Rooney reminds the footballing world what a wonderful talent he is by delivering the most clinical of strikes at the most critical of times. AC Milan have their two away goals, but United have pulled off a spirited comeback that will live long in the memory. We'll be back for the return leg in the San Siro. See you then!
FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 3-2 AC MILAN
Unbelievable finish from WAYNE ROONEY! A glorious strike from the youngster caps off a remarkable night of football and a sensational revival from Manchester United. It could well be a priceless strike and there's only 2 minutes left.
GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 3-2 AC MILAN
Milan have completely faded in this second half and United have enjoyed far more possession and chances. Milan will be looking to play down the clock now.
Ronaldo smashes it and Brochi breaks off the wall to divert it over for a corner. Milan clear the danger through Seedorf.
Yet another free-kick in a dangerous position for Manchester United. It's a little further out than the previous set-pieces but just left of centre...
Milan make a defensive change with Yoann Gourcuff replacing the lone front man Gilardino.
Pure Ronaldo. Cuts in from the left and unleashes a firecracker that fizzes into the sidenetting. Great effort from the winger who was inches away from putting his side ahead.
Into the last 10 minutes and Milan look to be settling for what they've got.
Sweeping move from United and Fletcher gets in a low drive to Dida's near post. The keeper is down early and gathers.
Heinze does what he failed to do in the first half and stop Kaka in his tracks. Wonderful strong challenge from the Argentine.
Rooney drags a hopeful shot well wide in a somewhat lazy effort on goal.
Ronaldo and Nesta crash into the advertising boards after a chase in the box. They're shaken but should continue.
Andrea Pirlo, from all of 30 yards, glides a free-kick up and over the wall forcing van der Sar to get across and dive low to clear the danger. Very casual from the Dutchman.
AC Milan are certainly missing Gattuso in the heart of midfield with Scholes and Carrick dominating matters in the middle of the park.
Giggs again bends his left foot around it and this time it's too close to Dida who gobbles it up with ease. United retain possession though and begin to build once more.
United definitely on top now and they win another free-kick in a dangerous position. 25 yards out and Giggs and Ronaldo line it up.
It's Giggs who takes it and it dips up and over the wall but doesn't curl enough to beat Dida and he watches it fizz wide.
Free-kick in a dangerous position for Manchester United. Scholes was hauled down 25 yards out and Ronaldo hovers over it...
Good opening created by Giggs as he tears down the right and delivers a teasing cross that just evades the onrushing Paul Scholes.
This really is a facinating contest. It could go either way still but United will fancy another goal now. They're edging matters at the moment.
Terrific play by United and a remarkable save from Dida keeps the score to 2-2. Fletcher drills in a shot after a mix-up in the defence and the Brazilian stopper gets across well to parry round the post.
Milan can't clear their lines with any great efficiency.
The pendulum swings back to United now as the crowd roar on their side who are back on top.
Exquisite move from Manchester United and WAYNE ROONEY is on hand to squeeze home the equaliser. It was a quick passing move in which Scholes scooped through the most delightful of passes leaving Rooney to tuck past Dida.
GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 2-2 AC MILAN
Milan are on top at the moment. Those two chances for Kaka have put United on the back foot temporarily and made United think twice when breaking forward.
Two chances in a minute for Kaka. The first from a tight angle squirms wide while the second, after a cross from Seedorf, is volleyed narrowly wide.
Some objects are thrown on to the field as Dida goes to take his goal kick. It makes for a frustration break in play for United who are keen to keep things moving.
Milan have lost two of their big name players tonight and United will fancy their chances of testing the two replacements.
Milan will have to do without Gattuso for the rest of the game though. He's aggravated the injury that he picked up in the first half and is taken off on a stretcher. On comes Cristian Brocchi in his place.
Some patient and progressive build-up play from United now but Milan are standing firm.
United, as you would expect, have started the half brightly. Milan have adopted a more defensive stance and United are pressing for a way back into the tie.
Unbelievable miss by Michael Carrick! He ghosted to the back post from a corner and under no pressure he volleyed wide with the goal at his mercy. There was no marking and still he managed to miss from five yards.
Ronaldo, as in the first half is just guilty of taking the ball too far. He gets caught in possession by Gattuso after jinking past Pirlo.
We're back under way.
The players are back out and ready and Milan make a change with Bonera on for Maldini.
Wonderful half of football. Ronaldo's early strike is cancelled out by two stunning solo efforts by Kaka meaning a facinating second half awaits.
HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-2 AC MILAN
Gattuso hobbles off the field after a challenge from behind from Evra. Evra will have to be careful, he's only just been shown the yellow card remember. Gattuso should be ok to return.
Frustrating few minutes for Manchester United as a couple of 50-50 challenges go against them.
Bad news for Patrice Evra. He's got himself booked for a tug on Oddo and that will mean that he misses the return leg in Milan next week.
United need the half-time whistle as Nesta fires in a header from a corner that just goes over the bar.
Moments after Kaka nets, he creams a low bouncing shot along the turf that van der Sar does well to get down to and palm round the post.
Old Trafford is eerily quiet save the travelling Milan fans who are paying homage to thier genius Kaka.
If that KAKA'S first strike was sublime, this one was truly special. On his own in attack with three United players to beat and he leaves all three of them on the floor with a combination of strength, power and shocking defending, Kaka strokes home to complete a memorable move.
GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-2 AC MILAN
Thunderous strike from Ronaldo brings a fantastic save from Dida. With his left foot Ronaldo unleashes a thunderbolt from 25 yards that swerves and dips forcing Dida to palm away.
Evra looks to have shaken off any injury he had. Much of the United attacks emanate from the left flank with Giggs and the Frenchman causing Oddo all sorts of problems.
It's desperatle tight with both sides enjoying lots of possession and chances. Too close to call at the moment.
Another chance for Rooney as Giggs clips in a low cross that narrowly evades the outstretched boot of the striker and drops to safety.

A few long balls from the United back line are easily headed clear. The crowd don't seem too happy with that approach.
Evra drifts offside after being played through by Ronaldo. He should have checked his run as he was clean through on goal with a fine chance to score.
United slowing down the pace and working the ball along midfield, patiently building up their next attack.
What a great game we have in prospect now. United will have to come out and attack once more and regain that early zest that brought them their first goal.
You just have to stand and admire that strike. KAKA scores a sublime solo effort after being fed through by Seedorf. Kaka ghosted past Heinze and from an acute angle he slotted into the corner with his left foot. Incredible!!!
GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-1 AC MILAN
Milan just starting to edge their way back into the game now. Seedorf is getting on the ball more and so too is Kaka who has shown some neat touches.
Dangerous corner from AC Milan and Kaka fails to get any direction on a header that he really should have hit the target with.
Just as I write, they put together their first meaningful attack with Oddo finding some room on the edge of the box and providing a cross for Ambosini who fails to get any leverage on his header.
Milan on the other hand, look shell-shocked and hesitant. No attacks from them as yet.
Milan cannot get out of their own half at the moment with Red shirts piling forward at every opportunity. They look fearless out there and full of invention and industry.
There's only one team in it at the moment with United completely on top. Carrick volleys Giggs cross through a crowd of Milan shirts and Dida is again forced into action to make a diving save.
News has just filtered through to me that Dida has in fact been credited with the own goal. Sorry, Ronaldo, there's plenty of time yet though.
It's all United and a Ronaldo is teed up for another header by Wayne Rooney but his downward header bounces up safely into the arms of Dida.
Dida won't want to see the replay of the goal too many times. He completely misjudged the flight of the ball and got himself into a right mess! The dubious goals panel may even decide to credit him with the goal as he had the final touch.
Incredible start for Man United. They're buzzing at the moment and the crowd sense another strike. Ronaldo embarks on a trademark run down the left cutting in and shooting just wide.
From the corner CRISTIANO RONALDO powerfully heads goalwards and Dida can only palm it in the air. The ball then loops up over the tall keeper and Heinze tries to bundle it in but the ball drops in anyway - Ronaldo will claim it and United have a dream start.
GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 AC MILAN
Great chance for Rooney early doors. Nesta's diving challenge blocks the Englishman's half volley and it hops over for a corner.
Some tentative touches on both sides as play switches from one side to another.
It's a raucus atmospere inside Old Trafford tonight and the home support are in fine fettle.
Milan get us under way.
AC Milan have an average age of over 30 in their starting line-up and Paolo Maldini he leads his players out on to the Theatre of Dreams.
