Last 5 Matches

Liverpool: L-W-L-W-W

Barcelona: W-L-W-W-D

2nd Leg: 2 - 2 (Agg)

  • 93'

Liverpool progress to the quarter-finals after dumping out Barcelona who have been awful over the two legs.

  • 93'

FULL-TIME: LIVERPOOL 0-1 BARCELONA: Liverpool go through on away goals

  • 92'

That famous anthemn rings around Anfield and that can only mean one thing. They're on the verge of another win. And they deserve it. Benitez has got his tactics spot on and his players have followed his instruction to the letter.

  • 91'

Wonderful chance for Crouch after a lovely Pennant cross. The big man did well to get to the near post and make contact, but he conuldn't keep it down and it balloons over.

  • 90'

Three minutes will be added, but in truth, Barca need about 33.

  • 89'

Crouch comes on for Kuyt as Liverpool look to hang on for just a few more minutes.

  • 88'

Barca are becoming their own worst enemy by wasting shots, giving away passes and handing over possession.

  • 85'

It's all hands to the pump for Liverpool and Steve Finnan twice blocks Gudjohnsen in his tracks and Liverpool move closer to a famous victory.

  • 84'

Liverpool are still enjoying much of the posession and you don't get the feeling of Barca nicking that second goal.

  • 82'

Aurellio clips a left-foot free-kick from the edge of the box that just nicks the top of the wall and hands Liverpool a corner. From it, Gerrard fires a fierce drive that brings a dramatic dive from Valdez.

  • 80'

Some of the swagger is starting to return to Barcelona now but Liverpool are still breaking up moves and hurrying Barca into mistakes.

  • 79'

Pennant goes into the book with a high, raking boot on Messi. I would have been tempted to brandish a red for that dangerous tackle.

  • 78'

One goal would do it for Barcelona but they would scarcely deserve it. They haven't done much over the two legs but can they find that crucial second goal tonight?

  • 76'

Liverpool make a change and bring on Aurelio for Riise. The Liverpool fans get behind their hereos as Barca look to push forward once more.

  • 75'

Former Chelsea favourite Eidur Gudjohnsen slips past Reina and taps into an open net for a well-taken goal. It gives Barca a lifeline and the wind is in the Barca sails now.

  • 74'

  • 71'

With Barca throwing numbers forward, gaps will open in the Barcelona defence and Gerrard runs into run and rattles off a shot that stings the hands of Valdez.

  • 70'

Last throw of the dice for Barcelona? They throw on Eidur Gudjohnsen in place of Thuram and switch to a 3-4-4 formation.

  • 68'

Not been too many nervous moments for Liverpool in this match and their stubborn defensive unit doesn't look like handing out any more.

  • 67'

The home fans are beginning to believe this tie is done and dusted. They're on their feet and singing again and enjoying watching their side hold the holders at bay.

  • 65'

A quarter of the match to play and Liverpool look good for their advantage. Liverpool make a change with Bellamy departing in place of Jermaine Pennant.

  • 62'

The game is starting to stretch now with both sides streaming forward. Liverpool still feel they can grab a goal that would surely end the tie. Barca don't look as if they can muster one, let alone two.

  • 62'

Kuyt tries an ambitious volley from 30 yards that keeps Valdez guessing. It bounces safely wide but it's another reminder that Liverpool are far the more likely to seize the initiative.

  • 60'

A change for Barcelona and it's Guily who comes on for Eto'o. It's a slight surprise with Barca needing two goals, but the visitors need some fresh ideas quickly.

  • 58'

Fantastic combination between the Barca front two ends with a tame shot from Messi that Reina pounces on. A fine move but Barca need more.

  • 57'

Gerrard is given a half chance by Kuyt down the right, but he reaches at his shot and it bobbles wide.

  • 55'

Rijkaard is starting to look a little bit twitchy in his seat. The usual model of calm and collectedness is in trouble here and needs his players to respond quickly if they're to have a chance of going through.

  • 53'

Looking back at the replay and you have to say that Ronaldinho should have scored. He was clean through and should have slotted his effort beyond Reina.

  • 52'

The magic of Ronaldinho comes back and a moment of breathtaking skill almost hands Barca a lifeline. He skipped away from two weak challenges and fired his shot against the post. Stunning.

  • 50'

First free-kick of the night from Ronaldinho and it's hit well and evades the wall, but it didn't have the juice to beat Reina who moves across his line to make the save.

  • 49'

Every time Messi, Eto'o, Deco or Ronaldinho get near the ball they are soon crowded out by a swarm of red shirts. It's a fine display of defensive pressing.

  • 47'

Sartorial spot of the night. Deco is sporting odd boots and it hasn't done him any favours so far this evening.

  • 46'

What a chance for Bellamy. Steven Gerrard's perfect cross from the right finds the Welshman inside the box but he somehow loses the flight of the ball and it just deflects of his thigh and clear. Another wasted chance for Liverpool.

  • 45'

And play resumes as Barca go in search of two vital goals.

  • 45'

The players are back out and we're ready for the second half.

  • 45'

Liverpool are 45 minutes away from a hard-fought and well-deserved place in the quarter-finals. Barcelona have done nothing that half to suggest they will score two in the next. It has been the home side who have closest to scoring with Riise and Sissoko both hitting the bar.

  • 45'

  • 44'

A corner on the stroke of half-time for Barca but nothing doing from it. Liverpool can head into the break more than satisfied with the way the first half has turned out.

  • 42'

Carragher is having a monumental performance at the heart of the Liverpool defence. That's three crucial tackles he's made this half, the latest is on Eto'o.

  • 40'

Ronaldinho, so often Barca's saviour does not look in the mood tonight. He's lumbering around not looking too pleased with what's unfolding around him.

  • 39'

Sissoko is treading a very thin line. He's already been booked but it's not deterred him from flying into some meaty tackles.

  • 37'

Reina is still untroubled and Liverpool's resilience and concentration so far has been first rate.

  • 35'

A neat, slick, passing attack involving Eto'o and Messi almost gives the Cameroonian a run on goal, but he is denied by the linesman's raised flag.

  • 35'

A training-ground routine corner that sees Ronaldinho lurk on the edge of the box and volley Deco's cross flies miles over the bar and typifies the Brazilian's contribution so far. He has produced next to nothing and his side are not firing at all.

  • 31'

The Liverpool fans are understandably cock-a-hoop right now. They're watching their side dominate Barcelona at the moment and they're more than happy to see this continue.

  • 30'

That's twice Liverpool have hit the bar now and this time Sissoko rattles it. It was a terrible clearance by Valdez that fell to Sissoko and his quick reactions almost put the Reds ahead. A neat effort from 25 yards out.

  • 28'

The Frenchman isn't so smart with his next challenge though. It's on Kuyt again but this time it was late and ugly and subsequently earns him a booking.

  • 26'

Kuyt goes on a lung-busting run upfield and despite being shepherded by a hoard of yellow shirts he creates a chance. A fine block eventually from Thuram saves the danger.

  • 24'

A remarkable double save from Valdes keeps his side in the tie. Bellamy and Kuyt were both denied from close range by the Spaniard who somehow got down twice to claw away the shots. Phenomenal goalkeeping.

  • 22'

Mohammed Sissoko becomes the second Liverpool player to enter the referee's book. A yellow card for him for an awkward challenge.

  • 21'

Fantastic pressure from the Liverpool forwards forces Ronaldinho of all people to give it the heave-ho and clear the danger. Barca can't get going at the moment and it's down to Liverpool's harrying.

  • 19'

Marquez glances a header inches wide, but it wouldn't have counted anyway. It was a tight call and Liverpool were stretched from Deco's free-kick there.

  • 18'

Benitez is already out of his dugout and firing off instructions to his charges. He can't have too much to complain about so far, can he?

  • 15'

First yellow card of the night and it's gone to Arbeloa for a reckless challenge on Messi.

  • 13'

Update from Stamford Bridge and it's Chelsea 0-1 Porto. Quaresma got it and that puts the Portuguese champions ahead in the tie.

  • 12'

Carragher makes a heroic tackle on Deco who had left Xabi Alonso in his wake. It's the first time Barca have managed to get forward with any purpose.

  • 11'

Liverpool are playing on the front foot and dictating the play in these opening minutes, it's been a fine start for the Reds who have twice come close to scoring.

  • 10'

What an effort by Riise. A venomous, dipping, half-volley cracks the bar and gives Valdes an almighty fright.

  • 9'

Ronaldinho is being booed with every touch. Not sure why? Do they not appreciate wonderfully gifted footballers on Merseyside?

  • 7'

Reina in the Liverpool goal has been a spectator so far and will be pleased his involvement has been minimal.

  • 5'

Riise, whose goal separates the two sides, fires in a trademark left-foot low drive from the edge of the box and it whistles just wide. An early scare for Barca.

  • 4'

It's a lively and pacy start to the game. Liverpool if anything are looking the more dangerous side.

  • 3'

Liverpool press early on and Craig Bellamy nips in front of Lillian Thuram and tries to direct Steve Finnan's cross goalwards. Unfortunately for the Welshman his volley is easily gathered by Valdes.

  • 2'

Let me fill you in on the atmosphere at Anfield. It is enough to get the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Before the players came out we were treated to a raucus rendition of the Kop's favourite anthemn and every single Red in the stadium got involved, it's deafening.

  • 1'

Liverpool, of course, are in the commanding position of being 2-1 up with those two away goals. That in mind, they may have to settle with being without the ball with long periods of play. Barca set about keeping the ball immediately.

    We're underway at Anfield!

The teams are in and there are four changes for Barcelona with the most notable being Samuel Eto'o's return to the attack. Liverpool hand Alvaro Arbeloa his first start at Anfield. It's the same team that stunned the Spanish a fortnight ago and we're moments away from the return leg.

Welcome to this exciting clash of two European heavweights. We'll find out who will be knocked out and who will proceed to the quarter-finals. Liverpool are in the box seat after their superb win at the Nou Camp two weeks ago but Barca were the pre-tournament favourites and are the holders.
