WARSAW, Poland -- Poland's sports minister says her government has asked Russia to choose a new European Championship base for its national team to avoid possible anti-Russian protests.
The Russian team is booked to stay in Warsaw's prestigious Bristol hotel, which is next to the venue of monthly ceremonies led by nationalist opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski to mark the death of his twin brother, President Lech Kaczynski, in a 2010 plane crash in Russia.
The ceremonies at the presidential palace gather crowds who believe that Russia caused the crash. Many reject an official report citing fog and pilot error.
Minister Joanna Mucha said Wednesday the Russian team has been warned this may be a "difficult situation."
A memorial ceremony is planned for June 10, two days after the tournament's start.
