  • 93'

Manchester United are quickly becoming 1-0 specialists and this latest result is thanks to Rooney's first goal of the season. It was by no means a classic or as compelling as last year's encounter, but important for the hosts nonetheless.

  • 93'

    FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 ROMA

  • 92'

All smiles on the United bench as Fergie senses another victory over the Italian giants.

  • 91'

Anderson eats up some precious seconds after being fouled by Mexes. It's in the Roma half and out of harms way.

  • 90'

The referee's assistant signals three added minutes as Roma come forward searching for an equaliser.

  • 89'

Ronaldo's injury is more serious than first thought and he'll take no further part. United will finish the game with 10 men.

  • 88'

What a finale that would have been. United were again caught out and Roma should have punished the hosts.

  • 87'

Best chance of the match falls to substitute Esposito. Totti's deft back heel finds the midfielder unmarked and with plenty of time and space all he can do is drive wide. It whistles past the post when it should have flew into the net.

  • 86'

Ronaldo clocks an elbow in the face. It was unintentional and there's no complaints from United. It will mean he'll need some treatment for a few seconds.

  • 85'

United have got Roma where they want them - in their own half - and have the players to kill off the game. Not long remaining for Roma to steal an unlikely leveller.

  • 84'

Here comes the change. The potential match-winner makes way for Brazilian Anderson.

  • 83'

Anderson is stripped and ready to come on. Looks like Rooney could make way.

  • 82'

Incredible chance for Roma as Man Utd are completely undone. Perotta, Totti and de Rossi all have half chances to poke home but United survive as Carrick clears at the last.

  • 81'

Roma have been forced to come forward after conceding and they're enjoying more possession since the goal.

  • 80'

Change also for Roma as Giuly makes way for Mauro Esposito.

  • 79'

Nani has worked hard throughout the game and has caused his marker a few problems down the left but is brought off for Ryan Giggs.

  • 78'

Manchester United have looked far more assured since the goal and Scholes cracks a drive wide from 25 yards.

  • 77'

A goal to tell you about in Arsenal's game in Bucharest. Robin van Persie has put the visitors one up.

  • 76'

Goal scramble at the other end is superbly dealt with by Evra. He spotted the danger and nipped in ahead of Totti to clear.

  • 74'

Tevez cracks one from just outside the area. He gets plenty of power and swerve on it but he can't find the target - it sails over.

  • 73'

A change for the visitors sees Vucinic come on for Mancini.

  • 72'

That's livened things up. Rooney's had a couple of decent chances without being a constant threat but he's well and truly left his mark on this match now.

  • 70'

It's his first goal of the season and it's a marvellous finish from WAYNE ROONEY. He took it early on the turn and shot across goal and in off the post - stunning.

  • 70'

    GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 ROMA

  • 69'

Outrageous back-heel sees Ronaldo find the back of the net. It won't count though as the winger is offside and the flag is raised.

  • 68'

Carrick bundles Mancini to the ground inside the box. There's not too many appeals as it looked clumsy and awkward, but on closer inspection it could well have been given.

  • 66'

His strike partner Louis Saha won't get any more chances to impress. He's brought off for Tevez.

  • 65'

Much better from Rooney. He's not had the drive and spark we've come to expect tonight, but he showed there why he is so dangerous.

  • 63'

I was just begining to think 'is Rooney playing?' when he drives at the Roma defence and slashes an effort low at goal that Curci turns round the post.

  • 62'

Things just starting to get stretched with gaps opening up in midfield. Carrick is bringing his wide men into the game but still no cutting edge.

  • 61'

It's like for like and he will come into the heart of the midfield.

  • 60'

That effort is to be the Italian's last contribution of the game. He pulled up sharply after hitting his shot and he comes off for David Pizarro.

  • 58'

Giuly is coming into the game more this half and he cuts in from his right flank and feeds Aquilani who places a shot just wide of Kuszcak's left post.

  • 57'

Not too many stand out performances so far. Nani has been dangerous down his left flank but there hasn't been many others who have stood out.

  • 56'

Once again Nani threatens down the left and clips a cross across goal and it bounces on top of the bar. He didn't mean it but it almost broke the deadlock.

  • 55'

Tevez is being readied along the touchline for Man Utd. There could be a change here.

  • 53'

Scoreline of the night so far is in Lyon where the hosts trail Rangers 3-0. Incredible score in France.

  • 52'

Fergie said in the break that he wants more penetration and positivity from his side. That's happening and it's opening up the game.

  • 51'

Fiery start from both sides, we could be in for goals this half.

  • 50'

Aquilani drills a firecracker after the United defence stand off and let the Frenchman have a go. There's the danger, United pushing forward and Roma countering.

  • 48'

Totti squanders a glorious chance - the best of the match. He finds some space inside the box but somehow scuffs his shot and it spoons up and over the bar.

  • 47'

No changes in the sides at the break, by the way. We're as we were.

  • 46'

First attack of the half and Ronaldo bursts down the right and drills a low cross that is well cleared by Tonetto.

  • 45'

He we go, the players are in position and Man Utd get us back under way.

  • 45'

Toothless half from both sides as Manchester United fail to break down a stubborn Roma side. A tactical battle which promises to explode in the second half.

  • 45'

    HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 ROMA

  • 44'

Dangerous break from Roma almost catches United sleeping. The Italians get numbers forward down the right and Cicniho's cross finds Guily who is crowded out by Vidic and Ferdinand and his header drops wide.

  • 42'

It's all a bit toothless from both sides so far, though and Roma will be pleased if they can reach half-time without conceding.

  • 41'

Roma finishing the half well. Not only their resolute defending but their midfielders are starting to ping some telling passes together.

  • 40'

Carrick, a scorer in this match last season, belts a half-volley from just outside the box. It was always rising and the keeper watches it go over.

  • 38'

Yellow card for Mexes. Silly from the Frenchman as he slides in on Rooney and makes no contact with the ball and plenty with the England striker.

  • 37'

Totti again has a go from distance. This time his 25-yard free-kick takes two deflections before dropping wide.

  • 36'

Curci, remember, is the stand-in keeper so word has got to him that his side need him to continue. And continue he does.

  • 35'

Curci is a whole lot of trouble in his box. It came after an innocuous collision with Saha but play has halted and he's temporarily grounded.

  • 33'

And none closer than Rooney who blasts a volley inches over the bar from 15 yards. It was another dangerous run and cross from Nani down the right and the unmarked Rooney couldn't keep his effort down.

  • 32'

Dipping free-kick from Ronaldo brings a fine save low in front from Curci. Getting closer and closer now.

  • 31'

Curci dances with danger in his own box while trying to clear. He sells Rooney an outrageous dummy and completes the clearance. Nice!

  • 30'

Totti, from 30 yards drills a low free-kick through the wall and makes Kuszczak produce a save low to his right. It was bouncing and bobbling and the Pole does well to smother.

  • 28'

Rare error in midfield from Roma allows Saha to break and from 25 yards he tries to bend in an effort with his right foot. But the right-footer can only pick out Curci who gathers with ease.

  • 26'

Man United waste the resulting corner and the pressure subsides once more.

  • 25'

First danger of the half and Nani's speculative cross forces Curci to fist away under pressure.

  • 24'

United dominating play more and more as the half draws on with Saha linking up well with the midfielders. Rooney has been quiet, though, as has Paul Scholes.

  • 22'

Half shout for a penalty as Nani fires a cross at the arm of Juan. The ref's never going to give that one and the Stretford End return to their seats.

  • 20'

One or two United passes have been somewhat lazy and have not reached their targets. It's frustrating for the hosts as they're on top at the moment.

  • 19'

United are certainly enjoying lots of possession but so far Roma look disciplined and will be the happier of the two sides at the moment.

  • 18'

Driven straight into the wall. What a waste!

  • 17'

Free-kick for United in a dangerous area after Nani was caught by Perotta. Ronaldo and Rooney hover over it.

  • 16'

Nani and Ronaldo have been relatively quiet down their flanks so far and you feel they need to get more involved and dictate matters.

  • 15'

Roma have kept a lid on United so far. That's the first job done. Will they look to sneak one of their own or take them to the break at 0-0?

  • 13'

A couple of half chances for both sides but no serious danger to the stand-in keepers.

  • 12'

Another chance and Mancini is starting to give O'Shea some problems. He volleys Cicinho's cross back across goal for Perotta who nudges an effort just wide.

  • 11'

Totti tries his luck from range - 30 yards I reckon - but he doesn't get hold of it and it bobbles through to Kuszczak.

  • 10'

Placid opening 10 minutes. It's lively but edgy and both teams look keen to get on the ball. Shaping up nicely.

  • 9'

Awful descision from the linesman gives United a lucky break. Mancini escaped O'Shea but the linesman harshly raised his flag. Kuszczak made the save anyway but it was a poor call.

  • 8'

Throughout the evening I shall try to keep you updated on other games in the Champions League, particularly Arsenal's tie in Bucharest.

  • 6'

Crunching tackle from O'Shea on Mancini and that's a nasty one. No booking though and the Brazilian should be ok to continue.

  • 5'

Slick passing spell for Roma with Totti at the heart of a fine break. O'Shea outmuscles Mancini down the left to disrupt the move and regain possession.

  • 4'

Good start this for United. Saha finds himself in space down the right channel and clips in a cross only for Juan to clear.

  • 3'

First break for Ronaldo down the left. He breaks beyond his marker and whips in a high cross that Cutrci does well to gather.

  • 2'

Both teams are fielding their reserve keepers with Kuszczak in for United and Curci in for Roma.

  • 1'

Revenge must be on the minds of the Roma players and they may fancy an upset tonight. United have not found the not too often this season and have changed things around tonight to find one.

  •

Here we go again then. Roma kick off.

  •

I'll try not to hark on about the scoreline the last time Roma were in this neck of the woods, but... it was a remarkable result that has haunted the Roma players until this day.

  •

Kick-off is fast approaching, the players emerge from the tunnnel - let the action begin!

  •

Although Nemanja Vidic was passed fit, Wes Brown missed out, so John O'Shea slots in at right-back while Owen Hargreaves does not even make the substitutes.

  •

Sir Alex Ferguson hands Louis Saha his first start since February. The last time the Italians visited the Theatre of Dreams six months ago they suffered an absolute nightmare, conceding an incredible seven goals. That is as much as United have managed in eight league games this season so Ferguson reverted to a strike pairing of Saha and Wayne Rooney, with Carlos Tevez and Ryan Giggs among those on the bench.
