English FA Cup
17:30 +00:00, March 8, 2008
Oakwell Stadium, England
Referee: S Bennett
This competition is now wide open! Manchester United OUT! Chelsea OUT! Portsmouth and Barnsley IN!
Barnsley are in the FA Cup semi-finals! They are heading to Wembley!
Never has the phrase 'the beauty of the FA Cup' been so apt.
Players are being hoisted shoulder high by Barnsley's fans. Jubilant scenes from one of the greates Cup shocks of ALL TIME!
Right at the end John Terry fired a volley goalwards and Bobby Hassell headed clear. There is now a full scale pitch invasion by the delirious Barnsley fans. Unbelievabele!
AMAZING! Barnsley have done it! they've dumped FA Cup holders out of the competition.
There's a bit of a delay as some fans came on the pitch as they thought the ref had blown the whistle!
There are only seconds left!
Amazing! There is just no space inside the area. Anytime a Chelsea player hits a shot it goes into a crowd of players. After a session of pinball SWP gets a sight of goal but his volley is over the bar. Barnsley are on the brink!
Whistles ring around Oakwell!
Michael Coulson is down after a terrible tackle from Ricardo Carvalho. He gets a yellow when it could easily have been red. Bennett waited to see if their would be an advantage as Howard charged through on goal but there wasn't so Barnsley have a free kick.
there are about 18 players in the Barnsley box! It just won't break for a Chelsea player, until Pizarro hits one Kozluk blocks. Then Terry and Anelka exchange passes ten yards out but the Chelsea captain's shot is high and wide.
Cole's cross is whacked clear by Howard.
Campbell-Ryce does wonderfully well to sprint back and mug SWP of the ball as he looked to cross. This is amazing last ditch defending from Barnsley.
Barnsley are SO deep now they are nearly huddling on Luke Steele's goal line.
Everyone bar John Terry and and Carlo Cudicini are in the Barnsley half. Meanwhile, Pizarro brings down a long punt superbly but Hassell blocks his shot brilliantly.
This is getting extremely dodgy for Chelsea. They are five minutes away from being dumped out of the cup by mid-table Championship side Barnsley, and Avram Grant is five minutes away from a world of pain.
Great determination for Howard, who piles through two Chelsea players to nod the ball forward. The Tykes' skipper has been immense today.
Ballack takes the free kick, tries to drive it through the crowd but Hassell gets a block. Then Barnsley are slow to push up and are thankful to Souza who hacks Bridge's cross clear.
Joe Cole has won a free-kick right on the edge of the box, Campbell-Ryce hacked him down. Big chance for Chelsea.
Goal scoring hero Kayode Odejayi is off and Michael Coulson is on.
Campbell-Ryce gives his defenders a much needed breather by hitting a shot that goes behind for a Chelsea goal kick.
Carvalho charges forward, draws Foster and flicks it to Cole but it is overhit and runs out of play before Cole can reach it.
Barnsley are happy just to leave the brute Odejayi up front and everyone else is defending very deep.
Cole has been brilliant this half - he feeds SWP who turns well but shows how weak his left foot is by slamming it wide.
The FA Cup holders have gone three at the back and everyone else up front. Barnsley are strapped in for 15 minutes worth of 'if your life depended on it' style defending.
Chelsea sub. Beletti off, Pizarro on.
Odejayi is a brute! Wayne Bridge is very nearly barged off the ball after a Hassell through ball!
Luke Steele shows Cudicini how it was done, coming to claim the corner superbly.
There's blood on Devaney's shirt so Bennett is insisting he change it. On the field, Chelsea have a corner.
Devaney is down for Barnsley after a knock in the face. He bumped noses with Essien.
Chelsea work a ball into the area and Hassell does well to clear from under the feet of Ballack. Its going to be all hands to the pump for the last 20.
Well, my word. Chelsea are staring at an early exit from the FA Cup. they have 22 minutes to avoid a massive upset. Could Manchester United and Chelsea go out in the same day?!
Chelsea go straight on the attack and Essien has a shot before the ball rebounds to Cole who is given offside, wrongly, because there was a Barnsley defender on the line. Shocking from the linesman.
Van Homoet swings in a cross, and Odejayi outmuscles Cudicini and nods the ball into the net. Poor keeping, great forward play and well done to Steve Bennett for not giving a non-existent free kick, which many refs would have done.
GOAL! Odejayi beats Cudicini to a cross and Barnsley have scored! GOAL!
Ha ha! Kozluk tries to smack a clearance downfield but SWP gets his face in the way and the ball is behind for a goal kick. Comedy!
Wayne Bridge is currently operating as a left winger, such is the Premier League side's sominance at present.
Anelka! Six yards out, clear sight of goal, what does he do? Falls over and scuffs it. Oh dear.
Chelsea change. Maluoda off, Kalou on.
For some reason Wayne Bridge has clipped a cross deep into the area looking for the big frame of SWP. It didn't work.
Great interplay between Beletti and Cole. The right back slides a sexy pass into the area and Cole cuts back well, but crucially, behind Anelka.
Skipper Brian Howard turns and shoots from 25 yards but Cudicini scoops up cleanly.
Entering the final third of the match...
Nice ball in from Van Homoet, as Barnsley look to regain the intiative. Cudicini flaps somewhat, but eventually grabs hold.
Another chance for Chelsea. A lovely ball from SWP slips Joe Cole in. He crosses, JT heads down to Anelka but his shot is blocked into the ground by Kozluk. Corner. Wasted. Carry on...
Another excellent Chelsea move. A drilled crossfield pass from Bridge, a wonderful chest down from Cole and then a ball to Anelka who strays offside when there was no excuse for it. A great move ends poorly.
A booking for Rob Kozluk and rightly so. There was no need to pile in to Joe Cole who was on the touchline. Now Chelsea have a free kick too.
Oh, Nicolas Anelka's playing! He reminds us he is present with a nice jinking run before dribbling a shot into the arms of Steele.
Avram Grant has definitely been lobbing some tea cups around the changing room judging by the look of Chelsea so far. They look hungry all of a sudden. Well, podgy Michael Ballack always looks hungry doesn't he?
Cole again looks menacing, cutting in and striking left footed but this fierce shot hits Michael Ballack who was lurking in the six yard box.
Chelsea's best chance; Anelka down the channel, pulls it back for Joe Cole with a clear sight of goal but the ball bobbles horrendously and his left footed effort goes wide. Bennett gives a corner, inexplicably.
Already Chelsea look more threatening. A lovely one touch moves culminates with a wicked Joe Cole cross and a desperate flick of the hand from Luke Steele. Game on.
I expect a much improved Chelsea performance this half, and I'm sure Avram Grant will be as well.
We begin again....
The little breaks are still going for Barnsley as we head to HT. Bridge's dangerous cross is shanked by Souza but loops into the arms of the very grateful Luke Steele. See you in 15 minutes...
You just wonder whether Barnsley might live to rue their missed chances this half because Chelsea surely can't be this bad in the second period can they?
The home crowd are in raptures at their team's first half performance, and rightly so.
Joe Cole should have sprayed it wide to Anelka who was clean through but instead was insistent on finding SWP on the right. Bad choice.
Carvalho is starting to lose his rag! He rages at Benett after Odejayi again roughed him up, winning a throw in in the process.
Good tracking back by Van Homoet who stayed with Wayne Bridge and blocked his attempted cross.
Cudicini claims the corner well, then promptly hoofs the ball out of play inside his own half. Interesting.
Another chance! Odejayi is through but again takes it wide allowing Cudicini to narrow the angle, then save with his legs. Come on Barnsley!
OH! Barnsley have oh-so nearly scored! A long free kick finds its way through to Ferenczi who volleys goalwards and hits the post!
Luke Steele comes to meet a long ball aimed for Anelka and wins a free kick after the Frenchman tackled him mid-air.
The minutes left until half time and it is vital Barnsley get there without having conceded. It'd do wonders for their confidence to go in scoreless, or dare I say it, ahead!
Another cracking challenge from Kozluk on Anelka - he's bang up for this - and Avram Grant is up moaning at the fourth official. They don't like their players being tackled hard these precious Premier League bosses do they? Sit down!
More joy for Chelsea down the right as Beletti and Cole combine. But the Brazilian's cross is skewed and Barnsley have a goal kick.
Odejayi is at it again and if Carvalho thought he was going to have a nice relaxing early evening in Yorkshire he's very much mistaken.
What a lovely back heel by Davaney - he's looked very lively so far! Unfortunately, Ferenczi can't get past JT. Flair from the Tykes! They're toying with Chelsea (almost)!
Steve Bennett has blown for a free kick as Joe Cole lumped a ball into the box. Quite what he saw I don't know.
Superb clearance under his own crossbar from Kozluk as Bridge's cross swerved dangerously into the path of Joe Cole. Corner.
The longer this game stays goalless the more Barnsley are growing in confidence.
Nice break from the minature SWP. He bursts into the area after a lovely ball from Joe Cole but he tries to shoot instead of cross and ends up looking silly.
A nice break down the left from the aforementioned Van Homoet but his cross is blocked by Bridge then clips his knee and rolls behind for a goal kick.
Ridiculous from Essien, he fails to bring the ball down then pretends he was struck in the face by Van Homoet and goes down. Useless!
Michael Essien is at it again, clipping Brian Howard and conceding a free kick. The hapless Bennett gives him a lecture but no card.
Odejayi has very nearly scored! Cudicini thought he couldn't pick up a ricochet off John Terry, dithered then the striker came in and blocked his attempted clearance but it flew wide. It could easily have been the opening goal!
Chelsea are turning the screw a little here after a bright opening from Barnsley.
What a weak effort from Nicolas Anealka, He makes a nice run and Ballack finds him, but for some reason he tries a strange half volley and dinks it nicely into the arms of keeper Luke Steele.
First real sight of goal for Chelsea, first Anelka hits one, then Cole picks up the rebound, drops the shoulder comes inside and only a great block by Kozluk prevents a certain goal. Brilliant defending.
Odejayi wins another free kick after some nifty footwork and the ball is aimed towards Stephen Foster but Bridge wins it in the air and Chelsea hoof clear.
From the corner the ball again falls to Cole who hits a right foot volley which drifts wide. Ref Steve Bennett gives a goal kick despite an obvious Barnsley deflection. He's an awful ref.
Chelsea break for the free kick and Joe Cole has has space on the overlap, he cuts in and hits left footed but Hassell blocks well. Corner.
Odejayi has burst past Carvalho, the defender clipping him as he was in full flight. It should have been a booking. It is a free-kick though which comes to nothing.
Cudicine punches the corner clear.
Barnsley are looking dangerous here! A great run by Devaney saw Howard take the ball on the edge of the box but despite having space to turn into, he came back out to Kozluk. Then the ball finds its way into the box and Carvalho flicks out a leg to prevent it reaching Odejayi.
Barnsley have just wasted a free kick. Surely part of their game plan is to threaten from set plays so their delivery is going to have to get miles better.
Odejayi was through there, with Carvalho on his shoulder but for some reason he delays his shot and Chelsea get numbers back to smother the attack. Hit it son, hit it!
Oh dear, we have a new leader in the 'poorest shot of the afternoon' competition. Brian Howard has nearly hit the corner flag from 30 yards.
The Blues force their first corner thanks to SWP, but Kozluk clears. Joe Cole brings the ball down nicely but then smashes a shot into Row Q, which is quite near the back of the stand, but not as far as Row Z.
Barnsley have made a decent start here, and its clear they will attack Chelsea whenever they can. Good on 'em.
Odejayi is penalised for a barge on Carvalho, quite unfairly I thought.
Michael Ballack is getting in the party spirit by blasting a shot into Row Z. Hilarious! What a prankster he is!
Its a poor corber and then Chelsea break. Bridge gets to the byline and Maluoda fluffs his header right in front of goal. Great start to the game.
Great chance for Barnsley! Campbell-Rice slides a ball into the box and Howard had a clear sight of goal before John Terry came across. Corner!
Odejay shows Carvalho he'll be putting himself about with a neat shoulder barge while the Portugeuse defender jumped for a header. Expect spades of commitment from Barnsley early on, they'll be bang up for this.
And we're off!
There is a minute's silence for Derek Dooley, a former Sheffield Wednesday player and Sheffield United chairman who died this week.
Here come the teams to a traditional Yorkshire day in early March; wind, rain and bitterly cold. 'Appen it might just suit t'home side methinks...
So, no Drogba and no Lampard for Chelsea, while Barnsley look like they are going for it with two strikers and two wingers in the line-up.
Chelsea: Cudicini, Belletti, Terry, Carvalho, Bridge, Essien, Ballack, Malouda, Wright-Phillips, Anelka and Joe Cole.
Here are the teams, starting with the Tykes: Steele, Van Homoet, Foster, Souza, Kozluk,
Campbell-Ryce, Hassell, Howard, Devaney, Odejayi and Ferenczi.
This should be a forgone conclusion, but then that's how pundits were predicting their game with Liverpool at Anfield in the last round and we all know what happened then. Don't we?
So, we have already seen one cup shock today - Pompey dumping a furious (ha ha) Sir Alex Ferguson out of the cup at Old Trafford. The game was decided by one goal, a late Sulley Muntari penalty, and provided us one of the season's most comical sights - Rio Ferdinand trying to save a penalty. Ha ha ha.
Good evening one and all and welcome to live coverage of a David and Goliath FA Cup quarter-final tie between Chelsea and Barnsley from deepest, darkest Yorkshire, with me Chris Murphy.
Join us at 1730 GMT to see if underdogs Barnsley can cause a massive upset and dump the holders, Chelsea, out of the FA Cup!
