Spain win 4-2 on penalties
Goalkeeper Casillas was the hero and Spain go through to a semi-final with Russia.
It may have gone to penalties but in the end the best team won. The Spainish really went out to win the game whilst Italy played a defensive game.
...the Arsenal player beats Buffon and as the net bulges the Spanish celebrate a 4-2 penalty shoot out win over Italy.
Fabregas steps up for Spain. If he scores Spain are through...
...Casillas saves low to his left. A copy of Buffon's save. 3-2 to Spain.

Penalties it is! Italy have won their last two shootouts, including the World Cup final, and Spain have lost three in the quarter-finals of big competitions on this very date - June 22.

Villa spreads the play to the left for Cazorla, whon is racing into the box....
Guiza finds a little bit of room and shoots from 30-yards out. His shot is still rising as it flies into the fans.
Del Piero takes on two players and loses out to Ramos. Neither team can build an attack at the moment.
Italy have one player in the box. Not the sign of a team busting a gut to get a winning goal.
Villa backheels a pass into the path of Cazorla but the youngster can't get the ball under control to shoot.
The Spanish fans certainly don't like those tactics and whistle at the Italians.
Di Natale goes down injured off the pitch, but rolls back onto the field so the ref has to stop play. There is no doubt Italy are playing for penalties then!
Cazorla throws the ball down in frustration at not being awarded a croner and gets booked for his petulance.
Villa beats the offside trap, but he is forced wide by Chiellini and does well to win a corner. The corner comes to nothing.
Fabregas prods and probes at the Italian defence but still can't find a way through.
Italy nmake their final change - surely with penalties in mind. Aquilani goes off and is replaced by Del Piero.
Grosso delivers the freekick and it is a complete waste.
Camoranesi gets a kick in his shoulder from Ramos and Italy have a freekick on the angle of the area.
Italy get the final half of extra-time underway.
Well there is 15 minutes remaining before we go to penalties.
...it is a very poor effort. The ref blows for half-time in extra-time.
Fabregas has a chance to whip in freekick....
Ramos finds Guiza on the right flank. The striker drives at Grosso and fires a shot through the defnder's legs that goes well wide of the goal.
Spain's defensive midfielder is back on his feet and the game continues.
Senna is down injured and the game is brought to a halt.
The Italian fans are singing the national anthem to try and boost their flagging team.
Spain build through midfield. Fabregas flicks the ball through the Italian defence for Sylva. The midfielder is clean through but the flag is up for offside.
Fabregas drives into the box but two Italian defenders converge to ease him off the ball.
Camoransei makes a poor tackle on Cazorla and the young Spaniard is hurt; but he gets up to continue.
From the corner Toni loops a near post header on to the roof of the net.
Di Natale leaps like a Salmon and forces a good save from Casillas with a powerful header. Italy have a corner.
Chiellini and Fabregas kick each other's feet and both go down in a heap clutching at their appendages.
Guiza knocks the ball down for Fabregas, who blasts his shot against Panucci. The bounces out to Sylva, who shoots inches wide of the post.
Silva whips in a freekick. Ramos goes down in the box and Chiellini lambasts the Spaniard for trying to win a penalty.
Spain restart the match and it could come down to a mistake from a tired player to decide this now... or penalties of course.
For the third game in a row it is extra-time at the Euros.
Fabregas puts in a cross. Villa can't control the ball with his first choice and a good chance goes begging at the end of the match. It will be extra-time!
Spain have a throw deep in Italy's half but they can't manufacture a chance as time ticks away.
Toni is down holding his shin after a tackle from Puyol. The ref stops play, much to the disgust of Cazorla, who was on the attack.
There are some tired players out there now.
Villa twist and turns in the box but Zambrotta stands his ground and there is no way past for Spain.
Guiza controls the ball in the box, he sets himself to shoot but the striker used his hand to control the ball and the whistle blows for a freekick.
Chiellini's socks are around his ankles - a familar sight in extra-time and it looks like that is the way we are heading.
Spain make another change. Torres goes off (and he is not happy) to be replaced by Mallorca hotshot Guiza.
Di Natale chips a cross to the back post. Toni attempts an overhead kick and takes a good shooting chance away from Grosso, who was ready to lash the ball into the back of the net.
That was a lucky escape for the Italy keeper, who very rarely makes a mistake.
Fabregas loses the ball but it spins to Senna, who fires off another long-range shot. Buffon collects the ball... but then lets the ball spill from his graps, it spins back, hits the post and then back into his clutches.
....Senna smashes in a shot and Buffon has to react quickly to beat the midfielder's effort away.
Torres wins a lucky freekick. Four red shirts are hovering around the ball....
Torres wins another corner. Fabregas whips it in this time and Italy scramble the ball clear.
Panucci concedes a corner. Fabregas takes it short, Villa flicks a cross to the back post, Ramos controls the ball on his chest and then hooks a shot at goal which Buffon saves easily.
Di Natale races onto a long pass from Camoranesi, who has really made a difference since he came on, but the flag is up for offside.
Di Natale has gone to play alongside Toni. Is this a sign of attacking intent from the Italians? Let's hope so.
Italy make a substitution. Cassano is replaced by Di Natale.
I would like everybody who is reading this to take a moment to put their hands together and pray that this match does not got to extra-time.
Villa races into the box and tries to cut inside Chiellini. The Spanish striker takes a tumble and the ref books him for diving. A sign of desperation from Villa?
Camoranesi breaks down the right and fires in a cross for Toni. The big Italian forward can only get a slight touch to the pass and his header goes wide.
Guess what happens from the corner? That's right, nothing!
....Villa places the ball. His shot deflects off the Italian wall and Spain have a corner.
Panucci fouls Villa and Spain have a freekick in the centre of the goal...
The freekick is overhit and that is typical of this game so far. Rubbish!
Some good trickery from Camoranesi launches an Italian attack. Toni takes over but has no support and all he can do is win a freekick.
Grosso's cross is only partially cleared by Puyola and Aquilani shoots wide from 30-yards out.
Fabregas drives forward, plays a one-two with Capdevila and keeps going but his efforts come to nought.
The crowd are getting behind their team now.
Italy push forward. Toni causes panic in the box as the ball ricochets around. Camoranesi finally gets a shot on goal but Casillas saves.
Spain respond with a double substitution. Off go Xavi and Iniesta and one comes Fabregas and Cazorla.
Italy make a change. the ineffective Perrotta is replaced by Camoranesi.
Capdevila races down the left. He crosses for Torres but Chiellini heads clear under pressure. A good game is threatening to break out now.
Marchena shoots from about 35-yards. When I tell you he is a centreback you can guess that the outcome was not a goal.
Cassano tricks his way through the midfield but when he looks up to make a pass there is no movement from his colleagues.
Toni tunrs Marchena and is then brought down by Senna. Toni wants a freekick but the ref is having none of it.
Senna fires a pass down the wing. Chiellini has about a ten-yard headstart on Torres but can only just clear the ball at full stretch as the pacy striker races with him for the ball.
Grosso gallops forward and whips in cross for Toni. The striker has got a yard on his marker Puyol but the flag goes up for offside.
Sylva twists and turns in the box. He looks like he has got the better of Chiellini but the big defender sticks out a leg to block Silva's shot.
Villa finds Iniesta unmarked on the corner of the box but the Spaniard takes a poor first touch. So bad in fact that the ball bounces up and hits his hand.
The fans are already whistling at the players. They want to see some decent action too.
Italy get the second-half underway.
Spain are trying to play the better football but Italy are defending very well and looking to hit on the break. Both teams are basically nullifying each other.
Well what can we say about that half? Things can only get better.
Ramos crosses to the far post for Villa but Buffon comes off his line to claim the ball. Thankfully that is the final act of the half!
Senna fouls De Rossi. Meanwhile, Marchena sneakily kicks Perrotta in the back while the ref isn't watching.
Spain attack down the left. Villa prodes the ball into the path of Iniesta, who hits a wild shot into the side netting.
I'll tell you when something happens...
Silva takes a dive on the edge of the box. The ref waves play on whilst Silva rolls around on the floor looking for sympathy.
Silva is having much more impact against Grosso than Iniesta had.
Silva attacks as Grosso backs off. The winger cuts inside the defender and fires off a leftfoot shot that just goes wide of the far post.
The Italians are trying to get Cassano into the game as he looks like the player who might create something for them.
Cassano beats Ramos and crosses from the left. Toni heads at goal but his effort deflects off Marchena in the penalty box.
Ineista smashes a shot into row Z.
Silva has switched to the right to try his luck. The midfielder has seen a lot of the ball but not really caused any problems.
Xavi wins a corner for Spain but the ref spots a foul in the box and play comes to a halt yet again.
Silva can't pick a pass through the Italian defence so he decides to have a shot. Buffon scrambles to his left to save the long-range effort.
Ambrosini piles into Senna after a poor first touch and the Italian gets booked.
Silva drives at the Italian defence and slips a great through-ball into to Torres, who is flagged offside.
Villa makes a good turn to get rid of Panucci but three white shirts swarm around him and win back possession.
Xavi picks out Iniesta with a lovely chipped pass but the Spaniard is just muscled off the ball by the bigger Grosso.
This is certainly not the exciting game we all wanted to see.
Villa pinches the ball off Panucci but his fellow centreback Chiellini comes to the rescue and tackles Villa as he waits for support.
....Villa shoots through the Italian wall but Buffon saves his low, hard shot.
Villa wins a freekick off De Rossi, 30-yards out. A great chance for a shot on goal for Spain....
Ambrosini wins the ball of Ramos but his cross from the left is delivered too early and Toni has not yet got into the box.
Panucci picks out Toni, who lays the ball off to Cassano. His shot is blocked.
The Italians are getting on top in this game now. Ambrosini is looking for the ball over the defence for Toni which caused so much damage to the French.
Ambrosini crosses from the left. Perrotta gets a chance to head at goal but doesn't trouble Casillas.
Panucci attempts to play offside and Torres races clear down the left. The Italian defence quickly recovers and Torres can only poke a hopeful shot over the bar.
Villa is caught by Ambrosini and the game stops as the striker gets some treatment.
Torres beats Grosso and skirts the edge of the box. Ambrosini stands firm and makes a great tackle in the penalty area.
Capdevila gets the ball and throws his arms up in frustration as he waits for somebody to make a run for him.
Zambrotta maraudes forward but his cross is poor. Very scrappy game from the Italians at the moment.
Chiellini looks to be losing a foot race with Villa but Buffon rushes off his line to clear the danger. That could be a way to breach the Italian defence for Spain.
Iniesta fouls Grosso. there was nothing in it but the Spanish midfielder gets booked.
Torres is robbed by Cassano and the Spain striker fouls the Italian as he attempts to win the ball back.
Spain with all the possession at the moment.
Capdevilla and Silva play a lovely one-two on the left. Capdevilla shoots from the edge of the box but his effort is deflected into the arms of Buffon.
De Rossi whips in a freekick for Toni to head. The striker bears down on Casillas but the keeper plucks the ball out of the air.
It is a hot night in Vienna and that may be contributing to this slow start to the game.
Xavi and Capdevilla play around with the ball on the right flank but the Italian defence will not be drawn out.
One of the first thing that strikes you about the two teams is that Italy look like a much larger team. Could be important from set pieces.
Grosso stretches his long legs down the left flank. Senna brings down De Rossi for a freekick.
Toni loops a pass over his own head looking for strike partner Cassano. Puyol heads clear.
Spain get the game underway, in their regular red and dark blue strip. Italy are wearing all white and kick from right to left.
The anthems are playing as the atmosphere bubbles away in the Stadium.

On paper the Spanish are the better team but they haven't beaten Italy in a competitive match since the 1920 Olympics.
Spain have failed at the quarter-final stage so many times before but can they actually go through this time against a stuttering Italy?
