Niko Kranjcar

Tottenham snapped up Niko Kranjcar from Portsmouth on September 1, 2009, after fellow Croatian Luka Modric suffered a broken leg in Spurs' final match before the summer transfer window slammed shut.

The Zagreb-born attacking midfielder originally signed for Portsmouth from Hajduk Split on transfer deadline day in August 2006 for a fee of around £3.5 million. Prior to playing for Hajduk Split, Kranjcar plied his trade at their fiercest rivals Dinamo Zagreb, whom he left on sour terms following a disagreement. He won the Croatian title at both clubs.

Kranjcar has represented the Croatian national team right through the youth squads and Under-21s before securing a place in the full squad after Croatia's disappointing Euro 2004 campaign. As the national team was then managed by his father, Croatian footballing legend Zlatko Kranjcar, he initially faced accusations of nepotism, but his performances soon won the fans round and he cemented himself as the natural leader of the side on the pitch. He went to represent Croatia in the 2006 World Cup and at Euro 2008.

Hailed as the next Robert Prosinecki, the Croatia international enjoyed a productive first full season at Portsmouth and a string of impressive performances in his second brought him an FA Cup winners' medal.

However, with Pompey struggling financially, Kranjcar was reunited with former Pompey boss Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane for an undisclosed fee, reportedly in the region of £2.5 million, considered a bargain price.

But, with the impressive emergence of Gareth Bale on the left flank, Kranjcar managed just 19 league starts in his first year and was used sparingly again the next, sparking summer speculation over his future.

Strengths: He boasts a deceptively quick turn of pace, the skill to beat a man, an ability to cross and a decent shot.

Weaknesses: Despite his height, Kranjcar is perhaps guilty of being light-weight when in possession. He could be criticised for lacking aggression.

Career high: Claiming FA Cup glory with Portsmouth in 2008.

Career low: Arguably the 2010-11 season that saw him restricted to so little action at Tottenham.

Style: Technical, clever, tricky, a midfielder with an eye for goal.

Quotes: "He is a top player. He practices, he spends time in training every day. On a daily basis, he is on the training ground an hour after practice finishes. His father was a top player. He practises, so it is not by chance that his technique is great." Harry Redknapp.

Trivia: Kranjcar became the youngest captain of Dinamo Zagreb at the age of 17.
