Georgios Samaras

Much-maligned during his time at Manchester City, target man Samaras endured a similarly difficult period when he first moved to Celtic in 2008. Accused of being lazy and lacking the enthusiasm to shine at the highest level, it seemed as if he was destined to be a failure in British football.

The player has turned the jeers into cheers in Glasgow, as his improved performances helped Celtic end their wait to return to title winning form this season. Hardly prolific in front of goal in the Scottish Premier League, his link-up play was a key ingredient in the success enjoyed by Neil Lennon’s side.

A full Greece international since he made his debut against Belarus in February 2006, he could have opted to play for Australia as his father hailed from Melbourne. However, there was never any doubt that Samaras would opt to play for the country of his birth and he performed well at the 2010 World Cup finals.

After playing in eight Euro 2012 qualifiers, scoring one goal, this towering hit-man heads to a summer of football in Poland and Ukraine as a vital component of the Greece attacking game plan.
