(Arsenal anyone?) could be badly exposed. Bad luck Lyon but Milan go through to the semi-finals.
Milan, at the very death, have rescued their Champions League aspirations whilst seeing off a brave challenge from a Lyon side who just couldn't keep their concentration until the end. A typical goal-poachers finish from Inzaghi and a sharp piece of opportunism from Shevchenko have put pay to Gerard Houllier's men who perhaps deserved to just about shade it. Milan showed tonight though that their once rock-solid defence is by no means impervious and, if faced by a genuine attacking threat
Shevchenko, feeding off a poor error from Clerc whose passback is under-hit, rounds Coupet and, from an acute angle, hits it in to the now empty net. Clerc did not deserve that as he has played very well this evening.
The San Siro is suddenly very noisy once more. Lyon attack once again though but this time Cris, playing as a makeshift forward, is crowded out of play by Maldini as he approaches the Milan goal.
Carew is penalised for fouling Kaladze. Meanwhile, Maldini is booked for an earlier challenge.
Four minutes of extra time to be played.
Juninho hits a long free-kick in to the Milan box but it is straight at Dida.
Milan have scored. Inzaghi has saved the day for them. A long ball from the back is met by Shevchenko whose shot is well saved by Dida. It comes back off the post and Inzaghi, showing great predatory instincts, gleefully knocks the ball in to the net from four yards out. Surely Lyon are out now?
Malouda works tirelessly on the flank but there are no Lyon players waiting for it. Lyon are getting men back and want to hold on to their advantage rather than go for the killer goal.
Carew is blown up for having his feet high. If it wasn't for that he would have had a clear run on goal.
Maldini battles down the left flank and wins a throw. Kris clears with his head and Lyon get the ball up in to Milan's half.
Govou is coming off for Lyon and Reveillere is replacing him.
Maldini's ball in to the penalty area is booted away by Lyon. When it comes in again from the right Coupet once more takes the ball, in a somewhat theatrical manner.
Malouda goes on a marauding run but is stopped by a fine tackle in the area from Costacurta. Corner to Lyon. The ball flies over the other end of the pitch where Lyon now have a throw-in. Carew looks to make a nuisance of himself in the Milan defence but Dida's defenders shepherd it back to him.
Maldini plays it to Serginho who is looking very dangerous. His ball up to Inzaghi fools the Lyon defence but the striker is pulled up for offside.
Gattuso is off for Milan and Maldini is on.
Coupet comes out of his goal and claims a Milan free-kick well.
Serginho cuts inside and beats two Lyon defenders with a mazy run. Lyon clear for a corner. When it comes in, Inzaghi has a header cleared off the goal-line by Wiltord. A fantastic piece of defending by the ex-Arsenal man.
Carew has become the focal point for Lyon's attacks now and the Milan defenders will not fancy pitting themselves against the Norwegian collossus.
Diarra is needlessly fouled by Inzaghi on the edge of the Lyon penalty area. Diarra won't mind that.
And for Milan, Pirlo is coming off to be replaced by Massimo Ambrosini.
Fred is being replaced by John Carew.
Juninho wins the ball well in midfield but, just as he is sizing up a shot, it gets stuck under his feet.
Malouda and Goubet combine well but Goubet can't get his cross over towards Fred. Lyon have a corner. When it comes in Serginho looks very unsteady but Fred's final shot goes behind for a goal-kick.
Nice play from Milan in the middle of the park but when Serginho hits a very high ball in from the left Coupet does well to come and take the ball.
Milan keep pressing forward and Seedorf dinks it in to Kaka who is held off by the impressive Cris. Milan are eventually blown up for offside.
At the other end Costacurta takes a throw-in for Milan. When he receives it, Gattuso fails to keep control of the ball and Lyon have the goal-kick
From a Lyon corner Cacapa has a free header about fifteen yards out. It goes harmlessly out of play but where was the Milan marking?
Wiltord wins the ball well in midfield and now Clerc joins the play out on the right. When the ball eventually gets in to Milan's area, Fred cannot summon enough composure to get a shot in.
Throw-in to Milan deep in Lyon's half. Gattuso plays a good ball in to the area and a fine defensive header from Cris stops the ball reaching Inzaghi. The ball comes in again and Seedorf's shot is hit wide of Coupet's goal.
Govou hurdles a couple of challenges before playing a useful looking ball in to the Milan penalty area. Milan have enough players back to crowd Lyon out and clear the danger.
Serginho and Inzaghi show great understanding down the left before Cacapa closes in on Serginho and makes a good challenge. He is injured though and has gone off the pitch for treatment. From the corner, Coupet claims the ball easily.
Now Milan have a corner after a good tackle by Cris on Kaka. Coupet comes for it and Lyon manage to scramble it away.
Another free-kick for Lyon is hit in to the Milan penalty are by Juninho. The ball eventually reaches Abidal and his shot is saved by Dida and Lyon have a corner. Nothing comes of it though and Milan break out.
Shevchenko hits a cross cum shot thing which ends up being neither and goes harmlessly behind Coupet's goal.
The Brazilian takes the free-kick but a suspiciously close looking wall manage to deflect his effort away.
Juninho shows a lovely change of pace to move away from Pirlo. Pirlo comes back but fouls him and this is well within Juninho's range.
Seedorf and Serginho link well down the left flank before Serginho wastes the opening by hitting a cross high out of play.
Milan, or Pirlo to be precise, carelessly plays the ball out when he was under no pressure. His unforced error is symptomatic of the nervousness which is affecting Milan's performance tonight.
Pirlo takes the free-kick and a headed opportunity is prsented to Nesta again at the back of a group of players. His header is hit over the bar. He should have done better.
Milan kick off and immediately Inzaghi is fouled about thirty yards out from the Lyon goal.
Lyon are forty five minutes away from going where they have never gone before and so far they look the more composed of the two sides. Milan look nervous and unsure at the back and, the longer the scores stay the same, the more likely it is that gaps will appear in the Italian defence. Lyon have a great chance to finish Milan off in the second half.
A poor defensive header from Kaladze gives Lyon a corner. Malouda plays it short to Wiltord and Milan concede another corner. Milan win it back and a terrific ball from Kaka finds Pirlo before Clerc puts in a great tackle to block his path. Good defending.
Two minutes of added time to be played.
Inzaghi reacts very angrily to a challenge by Kris, who seemed to kick him. The Italian striker is booked but the Lyon defender was lucky to escape a yellow card there himself.
Inzaghi is pulled up for offside after some good play by Shevchenko. A close decision by the linesman.
Diarra gets back to tackle Shevchenko and concede a corner. Seedorf looks in no great hurry to take it and, when he finally does, Nesta wastes a chance by hitting a header high and wide.
Milan's defence is not looking solid at all this evening and Lyon must fancy their chances for another goal which, at this stage, looks like it could spell the end for Milan.
Juninho nearly scores a goal from an attempted cross which sends Dida scurrying back to deal with the danger. He concedes a corner and, with the Milan marking non-existent, Fred nearly atones for his error at the other end when his header clips the Milan woodwork.
Serginho attacks down the left and plays an inviting cross in to the Lyon penalty area which Inzaghi can't quite get his head to.
Kaladze plays it up to Shevchenko who is fouled by Clerc. Milan have a free-kick on the left hand side of the pitch which Seedorf hits far too deep and out of play.
Shevchenko slips slightly in the Lyon penalty area but Cacapa tackles him to concede a corner. Coupet does a bit of double fist action to get the ball away when it comes across his six yard line.
From another long Coupet goal-kick Govou receives the ball and has a go from about twenty five yards out. It's never going to trouble Dida but well worth an effort.
Pirlo tries a long ball over the Lyon defence which Cacapa gets a head to. From the knockdown Seedorf rather snaps at a shot which goes wide.
The Lyon fans are now making all the noise behind Coupet's goal.
Lyon take a free-kick in an almost identical position to the last one from which Juninho tried his luck. The same man sizes it up before hitting a high ball in to the Milan defence. Three Lyon players go for the ball before Diarra reacts well to head it over Dida after some terrible defending from Milan. Lyon are now in the driving seat.
Serginho shows some great skill to hold off a couple of Lyon challenges and when the ball goes in to the Lyon penalty area they can only head it out for another corner. Lyon clear the ball when it comes in from the corner.
Seedorf feeds Kaka who snakes through the Lyon defence but just can't find the room to get a shot in. Clerc just did enough to put him off but Milan now look like they have their tails up.
Fred gives the ball away to Schevchenko in the Lyon half and Inzaghi heads a great goal after a fine delivery in to the six yard box from Seedorf. Somewhat against the run of play but that was just what the doctor ordered for Milan. No extra-time or penalties now.
Jaap Stam has come off and Alessandro Costacurta(all thirty nine years and eleven months of him)replaces the Dutchman.
AC Milan's fans are already voicing their dis-approval. If Lyon make one of these chances count Milan could be in trouble tonight.
Juninho hits a fantastic free-kick from about thirty five yards out and Dida gets down well to make a great save and palm it away to safety.
Stam is down injured at the moment. Play has stopped whilst the Dutchman tries to walk it off.
A huge punt up the park from Coupet is not dealt with by Kaladze. Dida comes out to block the ball but it goes to Malouda who hits a lob which goes just over the bar. Lyon are looking the more dangerous of the two teams at the minute.
Nesta hits a harmless back pass to Dida but the ball bobbles and Dida makes a total hash of the clearance. The ball bounces to Wiltord who can't quite control it in time to make Milan pay. Milan eventually compose themselves and get out of danger but they were fortunate there.
Seedorf feeds Serginho down the left and he hits a great ball in to Inzaghi. He has a difficult chance with his back to the goal and the Lyon defence have him well covered as he hits it wide of the mark. A decent half-chance though.
Kaka's pass towards Shevchenko is well intercepted by Cris. If he missed that Lyon were in trouble.
Serginho makes a poor defensive header and the ball reaches Govou whose long-range effort is as wide of the goal as it is ambitious. Which is to say very.
Milan have a corner after Clerc put the ball out of play. Seedorf takes it but it goes straight to Coupet.
Gattuso got elbowed by Fred. It looked accidental but it also looked rather painful.
Seedorf goes on a bit of a run towards goal and then hits a square ball to Pirlo on the eighteeen yard line. His shot is well wide though and he probably had more time than he thought.
Wiltord heads towards goal and his shot is deflected behind for a corner. Malouda takes it but Serginho gets his head to the ball before a Lyon player can get to it.
Govou on the right wing plays a decent ball in to the Milan area but Nesta deals with the ball and heads it away.
Kaka fouled about forty yards from the Lyon goal. Pirlo tries to hit a ball from the free-kick for Shevchenko to attack with his head but it is over-hit and goes behind.
Brazilian Fred fails to control the ball at the other end and allows the it to go behind for a Milan goal-kick.
Kaka charges out of defence with the ball and hits it up towards Inzaghi. The striker is barged off the ball by the Lyon defence but the referee waves for a Lyon goal-kick as the ball goes out of play.
Lyon are knocing the ball about with care and caution. They seem in no hurry to speed things up and are just looking to keep composed and settled in these early stages.
Seedorf tries to thread the ball through to Shevchenko but Lyon take the ball off him and play it away to safety.
Only Kaka in the Milan team is without a Champions League winners medal. Lyon will be aiming to keep it that way.
Milan are on the attack but Cacapa holds off Shevchenko to let the ball drift out of play.
Lyon kick off in white shirts and red shorts, Milan in their traditional red and black stripes.
The stadium is lit up by the red glow of dozens of flares and the the Rossoneri are sure to receive fanatical backing from the home crowd this evening.
There are 10,000 Lyon fans here tonight and they are contributing to a fantastic atmosphere in a packed San Siro stadium. They know that, following the goalless first leg, if their team can sneak a valuable away goal then they have a great chance of causing an upset.
Lyon are bidding to reach the last four of the Champions League for the first time whereas AC Milan find themselves in more familiar surroundings as they chase a third Champions League Final appearance in four seasons. Join us for kick-off at 19.45.
For Lyon, their inspirational free-kick expert Juninho is back after missing the first leg in France through suspension. Up front, Brazilian Fred replaces Norwegian giant John Carew whilst at the other end Gregory Coupet will have to be at his best to keep the home side's strikers at bay.
Milan will be shaken by a defeat to lowly Lecce in Serie A on saturday but they will welcome back their big guns for tonight's all important tie. Kaka, Shevchenko and Inzaghi all return after being rested for the league match at the weekend.
Now it gets interesting. With a place in the final now tantalisingly within sight, both these teams will be hoping for big performances from their big players on a night when one team will be eliminated.
