The visitors withstood most of what Real could throw at them and now have the second leg to turn it around in Turin.
Juve were outplayed for the majority of the match but the Italians won't be that disappointed with a 1-0 defeat.
There could be one last attack for Juve...no...the final whistle blows and it's all over.
It's goalkeeper tennis until Zambrotta takes a tumble under a challenge from Raul Bravo.
Casillas launches the ball down the pitch to Buffon, who kicks it straight back up the other end.
Juve win a corner as Carlos makes a last ditch challenge. Emerson heads over the bar.
Zidane gets kicked in the stomach and Beckham rides a studs-up challenge as time ticks away.
Things look bleak for Juve now as Ibrahimovic, their only spark in attack, is looking tired and heavy legged.
Ibrahimovic has been inspired by Zidane but his own attempts at trickery end in failure as he ties himself in knots.
Owen rides Zambrotta's challenge and wins a corner for Real Madrid. Zidane pulls off a cheeky back-heel flick and wins a freekick near the corner flag.
...the Swedish striker holds off Helguera and fires a shot straight at Casillas - a great chance for the equalizer.
Zalayeta comes on for Del Piero and has an immediate effect by playing a through-ball for Ibrahimovic....
Zambrotta makes an excellent tackle on Raul. The ref blows for a foul then books Zambrotta as the player tells him what he thinks of the decision. I'm with Zambrotta.
Del Piero grabs a handful of Figo's shirt and gets booked by our card-happy referee.
Samuel produces a thumping header that hits the inside of the post and somehow bounces out of, instead of into, the goal.
Real make a change. Ronaldo goes off to a mixture of cheers and whistles as Owen comes on.
Figo skips past Taccinardi, Beckham chips the ball in to Zidane, who can't bring it down in the area. Goalkick.
Del Piero whips in a cross for Camoranesi but Samuel heads behind for corner - which Juve waste.
Camoranesi provides a decent delivery and Emerson should have done better with his effort on goal.
Samuel gets booked for a late tackle on Ibrahimovic and Juve win a freekick in a dangerous position.
Real have two quick claims for a penalty. One a handball and one a shirt tug.
Samuel blocks Del Piero's strike, the shot was so hard that the ball has popped and needs to be replaced.
Ibrahimovic wins a foul off Samuel. Emerson finds Ibrahimovic and his cross is scrambled away.
Juve make a change. Tacchinardi replaces the yellow carded Blasi.
Zidane weaves his magic to draw 'oos' and 'aaas' from the crowd. But Juve aren't spellbound and break up the Real attack.
Blasi gets booked for a foul on Raul and that will rule him out of the return leg.
Zambrotta probes the left flank and delivers a lofted cross that Emerson heads into Casillas' open arms.
Zidane gets on with the game and cuts the ball back across the box. No Real player was quick enough to keep up with him and Cannavaro clears the danger.
Gravesen is in the face of another Juve player and needs to calm down if he wants to stay on the pitch. Meanwhile Samuel is down injured.
Del Piero delivers a great ball from the freekick but Helguera stoops to head the ball clear.
Camoranesi wins a foul from Gravesen then some shoving ensues. Olivera and Gravesen both get booked.
Figo takes a dive and rugby tackles Zambrotta as he looks for freekick. He gets up expecting the decision and is frustrated to see it go the other way - and rightly so.
Real skirt the edge of the box. Zidane makes space for a shot and Buffon is called into action once again. Figo puts the rebound over the bar.
Ronaldo, who has been very quiet, finds some space to sprint at the defence, turn and then fire off a low shot that Buffon palms past the post.
Camoranesi forces Carlos back with an attacking run, the Real defender stretches to make the tackle and gets up holding his groin.
Millions of pounds worth of talent queue up to take it. Beckham eventually strikes the freekick into the wall.
Roberto Carlos gallops down the flank (I don't think he has been in his own half this match) and finds Figo, who is fouled on the edge of the box.
Thuram races out from the back and finds Del Piero with an incisve through-ball. The Italian striker dwells on the ball and Gravesen gets back to make an important tackle.
All Real's flicks and tricks are coming off for them at the moment...until Zidane is fouled and the play stops for a freekick.
Zidane finds Carlos with a deft flick, the Brazilian defender whips in wicked cross that Buffon punches clear.
Zidane chases down Thuram and wins possession for Real - the great man showing he is not just an attacking talent.
Real get the second-half underway. The home fans will want more of the same.
The ref blows for half-time! Real have been on the attack since the off and deserve to be leading 1-0. Emerson and Del Piero have been awful for the visitors, who have also lost Nedved.
Olivera stands on Raul's heel. The striker writhes around on the floor but Olivera escapes a yellow card.
Blasi and Olivera push Figo off the ball. That was a top quality shove.
I think Buffon must have had more time in possession than any other player on the pitch.
In the other other games Arsenal are losing 1-0 in Munich and Liverpool are winning 2-0 at home to Levekusen.
Beckham has the chance to deliver another quality freekick. He opts for the short pass and Juve's defence rushes out to smother the attack.
Gravesen gets forward from his holding position and hoists the ball into the box. Buffon tips the ball away from Raul's head and collects at the second attempt.
Nedved can't continue so on comes Olivera - who was on loan at Atletico Madrid last season.
Ibrahimovic is the only danger man for Juve so far, Del Piero has been anonymous.
Casillas kicks the ball out so Nedved can get treatment for a head injury. The crowd don't like his sporting gesture.
Juve lost the lead in Serie A this weekend and now they are a goal down in Europe. It's a testing time for the Old Lady.
The Englishman whips in a trademark cross and Helguera nods the ball past Buffon and into the far corner of the net. GOAL!!!
Zidane dives to win a freekick and Beckham has the chance to deliver a quality cross from the left...
Emerson shifts the ball from right to left foot and then fires a dipping shot over the bar - or did Casillas tip it over?
Buffon may be the most expensive keeper in the game but he is certainly earning his money today.
Beckham flicks the ball through to Raul. Buffon saves the striker's shot but the flag was up for offside in any case.
Blasi nutmegs Gravesen. Nedved's return ball goes astray and the pressure is back on Juve.
Buffon is being kept very busy and once again he rushes off his line to snuff out another of Real's relentless attacks.
Carlos sprints down the left flank and pulls the ball back for Raul, who smashes his shot against the bar.
Apart from Casillas the entire Real team are inside the Juve half looking for the first goal.
Zidane works hard on the left flank and eventually manufactures enough space for a cross. Buffon collects the ball at his near post.
Thuram makes a great, firm tackle on Raul but the ref disagrees and shows Thuram a yellow card. It wasn't even a foul.
It still 0-0 but these two sides have never drawn a match against each other so a goal should not be far away.
Zambrotta breaks but ignores Camoranesi in acres of space on the right and the move breaks down.
Cannavaro loses the ball deep in his own half, fortunately for the defender Beckham cannot keep it in play.
Emerson is a liability for Juve.
Ibrahimovic shows his skill on the deck and draws a routine save from Casillas with a speculative curling shot.
Juve are playing as expected; sitting back, soaking up the pressure and hitting Real on the break. A tactic that has given them five 1-0 wins in Europe this season.
Juve make a rare forward foray. Once again Emerson's final pass is a poor one and Ibrahimovic lets him know about it.
Bravo, on for the injured Salgado, moves forward down the right. Gravesen needlessly fouls Blasi in the centre of the pitch.
Whistles burst from the stands as Juve enjoy a spell of possession. Zidane breaks it up and slips the ball through to Ronaldo...the flag is up for offside.
Emerson's through-ball bounces off the heels of Ibrahimovic and Real break. Ronaldo sprints towards the box but Buffon races off his line and collects the ball at the Brazilian's feet.
Zidane and Figo open up Juve. Carlos crosses for Raul, who fires over the bar from the edge of the box.
Ronaldo whips in a cross from the left but Thuram stretches to cut it out at the near post. Helguera makes a last ditch tackle on Ibrahimovic to stop a Juve break.
Slagado is in real trouble and signals to the bench that he needs to come off - not a good start for Real.
Del Piero skins Salgado, who is still limping, and Juve win a freekick - virtually a corner. Helguera heads clear.
Salgado clashes knees with Nedved and has to leave the pitch for treatment. The solid defender limps back on.
Helguera gets an early taste of the battle he will face against Ibrahimovic in the air. The ref gives the defender a foul.
Blasi knocks Zidane off the ball for the first freekick of the game. Emerson is seeing a lot of the ball for Juve but his final ball has been poor so far.
Juve get the game underway, kicking from right to left in their all blue kit. Real are all in white.
