...
The referee heads over to the Inter bench and shows a yellow to sunstitute Francesco Toldo, who vociferously complained at his award of a free kick to Park Ji-Sung. Jose was in there trying to play peacemaker of course.
Park scampers down the left and turns in a cross for Berbatov, but though he beat Chivu to the header it lacked the power and direction (so pretty much everything, then) to trouble Cesar.
Giggs battles hard against Santon (big age gap there eh?) and wins a corner. Cesar flies out to punch clear..
Ibrahimovic works a bit of space on the left and spins in a cross but Van der Sar collects well at the near post as it bounced dangerously.
Carrick's delightful ball finds Ronaldo galloping down the right but he delays his cross and Cesar grabs it when he finally hammers it in to the near post. Should have done better.
Arsenal are one up against Roma at the Emirates through a Van Persie penalty.
Ibrahimovic flashes in a cross and Stankovic tries to back heel a ball travelling at speed into the net from 16 yards. Silly.
Ibrahimovic wins a free kick from Ferdinand to remind us he's still playing. He and Adriano have provided next to nothing so far..
Nice work from Maicon down the right allows him a chance to cross. But despite a nice clip into the box Ferdinand is up to clear.
Ronaldo hits the wall and as United try to regroup Berbatov tumbles into Santon and gives Inter a bit of respite. Jose is winding up the hair dryer for half-time I reckon..
Perhaps reflecting their side's performance, the San Siro crowd are deathly silent. You can even hear the travelling fans at the minute. Now Rivas clips Berbatov and Ronaldo can have yet another go from 25 yards...
Then Ronaldo should have scored! Fletcher floats in the ball and Ronaldo flicks a header wide of the post with Cesar beaten. How are Manchester United still on nil?!
Ronaldo's dipping effort career's toward the near post but Cesar is down to parry away.
This is a mismatch at the moment. Inter are flailing at the back and not fluid at all in possession. Chivu gives away another free kick within range as he clips Ronaldo.
Giggs rolls Rivas and is through on goal but at an angle on the left. He goes for power and Cesar saves but he would have been better crossing for weither Berbatov or Park. Real chance wasted.
Fletcher could have been in there had he collected O'Shea's ball cleanly. But he didn't and he wasn't.
Rio Ferdinand has had a shaky game so far. After an up and under from Muntari he chose not to nod back to his 'keeper and instead nodded the ball right into the path of Ibrahimovic, but the Swede couldn't get past Evans with his effort.
Giggs corner sees several red shirt find space but Rivas is there first, then as Evra turns the ball back in Berbatov powers a header into the ground - and wide.
Ronaldo crosses and the ball hits Giggs but had he turned the right way after it struck him he'd have had a tap in. As it is, he has a corner.
Park and Fletcher combine but Giggs' flick for Ronaldo is weak, then the Portuguese winger gives the ball away which provokes another chorus of applause from the majority of the San Siro.
Then Inter race down the other end and fashion space for Zanetti but his back post cross is overhit and goes behind.
A right scramble ensues in Inter's box after Berbatov got round the back. He tried to centre for Park but his ball was poor and Santon can force the ball clear.
Ferdinand and Van der Sar get a little mixed up inside their own area but eventually get the ball away to safety.
Carrick fires in a ball to Berbatov who flicks inside the area for Park, but Rivas gets in his way cleverly. At the other end Ibrahimovic smacks a shot out for a throw in. Yes, a throw in.
Another roar from the home crowd as first Ronaldo tries to dribble his way out of trouble deep in his own half before Ferdinand is put under pressure by Adriano and can only stab the ball out of play.
Arsenal have made an excellent start against Roma but haven't made the breakthrough yet. Ususal story then...
Giggs went for the element of surprise as everyone expected another Ronaldo blast but his curler hit the wall and Inter clear.
Carrick draws the foul from Zanetti as he runs towards the box and United have a great chance. Bang central, 20 yards out. Zanetti has a pop at Carrick for diving but that is rank hypocrisy if ever I saw it.
Another forward burst from Inter as Muntari finds space inside the area and tees up Stankovic, but his shot is high and wide.
Giggs is finding space in front of Milan's back four and Ronaldo is seeing plenty of ball early on. This time he tries to run at Santon and the full back does well to force him wide and see the cross out for a goal kick.
Inter get down United's end for their first meaningful attack but after good work from Stankovic, Muntari lashes his cross into the stands. Poor.
Another free kick for United within Ronaldo range and this one flashes past the post. Two goals to tell you about, Juninho has put Lyon ahead against Barca and Atletico are leading Porto.
The home crowd howl their approval as Santon gets a foot in on Ronaldo but Fletcher quickly wins it back. United dominant early on.
Ronaldo attacked the corner and Cesar makes a superb point blank save on the line. An excellent stop.
Evra takes on Zanetti and wins a corner. Giggs trots across..
Ronaldo's effort swerves the wall but Julio Cesar is right behind it.
Ronaldo goes to ground after a Chivu challenge and is lining up the free-kick. Its 25 yards out, in line with the right edge of the area.
Jose's first involvement is to decide Inter have won a throw in and dribble the ball past Park Ji-Sung on the touchline. Admit it, we have missed him just a little bit haven't we?
The teams are out and the San Siro looks resplendent - and packed. Let the beautiful game commence...
And as for THAT STAT, here it is. The self proclaimed Special One has only ever lost once in his 12 clashes with Fergie. In truth that counts for little else than to allow Jose to pour forth this week in an attempt to rattle everybody at Old Trafford. Has it worked? Err, no.
Given the ratcheting up of the mind games this week its pretty clear that Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho occasionally lie awake at night pining for each other. They're clearly relishing the chance to lock horns again.
So, Ryan Giggs will partner Berbatov by the looks with Ibrahimovic and Adriano set to test Jonny Evans' fitness up front for Inter. In a true case of bet hedging I think this'll either be a high-scoring humdinger or a tense and edgy nil-niller.
Man Utd: Van der Sar, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick, Giggs, Park, Berbatov and Ronaldo. Subs from: Foster, Rooney, Nani, Scholes, Fabio Da Silva, Gibson and Tevez.
Inter Milan: Julio Cesar, Maicon, Rivas, Chivu, Santon, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Muntari, Stankovic, Ibrahimovic and Adriano. Subs from: Toldo, Cordoba, Maxwell, Figo, Cruz, Burdisso and Balotelli.
Interesting team news, both Jonny Evans and John O'Shea start for United but Wayne Rooney is on the bench. Inter hand a Champions League debut to defender Davide Santon after Walter Samuel misses out.
What a tie we have in prospect; quite apart from the fact that it's the Italian title holders against the reigning English and European champions, its Fergie versus Jose, and we all know who has won that battle to date.
Good evening everyone and welcome to the business end of the Champions League as Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson square off at the San Siro in Milan. It's all live with me, Chris Murphy.
Join us at 1945 GMT to see if injury-hit Man Utd can travel to beat Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan at the San Siro.
