Caen began their Coupe de la Ligue campaign with a 1-0 victory away to Ligue 2 side Lorient. Caen had seen their impressive start to the season checked when they lost 2-0 to champions Monaco at the weekend, but they returned to winning ways when Cristian Kouakou kept his cool to slot home shortly before half-time. Montpellier continued their positive recent form with a 2-0 win over Guingamp. Montpellier went into the game on the back of a five-match unbeaten run and goals in each half from Souleymane Camara and Casimir Ninga secured the victory.
