How to bet using the Asian handicap

The Asian handicap really is the simplest form of betting in the world once you get the hang of it - as long as you don't get frightened by the use of half points or the word handicap.

If you can imagine a normal game of football having a win, lose and draw. Well, take away the draw and surely the whole process is so much more simple.

There is a little bit more to it than that, though. If the odds offer a ¼ margin the draw will give you your stake back, or half the winning bet. On a ¾ margin, then there is a chance to get half your stake back if the opposing side wins by a goal. If the odds are a ½ different then it's a simple win and lose bet.

And perhaps confusingly, but it rarely happens, if a margin of 1 or 2 or even 3 is used then your money will be returned for a drawn match.

It's probably best to work with an example. Let's take Manchester United v Arsenal.

Eg. Arsenal are given ¼ goal advantage: This would be written Manchester United v Arsenal (0:1/4). Manchester United are offered at 2.50 to win and Arsenal are priced at 2.00 to win.

If you put £10 to win on Arsenal. Here are the possible returns:

  • Draw 0-0: £10.00 (50 per cent of winning bet)
  • Arsenal 1-0: £20.00
  • Manchester United 1-0: NIL
  • Arsenal 2-0: £20.00
  • Arsenal 2-1: £20.00
  • Arsenal 3-1: £20.00

Eg. Arsenal given ½ goal advantage: This would be written Manchester United v Arsenal (0:1/2). Manchester United are offered at 2.50 to win and Arsenal are priced at 2.00 to win.

If you put £10 to win on Arsenal. Here are some possible returns:

  • Draw 0-0: £20.00
  • Arsenal 1-0: £20.00
  • Manchester United 1-0: NIL
  • Arsenal 2-0: £20.00
  • Manchester United 2-1: NIL
  • Arsenal 2-1: £20.00

Eg. Arsenal given 3/4 goal advantage: This would be written Manchester United v Arsenal (0:3/4). Manchester United are offered at 2.50 to win and Arsenal are priced at 2.00 to win.

If you put £10 to win on Arsenal. Here are the possible returns:

  • Draw 0-0: £20.00
  • Arsenal 1-0: £20.00
  • Manchester United 1-0: £5.00 (50 per cent of stake returned)
  • Arsenal 2-0: £20.00
  • Manchester United 2-1: £5.00 (50 per cent of stake returned)
  • Arsenal 2-1: £20.00

The simple rule is - if you bet on the team with a handicap then a draw will get a return. If you back the team without a handicap, then you must get a win to see a return.

    The advantages are simple:

  • If you fancy a team to win there are better odds available.
  • If you think a team might draw or win then the handicap works in your favour.
  • A simple win or draw enhances the chances of winning.
  • Very profitable for accumulator bets.
  • A close call can mean getting half your money back.
