United players are dejected and deflated as their Champions League dream comes to an end at the hands of a superb AC Milan side. Manchester United needed big performances from their big players but it didn't come tonight. AC Milan's ageing side, inspired by the magnificent Gattuso and the wizardry of Kaka go through to meet Liverpool in the final.

The Milan fans roar in anticipation of the final whistle: Milan, Milan, Milan!
One last chance as substitute Cafu drills a low drive straight down the throat of van der Sar.
Three minutes will be added as Dida comes to claim another high lofted cross from the deep.
No chances in these closing moments, just United hopelessly chasing down their opponents who are keeping the ball with ease.
Manchester United look frustrated as they stare defeat in the face. A Mexican wave breaks out in the stands as they know they're through.
A huge roar goes up as Dida comes to gather Heinze's deep cross. Two minutes to go.
Nothing is going United's way and it hasn't been all night really. He runs into a cul-de-sac and Milan clear their lines.
Milan are using all their experience to run down the clock and can even afford to bring off the magnificent Kaka.
Gattuso is brought off to save himself from getting involved in too many more exchanges.
Ronaldo picks up a booking for a wild lunge on Ambrosini and that means he will be ruled out of their next match. The way the game stands it won't be in Athens in two weeks.
Trouble here. An ugly brawl breaks out in the middle of the park involving who else but Gattuso. He was unhappy that United didn't give the ball back after Kaka's injury and it's all a bit nasty out there now.
Into the last 10 minutes and the visitors will need something special to pull this one out of the fire. Kaka goes down with a spot of cramp and Gattuso takes it upon himself to give his troops one last rallying cry to the finish line.
Could that be the blow that finally knocks Manchester United out of the tournament? It was one of the easier chances he'll have but he finished delightfully with a white shirt nowhere to be seen.
A gaping hole opens up in the Manchester United defence and ALBERTO GILARDINHO races through unchallenged and cooly picks his spot for Milan's third.

Louis Saha comes on for his 100th United appearance and off goes defender John O'Shea. Immediately he chases down a hopeful long ball and gets in a header that just goes wide.
Gattuso goes down and has to receive treatment but he should be ok. It will give Milan time to regroup after a good spell for United.
Milan are just getting a little careless. A few silly fouls has given United free-kicks in dangerous posistions and they're not afraid to slide in given half a chance.
Oddo concedes a corner after chasing down Giggs down the left. O'Shea gets up at the front post but no-one is there to meet the second ball.
Milan are hunting down Rooney and Ronaldo every time they break and United just aren't getting men into the right areas. Ronaldo flashes a shot wide after the referee had played advantage.
On the counter Kaka almost catches out van der Sar as his effort richochets off Vidic and bounces just wide. A welsome release of pressure for Milan.
The Milan faithful rally their troops and burst out into song, but United press through Carrick who has a shot charged down by Ambrosini.
It's Milan who are giving the ball away more now and they are starting to look the more nervy of the two sides.
Milan have sat back and lost the impetus and initiative and change things around as Gilardinho comes on for Inzaghi up front.
Manchester United for the first time in this match look like scoring and Milan are struggling to clear their lines. They're desperate to get back into this and boy are they testing Milan.
Rooney turns Nesta superbly and blazes a cross-cum-shot across goal that evades everyone.
United are domintating at the moment and Milan are under a great deal of pressure.
While I was away Darren Fletcher wasteda glorious chance to get United back into the game. From the right edge of the box he slashed an effort wide of the right post when he should have tested Dida.
Apologies for the short break there. My computer crashed and I was stranded momentarily.
From the free-kick Ronaldo again finds the wall and Dida is still yet to be troubled.
United enjoy a brief spell of possession and play it around neatly until Ronaldo is chopped down again by Gattuso.
But Dida safely gathers in the air and United's momentum is lost.
It slams into the wall and bounced behind for a corner. Ronaldo will move across to take it.
The game is starting to open up and both sides are pushing forward looking to create a chance. Scholes draws a foul from Gattuso and Ronaldo stands over it...
Vitally important save from van der Sar that keeps his side in the game. Kaka left Vidic on the deck after completely bamboozled him. He looked to direct his shot into the corner but the keeper tips the effort wide and out of reach of the onrushing Inzaghi.
Milan rested six first-team players at the weekend and they look fresh for it.
United look completely flat and are being chased around the ground by a buoyant Milan side.
The rain has eased up and it's helping the players string together some decent spells of possession.
Giggs gives the ball away this time and that won't please Alex Ferguson. That was the root of their first-half shortcomings and will need to cut that out sharpish.
The Milan fans may be soaked but they're singing away as happy as Larry.
United restart the game as they seek to claw back the two-goal defecit.
The players are back out and we're ready for the second half.
A half that Man United will want to forget. From the first whistle Milan caused the visitors all sorts of problems and have a crucial 2-0 lead at the break after strikes from Kaka and Seedorf.
HALF-TIME: AC MILAN 2-0 MANCHESTER UNITED
Posssibly the last chance of the half and Ronaldo wastes it by slashing high and wide. They have got to raise their game in the second half.
Thunderbolt of a drive from Rooney leaves Nesta stunned and shaken after he bravely got in the waty of the chance.
Comedy defending from Man United almost gifts Inzaghi with a chance to score. Van der Sar and Vidic collide but the Dutch keeper recovers to make and important clearance inside his box.
Another chance for Milan and this time Inzaghi gets to the near post and gets on the end of Jankuluvski's fierce cross. Fortunately for Man Utd it goes just wide.
Pirlo wastes a free-kick from a long way out. He hit it with a casual swagger and unsurprisingly it ends up in the stands.
Rooney comes down to the left and delivers a teasing cross that Dida gathers at the second attempt under pressure from Ronaldo.
United win a corner and there's plenty of pushing and shoving in the box. As it comes in the ref spopts a foul and Milan have a free-kick.
The possession stats tell us that Milan have had 52% and United 48%. Milan though have made it count where it matters.
Fletcher tries to get United going with a searching run down the right flank but he's run himself into a cul-de-sac and Milan tidy up.
United need to have a look at their defending. They look all at sea and need to steady the ship quickly.
Shocking defending from United as CLARENCE SEEDORF puts Milan two-up. First Heinze gives the ball away and when it dropped to Seedorf, he powered past a weak Vidic challenge and rifled his shot into the bottom corner. Van der Sar helpless.

Not alot is going United's way in the final third. Both Giggs and Rooney are giving the ball away too often and that's putting the defence on the back foot.
All Milan at the moment. They win a corner after a dangerous spell of possession. The full-backs are bombing forward with ease and causing all sorts of havoc.
Both teams starting to string together some free-flowing passing moves now. Nice interchange from Milan almost creates a chance down the left but Vidic clears well.
Heinze rises to meet Ronaldo's corner but can't get enough purchase on it and Dida makes the save.
The rain is still bucketing down and it's causing a few players to lose their footing.
Better from United. They're clawing their way back into this tie and they've certainly raised their game in the last five minutes with some nice cross-field passing and moving.
Giggs tests Dida for the first time with a low drive, but the Brazilian gets down low and makes a firm save.
Poor decision from the linesman as Paul Scholes is given offside when he was clearly played on by Pirlo. It won't matter too much though as he flashes his header wide.
Pirlo winds up a rasping left-footer but it's well wide of van der Sar's post and it'll be a goal kick. No shots for United yet.
Gattuso is chasing and harrying like a terrier on speed. It's working well as he's breaking up United's play to good effect.
A draw will be enough for United to go through and they will be encouraged by the openness of the game so far.
United are contributing to their own downfall here by giving the ball away far too easily. It's a very open game and Milan continue to come forward.
United need to settle quickly as Milan have shot out of the traps. A corner gives some relief but it's wasted by Giggs and Milan clear.
Who else? The ever-alert KAKA thumps home a left-foot half-volley from just inside the area and right into the bottom corner. It was a top class strike from a quality player and Milan's blistering start is rewarded with a goal.

But Milan don't let United settle for too long and quickly wrestle back play. Gattuso wins an important challenge on Ronaldo and the visitors look hurried.
United at last get a spell on the ball. They looked rattled in the first 5 minutes but have just got their foot on the ball and passed it among themselves.
Milan dominating possession at the moment and Oddo whips in a cross from the right and Kaka gets on the end of it, unfortunately for him he can't get the power on it to beat the keeper and van der Sar gathers with ease.
What a start that would have been for the hosts. In the end it was a very good save from van der Sar and it's kept his side in the game.
Wonderful strike from Seedorf on the edge of the box rattles van der Sar and the keeper is forced into palming over the bar.
This pitch is brand new and is being played on for the very first time tonight. It looks a treat but it may cut up with this amount of rain.
Kaka skins Vidic for deadand fires in a cross that evades everyone and bobbles behind. An early warning for United there.
The conditions will favour the visitors what with all that rain and all.
Milan get us under way!
The players have taken their positions and we're moments away from the off.
Weather update: It's absolutely lashing it down in Milan. Most fans are soaked to the bone already and we've heard a few claps of thunder to add into the mix. It really is grim out there but the uncomfortable elements are sure to make for a thrilling contest.
For Milan, Maldini is missing but Gattuso starts. Inzaghi comes in for Gilardinho to partner Kaka as the hosts start with two up front.
Kick-off is approaching and the teams are in. The big news for Man Utd is that Nemanja Vidic will start in defence, but Rio Ferdinand is not fit to return.
San Siro is tonight's venue to decide who will meet Liverpool in this year's final. Manchester United are ahead 3-2 and will start as narrow favourites to progress, but don't discount Milan, they have two decisive away goals.
