Roman Shirokov

Shirokov was a late call-up to the Russia squad for their Euro 2008 adventure, but he heads into this major tournament as a fixture in the national team ranks after playing in eight Euro 2012 qualifiers and scoring in the decisive Group B win against Ireland in Dublin that paved the way to their progress to the finals.

Shirokov took time to fulfil his potential and it was only after he moved to Zenit that he shot to prominence, as he starred in their 2008 UEFA Cup win in an unfamiliar role as a centre-back. That versatility is a useful quality for Russia boss Dick Advocaat to have at Euro 2012, but he is more likely to employ this reliable performer in a deep lying midfield role.

His last experience of a European Championships was hardly encouraging as he fluffed his lines in his centre-back role against Spain that was lost 4-1 and was not picked again for the rest of the tournament.
